This book was released on 2015 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses the design and test of an overmoded W-band Traveling Wave Tube (TWT). The TWT was designed to operate in the rectangular TM31 cavity mode at 94 GHz. The unwanted lower order, TM11 and TM21, modes were suppressed using selectively placed aluminum nitride dielectric loading. Simulations in 3-D CST Particle Studio confirmed suppression of unwanted modes due to dielectric loading and operation in the TM31 mode. The TWT was designed to operate at 31 kV with 310 mA and a 2.5 kG solenoid magnet. Simulations in both 1-D Latte and 3-D CST predicted 32 dB of gain, 200 MHz bandwidth, and 300 W peak output power for the TWT at 94 GHz. Test structures of 9- and 19- cavities were made via CNC direct machining. Cold test measurements showed suppression of the unwanted modes and transmission of the TM31 mode, which correlated well with HFSS simulations. Two final 87-cavity structures were built and cold tested. The experiment was designed and built in-house at MIT (with exception of the electron gun cathode, manufactured by industry). It was operated with a 3 microsecond pulsed power supply. A beam test was implemented which confirmed operation of the TWT set up and electron gun. The electron gun operated at 31 kV with 306+/-6 mA of current detected at the collector and 88 % transmission of current. Initial operation of the TWT showed zero-drive stable operation and demonstrated 8 dB of device gain and 10 W peak output power at 95.5 GHz. Following these first tests, the magnetic field alignment was improved and the second structure, which showed better circuit transmission in cold test, was installed. The overmoded TWT produced 21 2 dB device gain (defined as Pout/Pin) at 94.3 GHz and 27 W of saturated output power in zero-drive stable operation. The TWT was estimated to have about 6 dB of additional loss due to coupling into and out of the circuit. Taking that loss into account, the gain on the TWT circuit itself was estimated to be 27*/- 2 dB circuit gain. CST simulations for the experimental current and voltage predict 28 dB circuit gain, in good agreement with measurements. This experiment demonstrated the first successful operation of an overmoded TWT. The overmoded TWT is a promising approach to high power TWT operation at W-Band and to the extension of the TWT to terahertz frequencies.

Book Synopsis Development of a Cw Ku-band Traveling-wave Amplifier by : John T. Benton
Download or read book Development of a Cw Ku-band Traveling-wave Amplifier written by John T. Benton and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program objective was to advance the state of the art of high power Ku-band amplifier tubes by increasing instantaneous bandwidth and raising the frequency of operation. A coupled cavity, solenoid focused, modulating anode controlled traveling-wave amplifier was designed and an experimental model was fabricated, tested, and delivered. Three hundred (300) watts minimum and up to 1170 watts of CW power output was measured over a 2 GHz bandwidth at Ku-band. The technical soundess was thus demonstrated with an overall efficiency of greater than 24% over a substantial portion of the band. Recommendations were made for improvements in the design to increase power output and consequently gain and efficiency over the lowest 300 MHz in the band. (Author).

Download or read book Two New Ka-Band Traveling Wave Power Divider/Combiner Designs written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to develop a traveling wave power dividing/combining technique for a Ka-band 32-device high power amplifier system. Based on this technique, two main components of the power amplifier system have been designed. One component is a back-to-back connected 4-way waveguide-to-waveguide power divider/combiner and the other one is a back-to-back connected 8-way waveguide-to-microstrip power divider/combiner. Of the two components, the former has exhibited a 4 GHz (~12.5%) 0.5 dB bandwidth with 0.15 dB insertion loss at 32 GHz in simulation. The later utilizes a novel power coupling structure, which has the advantages of low profile, ease of fabrication and efficient heat sinking for the solid-state amplifiers. It was fabricated and experiments on this passive structure have demonstrated a minimum overall insertion loss of 1.8 dB at 32.5 GHz with a 3 dB bandwidth of 15%. The power amplifier composed of these two traveling-wave designs offers a potential broadband solution for solid-state amplifiers applied in high power millimeter-wave systems.

This book was released on 2004-04-07 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up-to-date coverage of the analysis and applications of coplanar waveguides to microwave circuits and antennas The unique feature of coplanar waveguides, as opposed to more conventional waveguides, is their uniplanar construction, in which all of the conductors are aligned on the same side of the substrate. This feature simplifies manufacturing and allows faster and less expensive characterization using on-wafer techniques. Coplanar Waveguide Circuits, Components, and Systems is an engineer's complete resource, collecting all of the available data on the subject. Rainee Simons thoroughly discusses propagation parameters for conventional coplanar waveguides and includes valuable details such as the derivation of the fundamental equations, physical explanations, and numerical examples. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical Engineering High-Power Microwave Sources and Technologies A volume in the IEEE Press Series on RF and Microwave Technology Roger D. Pollard and Richard Booton, Series Editors Written by a prolific group of leading researchers, High-Power Microwave Sources and Technologies focuses primarily on the high-power microwave (HPM) technology most appropriate for military applications. It highlights the advances achieved from 1995 to 2000 as the result of a US Department of Defense (DoD) funded, $15 million Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program. The grant created a synergy between researchers in the DoD laboratories and the academic community, and established links with the microwave vacuum electronics industry, which has led to unprecedented collaborations that transcend laboratory and disciplinary boundaries. This essential reference provides the history, state-of-the-art, and possible future of HPM source research and technologies. The first alternative to the multiplicity of detailed applications-based HPM books and journal articles, this book familiarizes the reader with recent advances in this rapidly changing field. It presents a compendium of valuable information on HPM sources, representing significant enabling technologies, including beam and rf control, cathodes, windows, and computational techniques. The era of utilizing computational techniques to electronically design an HPM source prior to actually building the hardware has arrived. Gain insight into proven techniques and solutions that will enhance your source design. High-Power Microwave Sources and Technologies is an invaluable resource to researchers active in the field, faculty, graduate and post-graduate students. Special Note: All royalties realized from the sale of this book will fund the future research and publications activities of graduate students in the HPM field.
