Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides comprehensive coverage of technologies which integrate adsorption and biological processes in water and wastewater treatment. The authors provide both an introduction to the topic as well as a detailed discussion of theoretical and practical considerations. After a review of the basics involved in the chemistry, biology and technology of integrated adsorption and biological removal, they discuss the setup of pilot- and full-scale treatment facilities, covering powdered as well as granular activated carbon. They elucidate the factors that influence the successful operation of integrated systems. Their discussion on integrated systems expands from the effects of environmental to the removal of various pollutants, to regeneration of activated carbon, and to the analysis of such systems in mathematical terms. The authors conclude with a look at future needs for research and develoment. A truly valuable resource for environmental engineers, environmental and water chemists, as well as professionals working in water and wastewater treatment.

Some focus on the theory of performance and removal mechanisms while others focus on design features. This book focuses on solutions. It describes the challenges facing water providers to provide safe water that is acceptable to their customers, utility experiences using activated carbon, activated carbon applications, and design and procurement approaches. The appendices include detailed case studies and a life-cycle assessment demonstrating favorable sustainability considerations for activated carbon when compared to other treatment technologies. Never before has all of this information been together in one location. The what, why, and how of activated carbon are connected in this book and demonstrate why this treatment technology has maintained its status as an integral treatment technology in the quest for pure water over millennia"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Phenols are classified to be one of the most hazardous pollutants found in wastewater. They are discharged into rivers, lakes and seas, causing adverse effects on the environmental and human health. Adsorption is a well-known technique used to treat wastewater. Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are highly microporous efficient adsorbents due to their small diameters, high surface area and excellent volumetric capacity. In this work, ACFs were produced using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers using different methods and tools. The fibers were stabilized initially at 250 °C followed by carbonization at 850°C at a heating rate of 10°C/min and under the flow of nitrogen gas at a flow rate of 135ml/min. The carbonized fibers were subjected to physical (carbon dioxide) and chemical (potassium hydroxide) activation. The results showed that chemical activation using 3:1 ratio of KOH(wt/wt) produced fibers with a higher surface area of 2885m2/g compared to the physically activated fibers (774m2/g). The synthesized ACFs (Syn-ACFs) were compared and characterized in terms of morphology, thermal stability, composition and pore characteristics using SEM, EDS, TGA, CHN and nitrogen isotherm (Quantachrome). Bench scale batch experiments were carried out to determine and compare the adsorption efficiency, optimum parameters and the capacity of Syn-ACF and commercial ACFs (C-ACFs) for p-cresol removal. The adsorption optimum conditions using Syn-ACFs are: Syn-ACFs dosage = 1 g/l, contact time = 30 minutes, temperature = 25°C and initial pH = 4.6. The adsorption study on (Syn-ACFs) gave a higher removal efficiency of 91.0% of p-cresol compared to 71.6% (C-ACFs) at a concentration of 350ppm. In addition, the adsorption isotherms of p-cresol on C-ACFs and Syn-ACFs were found to follow the Langmuir isotherm equation; however, Syn-ACFs revealed a higher adsorption capacity (500mg/g) compared to C-ACFs (294 mg/g) at 25°C.The Syn-ACFs regeneration method was evaluated thermally at elevated temperatures and chemically using ethanol and n-hexane solvents. The thermal regeneration at 600°C achieved a higher removal efficiency of 84% compared to n-hexane (78%). The Syn-ACFs were evaluated for the treatment of produced water to ensure a removal of 71.2%. The results indicated that Syn-ACFs could be used as an efficient adsorbent for p-cresol removal in wastewater."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: U.S. troops face increasing risk of exposure to chemical and biological warfare threats as poorer nations and terrorist groups turn to these lower cost weapons for their arsenals. Despite the increased menace from these lethal agents, gas mask technology has remained virtually unchanged over the past several decades thus leaving soldiers at risk to newly developed nerve and pathogenic agents designed to defeat conventional GAC gas mask technology. EKOS Materials Corp. proposes a novel activated carbon fiber (ACF) that will combine the low cost and durability of GAC with tailored pore size and pore surface chemistry for improved defense against chemical weapons. One of the key advantages of this ACF is that it can be manufactured in a wide variety of product forms (textiles, felts, papers) which allows for vast design flexibility. Thus the potential exists to utilize carbon coated sub-micron glass fibers to replace both components of the current gas mask (HEPA filter and GAC) to greatly reduce pressure drop and achieve filtration/adsorption in a single step.

Book excerpt: Carbon membranes have great advantages of strong mechanical strength and high chemical stabilities, as well as high separation performance to reach the industrial attractive region. Further improvement on membrane performance can potentially offset the relatively high production cost compared to polymeric membranes. However, there are still some challenges related to fabrication of asymmetric carbon membranes, the controlling of structure and pore-size and module up-scaling for commercial application. The aim of this book is to provide the fundamentals on carbon membrane materials for the young researchers and engineers to develop frontier membrane materials for energy efficient separation process. This book describes the status and perspectives of both self-supported and supported carbon membranes from fundamentals to applications. The key steps on the development of high performance carbon membranes including precursor selection, tuning carbon membrane structure and regeneration are discussed. In the end, different potential applications both in gas and liquids separation are well described, and the future directions for carbon membrane development were pointed out. To this end, membrane science and engineering are set to play crucial roles as enabling technologies to provide energy efficient and cost-effective future solutions for energy and environment related processes. Based on this approach the research projects which are trying to find attractive carbon materials in our days are many. The published papers, per year, in the topic of carbon membranes, especially for biogas upgrading, natural gas sweetening and hydrogen purification, are numerous with very high impact. However, only few are the books which include relevant to the topic of carbon membrane technology. This book offers the condensed and interdisciplinary knowledge on carbon membranes, and provides the opportunity to the scientists who are working in the field of carbon membrane technology for gas and liquid separations to present, share, and discuss their contributions within the membrane community.

Book excerpt: The present book discusses the principal lignocellulosic precursors used in the elaboration of activated carbons in different countries such as Asia, America, Europe and Africa; the different methods and experimental conditions employed in the synthesis of activated carbons, including one analysis of the principal stages of the preparation such as carbonization and activation (i.e., chemical or physical activation). Also, the recent and more specialized techniques used in the characterization of activated carbons are discussed in this book. For example, the techniques employed to determine textural parameters (mercury porosimetry and gas adsorption isotherms at 77 K) and different spectroscopies to determine chemical functionality (Raman, FT-IR, etc.) and other X-Ray techniques. Additionally, an overview of the application of activated carbons obtained from lignocellulosic precursors for wastewater treatment. Specifically, the analysis and discussion are focused on the advantages and capabilities of activated carbons for the removal of relevant toxic compounds and pollutants from water such as heavy metals, dyes, phenol, etc. Finally, the use of pyrolysis method for the valorization of two Mexican typical agricultural wastes (orange peel and pecan nut shell) for energy and carbon production is considered in this book.
