Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of wireless communications is changing very rapidly since a few years. The introduction of digital data communication in combination with digital signal process ing has created the foundation for the development of many new wireless applications. High-quality digital wireless networks for voice communication with global and local coverage, like the GSM and DECT system, are only faint and early examples of the wide variety of wireless applications that will become available in the remainder of this decade. The new evolutions in wireless communications set new requirements for the trans ceivers (transmitter-receivers). Higher operating frequencies, a lower power consump tion and a very high degree of integration, are new specifications which ask for design approaches quite different from the classical RF design techniques. The integrata bility and power consumption reduction of the digital part will further improve with the continued downscaling of technologies. This is however completely different for the analog transceiver front-end, the part which performs the interfacing between the antenna and the digital signal processing. The analog front-end's integratability and power consumption are closely related to the physical limitations of the transceiver topology and not so much to the scaling of the used technology. Chapter 2 gives a detailed study of the level of integration in current transceiver realization and analyzes their limitations. In chapter 3 of this book the complex signal technique for the analysis and synthesis of multi-path receiver and transmitter topologies is introduced.

Book excerpt: Design and Modeling of Millimeter-wave CMOS Circuits for Wireless Transceivers describes in detail some of the interesting developments in CMOS millimetre-wave circuit design. This includes the re-emergence of the slow-wave technique used on passive devices, the license-free 60GHz band circuit blocks and a 76GHz voltage-controlled oscillator suitable for vehicular radar applications. All circuit solutions described are suitable for digital CMOS technology. Digital CMOS technology developments driven by Moore’s law make it an inevitable solution for low cost and high volume products in the marketplace. Explosion of the consumer wireless applications further makes this subject a hot topic of the day. The book begins with a brief history of millimetre-wave research and how the silicon transistor is born. Originally meant for different purposes, the two technologies converged and found its way into advanced chip designs. The second part of the book describes the most important passive devices used in millimetre-wave CMOS circuits. Part three uses these passive devices and builds circuit blocks for the wireless transceiver. The book completes with a comprehensive list of references for further readings. Design and Modeling of Millimeter-wave CMOS Circuits for Wireless Transceivers is useful to show the analogue IC designer the issues involved in making the leap to millimetre-wave circuit designs. The graduate student and researcher can also use it as a starting point to understand the subject or proceed to innovative from the works described herein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the newest implementations of integrated photodiodes fabricated in nanometer standard CMOS technologies. It also includes the required fundamentals, the state-of-the-art, and the design of high-performance laser drivers, transimpedance amplifiers, equalizers, and limiting amplifiers fabricated in nanometer CMOS technologies. This book shows the newest results for the performance of integrated optical receivers, laser drivers, modulator drivers and optical sensors in nanometer standard CMOS technologies. Nanometer CMOS technologies rapidly advanced, enabling the implementation of integrated optical receivers for high data rates of several Giga-bits per second and of high-pixel count optical imagers and sensors. In particular, low cost silicon CMOS optoelectronic integrated circuits became very attractive because they can be extensively applied to short-distance optical communications, such as local area network, chip-to-chip and board-to-board interconnects as well as to imaging and medical sensors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of bipolar compatible CMOS (BiCMOS) is a fascinating one and of ever-growing practical importance. The "technology pendulum" has swung from the two extremes of preeminence of bipolar in the 1950s and 60s to the apparent endless horizons for VLSI NMOS technology during the 1970s and 80s. Yet starting in the 1980s severallimits were clouding the horizon for pure NMOS technology. CMOS reemerged as a· viable high density, high performance technology. Similarly by the mid 1980s scaled bipolar devices had not only demonstrated new high speed records, but early versions of mixed bipolar/CMOS technology were being produced. Hence the paradigm of either high density . Q[ high speed was metamorphasizing into an opportunity for both speed and density via a BiCMOS approach. Now as we approach the 1990s there have been a number of practical demonstrations of BiCMOS both for memory and logic applications and I expect the trend to escalate over the next decade. This book makes a timely contribution to the field of BiCMOS technology and circuit development. The evolution is now indeed rapid so that it is difficult to make such a book exhaustive of current developments. Probably equally difficult is the fact that the new technology opens a range of novel circuit opportunities that are as yet only formative in their development. Given these obstacles it is a herculean task to try to assemble a book on BiCMOS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MOS technology has rapidly become the de facto standard for mixed-signal integrated circuit design due to the high levels of integration possible as device geometries shrink to nanometer scales. The reduction in feature size means that the number of transistor and clock speeds have increased significantly. In fact, current day microprocessors contain hundreds of millions of transistors operating at multiple gigahertz. Furthermore, this reduction in feature size also has a significant impact on mixed-signal circuits. Due to the higher levels of integration, the majority of ASICs possesses some analog components. It has now become nearly mandatory to integrate both analog and digital circuits on the same substrate due to cost and power constraints. This book presents some of the newer problems and opportunities offered by the small device geometries and the high levels of integration that is now possible. The aim of this book is to summarize some of the most critical aspects of high-speed analog/RF communications circuits. Attention is focused on the impact of scaling, substrate noise, data converters, RF and wireless communication circuits and wireline communication circuits, including high-speed I/O. Contents: Achieving Analog Accuracy in Nanometer CMOS (M P Flynn et al.); Self-Induced Noise in Integrated Circuits (R Gharpurey & S Naraghi); High-Speed Oversampling Analog-to-Digital Converters (A Gharbiya et al.); Designing LC VCOs Using Capacitive Degeneration Techniques (B Jung & R Harjani); Fully Integrated Frequency Synthesizers: A Tutorial (S T Moon et al.); Recent Advances and Design Trends in CMOS Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (D J Allstot et al.); Equalizers for High-Speed Serial Links (P K Hanumolu et al.); Low-Power, Parallel Interface with Continuous-Time Adaptive Passive Equalizer and Crosstalk Cancellation (C P Yue et al.).
