Book Synopsis Geometric Design Tolerancing: Theories, Standards and Applications by : Hoda A. ElMaraghy
Download or read book Geometric Design Tolerancing: Theories, Standards and Applications written by Hoda A. ElMaraghy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of proper geometric dimensioning and tolerancing as a means of expressing the designer's functional intent and controlling the inevitable geometric and dimensional variations of mechanical parts and assemblies, is becoming well recognized. The research efforts and innovations in the field of tolerancing design, the development of supporting tools, techniques and algorithms, and the significant advances in computing software and hardware all have contributed to its recognition as a viable area of serious scholarly contributions. The field of tolerancing design is successfully making the transition to maturity where deeper insights and sound theories are being developed to offer explanations, and reliable implementations are introduced to provide solutions. Machine designers realized very early that manufacturing processes do not produce the nominal dimensions of designed parts. The notion of associating a lower and an upper limit, referred to as tolerances, with each dimen sion was introduced. Tolerances were specified to ensure the proper function of mating features. Fits of mating features included clearances, location fits, and interference fits, with various sub-grades in each category assigned a tolerance value depending on the nominal size of the mating features. During the inspection process, a part is rejected if a dimension fell outside the specified range. As the accuracy requirements in assemblies became tighter, designers had to consider other critical dimensions and allocate tolerances to them in order to ensure the assembly's functionality.

Book Synopsis The Grothendieck Theory of Dessins D'Enfants by : Leila Schneps
Download or read book The Grothendieck Theory of Dessins D'Enfants written by Leila Schneps and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dessins d'Enfants are combinatorial objects, namely drawings with vertices and edges on topological surfaces. Their interest lies in their relation with the set of algebraic curves defined over the closure of the rationals, and the corresponding action of the absolute Galois group on them. The study of this group via such realted combinatorial methods as its action on the Dessins and on certain fundamental groups of moduli spaces was initiated by Alexander Grothendieck in his unpublished Esquisse d'un Programme, and developed by many of the mathematicians who have contributed to this volume. The various articles here unite all of the basics of the subject as well as the most recent advances. Researchers in number theory, algebraic geometry or related areas of group theory will find much of interest in this book.
Book Synopsis Illustrated Dictionary of Mechanical Engineering by :
Download or read book Illustrated Dictionary of Mechanical Engineering written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Dictionary is designed for people who have just started studying mechanical engineering terms in a foreign language, particularly for those who have little or no knowledge of either the terms or their meaning. The latter category of readers may find it useful, in addition to the translation of the term, to have an explanation of its meaning as well. In the Dictionary, such explanation is provided by means of internationally accepted symbols, formulas, charts, diagrams, plans and drawings. In this way, illustrations serve as a universal intermediary between languages. As a rule, the illustration for a term consists of that graphic representation which is most frequently used in explaining the term concerned in instructional and technical literature (conventional graphic representation of the term). Apart from being informative, the illustrations also help remember the terms themselves. In the Dictionary, therefore, illustrations are provided even for those terms whose meaning would be understood without the aid of graphic symbols. At the same time, the author had to leave out many terms - even important ones - which do not lend themselves to illustration. The terms are grouped according to subject. This makes it possible to study the terminology pertaining to the subjects which interest the user most. This should also help speed up the assimilation of the terms, since the student will be able to remember a group of terms pertaining to a common subject. When translating texts from one language into another, one is helped by the alphabetical indexes given at the end of the Dictionary.

Book Synopsis Theoretical Perspectives on Terminology by : Pamela Faber
Download or read book Theoretical Perspectives on Terminology written by Pamela Faber and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to provide an overview of different theoretical perspectives on Terminology, from Wüster to other initiatives that have emerged since the beginning of the 1990s. The volume also covers important topics which have significantly influenced Terminology and its evolution. These include variation, multidimensionality, conceptual relations, and equivalence, among others. The twenty-two chapters of the volume, all written by acknowledged experts in the field, explore the questions that different approaches seek to answer. They also describe the theoretical and methodological principles that were devised over the years to characterize, analyze, and represent terminological data. The semi-chronological, semi-thematic organization of chapters not only provides readers with a clear vision of the evolution of ideas in Terminology, but also gives them an understanding as to why some of these ideas were initially challenged. In addition to being accessible to readers unfamiliar with the basic theoretical principles in the field, the chapters provide a showcase of current research in the field, the challenges looming on the horizon, and finally future directions in terminological research. By bringing together work that is often disseminated in different forums and written in different languages, this volume provides a unique opportunity to look at how different theoretical approaches to Terminology offer complementary perspectives on terms, concepts and specialized knowledge, and help to further a better understanding of the complex phenomena that terminologists must successfully deal with in their work.

This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the past, present, and future of studies on medieval technology, art, and craft practices. Inspired by Villard’s enigmatic portfolio of artistic and engineering drawings, this collection explores the multiple facets of medieval building represented in this manuscript (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS Fr 19093). The book’s eighteen essays and two introductions showcase traditional and emergent methods for the study of medieval craft, demonstrating how these diverse approaches collectively amplify our understanding about how medieval people built, engineered, and represented their world. Contributions range from the analysis of words and images in Villard’s portfolio, to the close analysis of masonry, technological marvels, and gothic architecture, pointing the way toward new avenues for future scholarship to explore.
