Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design of Polyphase Generators and Motors During several recent years the author has given courses of lectures at three technical schools in London, on the subject of the design of electric machinery. These three schools were: the Northampton Institute of Technology; Faraday House; and University College. Various methods of procedure were employed and these ultimately developed into a general plan which (so far as it related to the subjects of Polyphase Generators and Polyphase Motors), has been followed in the present treatise. It was the author's experience that the students attending his lectures took an earnest interest in calculating designs of their own, in parallel with the working out of the typical design selected by the author for the purpose of his lectures. At the outset of the course, each member of the class was assigned the task of working out a design for a stipulated rated output, speed and pressure. Collectively, the designs undertaken by the class, constituted a series of machines, and co-operation was encouraged with a view to obtaining, at the conclusion of the course of lectures, a set of consistent designs. If a student encountered difficulty or doubt concerning some feature of his design, he was encouraged to compare notes with the students engaged in designing machines of the next larger and smaller ratings or the next higher and lower speeds. Ultimately the results for the entire group of designs were incorporated in a set of tables of which each student obtained blue prints. At two of these colleges, the "sandwich" system was in operation, that is to say, terms of attendance at the college were "sandwiched" with terms during which the student was employed in an electrical engineering works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Machine Design: The Design and Specification of Direct and Alternating Current Machinery A study of design is of the utmost importance to all students, because only by such a study can a knowledge of the limitations of machines be acquired. The machines discussed are those which have become more or less standard, namely, direct-cur rent generators and motors, alternating current generators, syn chronons motors, polyphase induction motors, and transformers; other apparatus seldom offers an electrical problem that is not discussed under one or more of the above headings. The principle followed throughout the work is to build up the design for the given rating by the use of a few fundamental formulae and design constants, the meaning and limits of which are discussed thoroughly, and the same procedure has been followed for the several pieces of apparatus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Polyphase Apparatus and Systems These notes are intended for electrical engineers, cen tral station men, and others who talk about, Operate, or are interested in polyphase machinery, While a certain gene ral acquaintance with alternating-current apparatus is pre supposed on the part of the reader, the author believes that the reader whose experience has been confined to direct current machinery, will, nevertheless, experience no great difficulty in reading and understanding this book. In view of the amazing increase in number and magni tude of installations for the transmission of power by poly phase currents, this book has been written with special reference to the problems that belong to this class Of engineering work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Engineering: The Theory and Characteristics of Electrical Circuits and Machinery The second edition contains all the material in the original text but much of it has been rewritten and a great deal of new material added. The more important additions include sections on complex alternating waves and wave analysis, on polyphase alternating current circuits, on the construction of the characteristic curves of direct-current generators and motors, on the design of direct and alternating-current machinery, on the Blondel diagram for the synchronous motor, on the symbolic method of analysis of the induction motor, on alternating-current commutator motors, and finally a chapter on electrical measuring instruments. The chapter on direct-current machinery has been entirely rewritten and much enlarged, and to make it complete a short chapter outlining the design of a direct-current generator has been added. This chapter and the other sections dealing with design are not intended to cover the work required in a course on design but only to give the student some idea of the formulae and constants involved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '[This] crisply succinct, beautifully synthesized study brings to life Tesla, his achievements and failures...and the hopeful thrum of an era before world wars.' - Nature Nikola Tesla is one of the most enigmatic, curious and controversial figures in the history of science. An electrical pioneer as influential in his own way as Thomas Edison, he embodied the aspirations and paradoxes of an age of innovation that seemed to have the future firmly in its grasp. In an era that saw the spread of power networks and wireless telegraphy, the discovery of X-rays, and the birth of powered flight, Tesla made himself synonymous with the electrical future under construction but opinion was often divided as to whether he was a visionary, a charlatan, or a fool. Iwan Rhys Morus examines Tesla's life in the context of the extraordinary times in which he lived and worked, colourfully evoking an age in which anything seemed possible, from capturing the full energy of Niagara to communicating with Mars. Shattering the myth of the 'man out of time', Morus demonstrates that Tesla was in all ways a product of his era, and shows how the popular image of the inventor-as-maverick-outsider was deliberately crafted by Tesla - establishing an archetype that still resonates today.

Book excerpt: AC/DC tells the little-known story of how Thomas Edison wrongly bet in the fierce war between supporters of alternating current and direct current. The savagery of this electrical battle can hardly be imagined today. The showdown between AC and DC began as a rather straightforward conflict between technical standards, a battle of competing methods to deliver essentially the same product, electricity. But the skirmish soon metastasized into something bigger and darker. In the AC/DC battle, the worst aspects of human nature somehow got caught up in the wires; a silent, deadly flow of arrogance, vanity, and cruelty. Following the path of least resistance, the war of currents soon settled around that most primal of human emotions: fear. AC/DC serves as an object lesson in bad business strategy and poor decision making. Edison's inability to see his mistake was a key factor in his loss of control over the ?operating system? for his future inventions?not to mention the company he founded, General Electric.
