This book was released on 1949 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report covers the theory and model test results on a radio frequency system for a frequency modulated cyclotron as required for acceleration of 350 Mev protons. A rotating condenser is used at approximately one-third of the length of the dee line from the shorted end. It is shown to be possible to operate through the range of approximately 9 to 24 megacycles per second as required for the acceleration of either protons or deuterons in the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A description is given of the frequency-modulated oscillator end its associated rf circuits as used in the l84-inch cyclotron for accelerating deuterons to 190 million volts or alpha particles to 380 million volts. A 9C21 water cooled tube is used in a grounded-grid circuit which is tightly coupled to the single-dee resonant circuit so that the oscillator follows the frequency of the dee over the wide range required. During normal operation the oscillator delivers approximately 20 kw of rf power to the dee system at an efficiency of 60 percent, giving 20 kv at the front of the dee, although the oscillator is capable of considerably more output. The frequency is swept from 12.5 mc to 9.0 mc approximately 100 times per second by a rotating condenser connected to the dee by a half-wave transmission line. Much of the history of the design, and reasons for choices made, are given, as it is felt this may be useful to others designing frequency-modulated oscillators for cyclotrons.

Download or read book Use of the Radio-frequency Quadrupole Structure as a Cyclotron Axial-buncher System written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) is a new linear accelerating structure being developed as a low-velocity linac. In this structure rf electric fields are used to simultaneously focus, bunch, and accelerate ions. The slow introduction of the accelerating field results in the adiabatic bunching of a dc ion beam with a large capture efficiency. Realistic computer simulations have shown that this new structure could also be used as a buncher in the axial injection system of a cyclotron. A description of the RFQ geometry and its general properties is given. A preliminary design is presented for a variable frequency RFQ to be used as buncher in the axial injection system of a variable energy cyclotron. The operating parameters for this RFQ are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impressive rate of particle loss by vertical beatfrequency (VBF) blowup in the low electrical field of a synchrocyclotron suggests the application of a radiofrequency perturbation to induce growth of radial oscillation amplitude for beam extraction. The use of an electrical field with a linear gradient on the outward side of a reference orbit and extending 60 in azimuth has been studied. The radiofrequency is chosen to make radial oscillations, described by an equation of the Hill type, unstable. Orbit calculations for a cyclotron with 50-Mev deuterons in a 17,000-gauss field have been made on a digital computer. Two essential features were observed: (a) a reasonable separation between successive turns influenced by the perturbation, and (b) a phasing of orbits so that the maxima following an increase in amplitude occur near one azimuth. An electrical gradient of 4.3 kw/cm/sup 2/ was used in the computations. The application of this system to variable-energy constant-frequency cyclotrons and very-high-energy accelerators is under study. The possibility of changing the electrical frequency and gradient to match operating conditions eliminates difficulties arising in magnetic extraction systems for variable-energy machines. (auth).
