Book excerpt: This book describes most recent advances and limitations concerning design of adhesive joints under humid conditions and discusses future trends. It presents new approaches to predict the failure load after exposure to load, temperature and humidity over a long period of time. With the rapid increase in numerical computing power there have been attempts to formalize the different environmental contributions in order to provide a procedure to predict assembly durability, based on an initial identification of diffusion coefficients and mechanical parameters for both the adhesive and the interface. A coupled numerical model for the joint of interest is then constructed and this allows local water content to be defined and resulting changes in adhesive and interface properties to be predicted.

Book excerpt: The intention of this book is that it should contain everything an engineer needs to know to be able to design and produce adhesively bonded joints which are required to carry significant loads. The advan tages and disadvantages of bonding are given, together with a sufficient understanding of the necessary mechanics and chemistry to enable the designer to make a sound engineering judgement in any particular case. The stresses in joints are discussed extensively so that the engineer can get sufficient philosophy or feel for them, or can delve more deeply into the mathematics to obtain quantitative solutions even with elasto plastic behaviour. A critical description is given of standard methods of testing adhesives, both destructively and non-destructively. The essen tial chemistry of adhesives and the importance of surface preparation are described and guidance is given for adhesive selection by me ans of check lists. For many applications, there will not be a unique adhesive which alone is suitable, and factors such as cost, convenience, produc tion considerations or familiarity may be decisive. A list of applications is given as examples. The authors wish to increase the confidence of engineers using adhesive bonding in load-bearing applications by the information and experience presented. With increasing experience of adhesives en gineering, design will become more elegant as weH as more fitted to its products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adhesively-bonded joints provide many advantages over conventional mechanical fasteners and are increasingly receiving attention as an alternative to mechanical joints in engineering applications. The traditional fasteners usually result in the cutting of fibers and hence the introduction of stress concentrations, both of which reduce structural integrity. By contrast, bonded joints are more continuous and have potential advantages of strength-to-weight ratio, design flexibility, and ease of fabrication. This book provides an overview of available analytical methods as well as numerical methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Adhesives Uniquely provides up-to-date and comprehensive information on the topic in an easily-accessible form. A structural adhesive can be described as a high-strength adhesive material that is isotropic in nature and bonds two or more parts together in a load-bearing structure. A structural adhesive material must be capable of transmitting the stress/load without loss of structural integrity within design limits. There are many types of established structural adhesives, including epoxy, urethane, acrylic, silicone, etc. Structural Adhesives comprises nine chapters and is divided into two parts: Part 1, Preparation, Properties, and Characterization; Part 2, Applications. The topics covered include: structural epoxy adhesives; biological reinforcement of epoxies as structural adhesives; marble dust reinforced epoxy structural adhesive composites; characterization of various structural adhesive materials; effects of shear and peel stress distributions on the behavior of structural adhesives; the inelastic response of structural aerospace adhesives; structural reactive acrylic adhesives: their preparation, characterization, properties, and applications; application of structural adhesives in composite connections; and naval applications of structural adhesives. Audience This book should be of much use and interest to adhesionists, materials scientists, adhesive technologists, polymer scientists, and those working in the construction, railway, automotive, aviation, bridge, and shipbuilding industries.

Book excerpt: Some of the futuristic applications are nanotubes for electrically conductive coatings and to increase the rate of reaction of thermoset resins; organosilane dendrimer coatings; buckyball coatings for machine parts; and metals for conductive coatings in inks. The technology is limited to substantially specialized applications due to the high cost per unit volume needed to reduce the size of the particles and the need to add surface modifiers to prevent the particles from agglomerating. Recent research efforts focus primarily on the functionalization of the particle surface of the nanoparticles to make them more compatible with the coating resin systems, so that easy dispersion, low viscosity, and covalent bonding are provided between the particles and the resins.

Since the first symposium, held in 1982, there had been tremendous research activity dealing with many aspects of adhesive joints. This volume contains a total of 21 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Therefore, this book is not merely a collection of unreviewed manuscripts, but rather represents information which has passed peer scrutiny. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh. The book is divided into three parts: 1) General Papers; 2) Evaluation, Analysis and Testing; and 3) Durability Aspects. The topics covered include: molecular brush concepts in enhancing strength of adhesive joints; factors affecting performance of adhesive joints; substrate preparation and modification; interfacial/interphasial aspects; determination of locus of failure; analysis and evaluation of adhesive joints using various techniques; testing of adhesive joints; stress analysis; application of fracture mechanics; durability aspects; accelerated environmental degradation of adhesive joints; solvent uptake; and adhesives with special characteristics. This volume represents a commentary on the current R&D activity in this arena and it should be of great value and interest to anyone interested in adhesive bonding / adhesive joints. Furthermore, this volume contains a number of excellent review/overview articles, which should be of particular value.
