Book excerpt: A low orbit satellite constellation which only provides navigation and positioning services for a certain specially designated region is capable of achieving the functions of global positioning systems. This system may possibly be what most nations hope for. Preliminary results show that, if it is desired to satisfy this requirement, there is a need for a satellite constellation composed of 27 low orbit satellites in five respective orbital planes in order to provide regional navigation and positioning services. From research associated with this article, it is proven that the concept of a regional positioning system formed from a low orbit satellite constellation is feasible. Although the number of individual satellites required is not necessarily a lot fewer compared to original global positioning systems, due to the low orbit satellites, however, delivery energies required by the satellites are, by contrast, much less compared to synchronous orbit satellites. This point should be an advantage which making use of low orbit satellite constellations to provide navigation and positioning functions can achieve.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation is currently used to provide positioning and timing worldwide. As satellite technology has improved over the years, the cost to develop and maintain the satellites has increased. Using a constellation design tool, it is possible to analyze the tradeoffs of new navigation constellation designs (Pareto fronts) that illustrate the tradeoffs between position dilution of precision (PDOP) and system cost. This thesis utilized Satellite Tool Kit (STK) to calculate PDOP values of navigation constellations, and the Unmanned Spacecraft Cost Model (USCM) along with the Small Spacecraft Cost Model (SSCM) to determine system cost. The design parameters used include Walker constellation parameters, orbital elements, and transmit power. The results show that the constellation design tool produces realistic solutions. Using the generated solutions, an analysis of the navigation constellation designs was presented.

Book excerpt: As near-Earth space becomes increasingly crowded with spacecraft and debris, the need for improved space situational awareness has become paramount. Contemporary ground-based systems are limited in the detection of very small or dim targets. In contrast, space-based systems, above most atmospheric interference, can achieve significant improvements in dim target detection by observing targets against a clutter-free space background, i.e. targets above the horizon (ATH). In this study, numerical methods for the evaluation of ATH coverage provided by constellations of satellites are developed. Analysis of ATH coverage volume is reduced to a planar analysis of cross-sectional coverage area in the orbit plane. The coverage model performs sequences of boolean operations between polygons representing cross-sections of satellite sensor coverage regions and regions of interest, returning the coverage area at the desired multiplicity. This methodology allows investigation of any coverage multiplicity for planar constellations of any size, and use of arbitrary sensor profiles and regions of interest. The implementation is applied to several constellation design problems demonstrating the utility of the numerical ATH coverage model in a constellation design process.
