Book Synopsis Relational Designs in Literature and the Arts by :
Download or read book Relational Designs in Literature and the Arts written by and published by Brill. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection focuses on texts that address the other arts – from painting to photography, from the stage to the screen, and from avant-garde experiments to mass culture. Despite their diversity of object and approach, the essays in Relational Designs coalesce around the argument that representations are defined by relations and dynamics, rather than intrinsic features. This rationale is supported by the discourses and methodologies favoured by the book’s contributors: their approaches offer a cross section of the intellectual and critical environment of our time. The book illustrates the critical possibilities that derive from the broad range of modes of inquiry - poststructuralist criticism, gender studies, postcolonial studies, new historicism – that the book’s four sections bring to bear on a wealth of intermedial practices. But Relational Designs compounds such critical emphases with the voice of the practitioner: the book is rounded off by an interview in which a contemporary novelist discusses her attraction to the other arts in terms that extend the book’s insights and bridge the gap between academic discourse and artistic practice.

Book excerpt: The board and chess pieces in this book generally comply with the standards of the current World Chess Federation FIDE handbook/standards of approved design of chess pieces for tournament play. Section (1) PREPARATION provides an overview of the requirements and dimensions necessary to plan and gather material for this project. Section (2) CHESSMEN PIECES is about woodturning and carving the individual chess pieces. It includes the use of a duplicator attached to a wood lathe and designing templates for each chess piece. Power carving and crafted jigs are used to complete the necessary characteristics of each piece including adding weight and applying Baize. Section (3) STORAGE TRAYS includes the detail necessary to construct a compartmental drawer necessary to store all of the chess pieces together when not being played on the Chess Board as well as adding a felt like liner for the individual compartments of the tray. Section (4) CASE is about designing a container for the Trays while serving as a platform for the Chess Board. It includes metal working information necessary for crafting a release mechanism for both Trays. Section (5) CHESS BOARD contains detailed information about crafting the actual playing surface of 64 squares for the game of chess and adding a decorative inlay around the perimeter. Information is added for removal of the Chess Board for adjustments. Section (6) COMPLETION TASKS is about selecting and applying a finish for the Case and Chess Board. It includes measurements and placement of hardware components necessary for making every part work together as a storage unit and playing surface. Tray stop brackets are added for safety measures as well as instructions for assembly. Section (7) APPENDIX contains 18 Drawings of the chess set components, chess pieces and jigs used in the completion of this set. A Glossary of Terms have been added to help in the further understanding of woodworking phrasing and tool names that may not be familiar to an interested reader. A US to Metric Conversion Table for regions using that measurement system should assist in understanding dimensions used for this set. The planning and knowledge of standard methods can eliminate hours of trial and error. A summary of all the materials and hardware needed to craft one set is included.

Book Synopsis A Companion of Feminisms for Digital Design and Spherology by : Amanda Windle
Download or read book A Companion of Feminisms for Digital Design and Spherology written by Amanda Windle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book questions if spherology is a philosophy for designers, giving guidance on ways to read Spheres, how to approach the trilogy’s indexicality, and apply the key tropes and ethics of atmospheres to digital design. Each chapter includes a design-in, that is a practical entry point into the many tropes of Spheres including— bubbles, globes and foam. The book also applies spherology to an atmosphere design issue involving endangered species and geospatial threats to the environment. Spherology refers to the Spheres trilogy by the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk, which traces spherical ideas, theories, sensations and feelings related to the philosophical concept of ‘being’ and the human-centered position of ‘being-in’. It is the first cynical, feminist companion of spherology to take a practice-led approach and to cover all three controversial volumes to with and against Spheres. Windle draws on feminist science and technology studies (STS) through parody within reading, writing and design practices. Design provides navigation so that academics and students can engage with spherology through an embodied concern with digital materiality. As a feminist companion for today’s design issues, the book is an essential read for feminist STS scholars, design practitioners and digital R&D specialists working both in industry and academia, including more specifically data visualisers, interface and interaction designers.
Book Synopsis The Lewis Chessmen by : James Robinson
Download or read book The Lewis Chessmen written by James Robinson and published by British Museum Publications Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lewis chessmen were found hidden on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, in the early nineteenth century. Probably made in Norway around AD 1150-1200, they consist of elaborately worked walrus ivory in the forms of seated kings and queens, mitred bishops, knights on their mounts, standing warders and pawns. This book takes a look at the many theories surrounding the ownership of the pieces, why they were hidden and how exactly they were discovered, and places them in the wider context of the ancient game of chess and secular culture of the Middle Ages.

The team consists of two Detective Inspectors. Mike Karetzi is young, unorthodox and a maverick, whereas Evan Jones is pedantic, works by the book and is nearing retiring age. Book Synopsis Ivory Vikings by : Nancy Marie Brown
Download or read book Ivory Vikings written by Nancy Marie Brown and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1800's, on a Hebridean beach in Scotland, the sea exposed an ancient treasure cache: 93 chessmen carved from walrus ivory. Norse netsuke, each face individual, each full of quirks, the Lewis Chessmen are probably the most famous chess pieces in the world. Harry played Wizard's Chess with them in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Housed at the British Museum, they are among its most visited and beloved objects. Questions abounded: Who carved them? Where? Nancy Marie Brown's Ivory Vikings explores these mysteries by connecting medieval Icelandic sagas with modern archaeology, art history, forensics, and the history of board games. In the process, Ivory Vikings presents a vivid history of the 400 years when the Vikings ruled the North Atlantic, and the sea-road connected countries and islands we think of as far apart and culturally distinct: Norway and Scotland, Ireland and Iceland, and Greenland and North America. The story of the Lewis chessmen explains the economic lure behind the Viking voyages to the west in the 800s and 900s. And finally, it brings from the shadows an extraordinarily talented woman artist of the twelfth century: Margret the Adroit of Iceland.

Download or read book Chess Design Hb written by MORANDI and published by Norma Editions. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - A real mirror of 20th century creation, Chess Design presents an exceptional documentation on chess games made by artists, designers, architects, and craftsmen - Published to accompany an exhibition at the A. Guillemain & R. Morandi Gallery in Paris, in November 2022 A real mirror of 20th century creation, Chess Design presents an exceptional documentation on chess games made by artists, designers, architects, and craftsmen: chessboards themselves, but also artist's drawings, execution plans and photographs of archives. By presenting nearly 300 of these chessboards chronologically, the author offers a new perspective on the history of art and its evolution. Art Nouveau, Secession, Surrealism, Fluxus, Pop Art, most of the great movements that are born and follow one another in the Fine Arts find an echo with these chessboards and the 16 pieces that animate them. These chess games also reflect the evolution of techniques and materials used during this period: wood, glass, ceramics will give way, from the 1950s, to steel, plastic and composite materials. At the border between the plastic arts and the decorative arts, these chessboards are made by big names in the art scene, design or architecture - Alexandre Rodtchenko, Jean-Michel Frank, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, or, more recently, Yoko Ono, Robert Filliou, Yayo Kusama, Victor Vasarely, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry or Damian Hirst - as by anonymous people. The synthesis offered by the author constitutes a valuable and innovative historian's work, supported by iconography that is both rich and mostly unpublished.
