Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we lead sane lives in a world gone mad? How do we create a sane world when we are sick ourselves? Dr. Mangold interweaves politics, medicine, and psychology in a real-life account of how he was broken by forces fueled by fear and lies. This heart-felt and transparent account takes us on a personal journey into a world that is flying upside and on the verge of crashing soon. This true story recounts the struggles Dr. Mangold faced not only from an uncaring and unforgiving government but also from a wife whose own psycho-pathologies prevented her from performing the two tasks he needed so desperately during those struggles: love and support. It is more than an account of persecution and victimization. It is a story of falling and discovering that the rescue rope had been severed by those entrusted to throw it in the first place.

Book excerpt: This is the true story of an American physician's tragic Thanksgiving in Managua, Nicaragua searching for his son Benjamin who was abducted by the U.S. embassy in Nicaragua. Dr. Mangold endured multiple assaults and robberies during his search and eventually ended up in an Immigration detention center while the embassy flew in his ex-wife to pick up Ben. Michael Mangold M.D. and Ben were pawns in a cosmic chess game between U.S. government officials and Mike's Nemesis. All he had was a handful of Cordobas and the truth against an unlimited amount of money and power. It is the ""Story of Job"" without an overcompensating God, and ""The Odyssey"" without the love and support of an awaiting Penelope. It is a true tale of good and evil and how the evil that people do has consequences for eternity."

Download or read book Travel as a Political Act written by Rick Steves and published by Rick Steves. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change the world one trip at a time. In this illuminating collection of stories and lessons from the road, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves shares a powerful message that resonates now more than ever. With the world facing divisive and often frightening events, from Trump, Brexit, and Erdogan, to climate change, nativism, and populism, there's never been a more important time to travel. Rick believes the risks of travel are widely exaggerated, and that fear is for people who don't get out much. After years of living out of a suitcase, he still marvels at how different cultures find different truths to be self-evident. By sharing his experiences from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East, Rick shows how we can learn more about own country by viewing it from afar. With gripping stories from Rick's decades of exploration, this fully revised edition of Travel as a Political Act is an antidote to the current climate of xenophobia. When we travel thoughtfully, we bring back the most beautiful souvenir of all: a broader perspective on the world that we all call home. All royalties from the sale of Travel as a Political Act are donated to support the work of Bread for the World, a non-partisan organization working to end hunger at home and abroad.

Download or read book The Realities of Images written by Gerald Michael Greenfield and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2001 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Feb. 1877, a letter from the county council of Telha, a town of 600 people located in the Serra da Mattos in Brazil reported that people were dying from starvation. The previous year's rainy season had been sparse, and the harvest, poor. Now, this season's rains still had not appeared. This was the Great Drought -- three years of failed rains enshrined in Brazilian memory as the worst drought ever to hit Brazil's northeast. Drought had visited the region throughout its history, with the earliest recorded occurrences dating back to the 16th century. The failure of rains in 1877 was devastating, for it caught the provinces of the north totally unprepared. The specter of periodic droughts producing dislocation and death continues to haunt the region.

Book excerpt: Some wise person once said, "If you know one child with autism, you know one child with autism." In Embracing Mrs. Mommy, Living with, Learning from and Loving Someone with Autism, Rocky Bowers Parra provides snapshots of daily life with Matthew, her youngest child. Diagnosed on the autism spectrum at three years old, Matthew positively impacts Rocky and her family in ways they never imagined. Rocky and her family began advocating for autism acceptance and awareness soon after his diagnosis. Five years ago she began to write about their experiences as a way to promote awareness. It grew into something more. By sharing their experience, Rocky hopes to help other families and individuals impacted by autism find the good in their situations, celebrate their successes (big or small) and most importantly, feel the love of someone who has walked before them. Special needs parenting and family life can sometimes feel lonely and isolated, this book will let families know they are not alone. The road is bumpy and not without the occasional detour, but there is a way forward, you just have to follow the path and embrace it.
