Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design of Plate Girders In order to develop the designs consistently, the specifications Of the New York, New Haven Hartford Railroad are used as a basis and then discussed in detail as the design is proceeded with. The chapter on box girders has been worked out on similar lines, using a fixed load and without using any specifications. The material on deflections, contributed by Prof. W. H. Lawrence Of the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology, has never before been printed for general distribution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Design of Plate Girder Bridges This book has been written for the benefit of young Engineers and Draughtsmen engaged on the design of Constructional Steelwork, and is particularly intended for those whose training has been more on the theoretical than the practical side. It is the result of practical experience both in manufacture and design, and the examples given and opinions expressed are based on actual practice. In writing this book, it' has been assumed that the reader has a certain knowledge of Applied Mechanics and the Strength of Materials, and beyond mentioning the case of a Simple Beam, these subjects have. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate-Girder Railway Bridges The great majority of bridges on a line of railway are short-span plate-girder bridges. This book is intended to help those young engineers who, joining an engineer's office for the first time, find themselves engaged in this class of work. All complicated calculations have been avoided and the object in view has been to help the student or pupil to design a bridge of this kind efficiently, cheaply, simply, and in accordance with modern practice. The theoretical knowledge required is small, and an attempt has been made not to enlarge on this part of the subject more than absolutely necessary. Practical details with regard to construction and erection, together with particulars of market sizes of plates, &c., have been given as far as possible. A chapter has been given to specifications for steel and iron, and to some notes on the treatment of these metals in the manufacture of bridge work, accompanied by some remarks on the working stresses to be adopted in these materials. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bridge and Structural Design Both analytical and graphical methods have been employed for obtaining stresses, and the one which seemed best suited for any particular subject has been adopted. But few are given, as it was thought unnecessary to repeat information given in any of the rolling mills' hand-books. Although the hook is intended principally for students and draughts men, there are parts which may be of interest to practicing bridge designers. Particular attention is here drawn to Art. I7, which treats of the design of a knee - braced mill building; and to Art. 19, which discusses the rivet spacing and web splices in plate girders, in which one-eighth of the web plate is counted on as flange area. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphics and Structural Design This text is intended for the author's classes in General Engineering Design in Sibley College, Cornell University. The treatment of the subject has been kept as general as possible and is that used for his students during the past four or five years. The problems chosen for discussion are those on the border line between Civil and Mechanical Engineering. To the general designer knowledge of this subject is indispensable while acquaintance with the methods used in determining the stresses in, and the subsequent designing of, structures is of the greatest benefit to others in all designing for strength whether of machines or structures. Although the book is called "Graphics and Structural Design" the determination of the stresses has not been confined to graphical means; the other usual methods have been included. The design of a plate girder may seem out of keeping with the purpose of the book. The author formerly used a crane runway girder instead of the railway bridge, but decided that the railway girders made the more comprehensive and better problem. The design of the latter permitted the use of the moment table and acquainted the student with the usual method of treating locomotive and train loads. Incidentally, one who could design a railway plate girder was well prepared to design a runway girder, although the reverse was not so generally true. The author's practice is to use a set of problems paralleling the drawing-room work, to assign a number of these problems each week to the students upon which they recite. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Structural Design Elements of Structural Design, Vol. 1 IT might be well to say here what is repeated in the text that this work presupposes a knowledge of mechanics, stresses, and the mathematics on which they depend. The experience of the author in teaching and in practice has led him to believe that no available book presents all structural subjects so concisely that they can be covered in the time usually allotted by technical schools. Moreover, the fundamental principles of shop practice and erection, which govern the designer at every step, are not clearly developed. These faults the author has attempted to correct, using only orthodox methods of presentation. This volume considers wooden structures and the fundamental principles of design in steel. Should this work receive recognition, it is intended to follow it by a second volume on the Design of Simple Structures, plate girders, viaducts, truss bridges, mill buildings, high office buildings, and standpipes, and a third on the Design of Advanced Structures, cantilever, movable, and suspension bridges and arches. It has been thought best for the present to omit the data usually found in handbooks. As a considerable portion of this treatise is original data, corrections and suggestions will be especially welcome. How ever, a great deal of pains has been taken to eliminate errors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Roofs and Bridges: Bridge Design The present edition has been entirely rewritten in order to bring the subject fully up to date, for the changes in bridge design during the past eight years have been remarkable. The rapid increase in live loads on the principal railroads in this country has necessitated an unusually large amount of new construction to replace the old bridges, which were designed for much lighter traffic. The extensive scale on which this work had to be done led to a general revision of specifications and to careful attention to the design of details so as to secure greater stiffness as well as strength in the new structures. These changes include the introduction of some new forms of details; the elimination, as far as practicable, of adjustable members; the entire superseding of wrought iron by steel; the substitution Of riveted trusses for pin-connected trusses in the shorter spans; and increased care in designing the joints so as to reduce the secondary stresses to a minimum. In the descriptions Of the details of plate-girder and truss bridges, introduced in Chapters VI, VIII, and XI, only those are given which may be properly claimed as standard in the best recent practice. Special attention is called to the new feature of carefully selected references to engineering periodi cals where more extended descriptions and applications of various details may be found.
