Users may establish design criteria exceeding the minimum performance requirement for added confidence in a design. The cycle requirements noted in Tables 1 and 2 are based on Weibull statistics using 2 parameter, median ranks, 50% confidence level and 90% reliability, and beta equal to 2, typically noted as B10C50. For other wheels intended for normal highway use and temporary use on passenger cars, light trucks, and multipurpose vehicles, see SAE J328. For wheels used on trailers drawn by passenger cars, light trucks, or multipurpose vehicles, see SAE J1204. For bolt together military wheels, see SAE J1992. This document does not cover other special application wheels and rims. SAE J267 practitioners have typically performed multiple cornering and radial fatigue tests when assessing a wheel design's conformance with this recommended practice. Running multiple tests enhances the confidence and reliability of the results. In this revision, this common practice has been formalized by introducing a set of sample sizes and corresponding cycle requirements based on Weibull statistics.Previous publications of SAE J267 contained terminology to "provide minimum performance requirements". This terminology was not consistently interpreted by practitioners. To clarify the meaning, a definition of the term "minimum performance requirement" has been added.An additional cause for termination was added for aluminum wheels.

The hubs included have bolt circle diameters from 165.1 to 335.0 mm (6.50 to 13.19 in). It is up to each hub and/or wheel for demountable rims developer to determine what test method, accelerated load factor and cycle life requirements are applicable to obtain satisfactory service life in a given application. When deviations from the procedures recommended herein are made, it is the responsibility of the hub and/or wheel for demountable rims developer to modify other parameters to obtain satisfactory service life. During the 5-year review we added the test fixture adapter dimensions for metric mounting systems XVII and XVIII along with the mounting nut torque values for the M14X2, 2-piece flange nut which makes this document consistent with SAE J694. We also upgraded Table 2 "Mounting Nut Torques for Laboratory Wheel/Rim Tests", and Table 3 "Static Loaded Radii for Bending Moment Calculation" to be consistent with the tables in SAE J267. Also, the nomenclature for the spoke wheel was changed to wheel for demountable rims. The angular cornering fatigue test (40 degree) method and the dynamic radial fatigue test method were removed from this document as they are no longer being used.

Book excerpt: A dynamic testing fatigue was designed, built and utilized to produce data sets that pertain to the stresses applied on a specimen, along with the number of cycles it takes to eventually meet fatigue failure. To that end, an aluminum alloy specimen successfully had its S-N Curve (Strength Vs. Endurance: Number of Cycles) graphed by collecting relevant data points through several trials at varying loads of stress. While an aluminum alloy was used to verify that the machine is capable of producing the necessary data, this setup is capable of testing many other materials and producing their particular S-N curves. When compared with the theoretically estimated values, the experiment values sported a percentage error ranging from 11.34 % ~16.58% which can be explained due to the presence of frictional/vibration losses.

Mobile home service is outside the scope of this document.There are two basic test procedures described, a cornering fatigue test and radial fatigue test. The cornering test is directed at the wheel disc; whereas the radial test also examines the rim and attachment portion of the wheel. Both test procedures are required to obtain a thorough examination of the wheel. Definitions were revised to reflect those of SAE J2530.Wheel markings were added same as in SAE J2530 to reflect marking standard in light truck pass car and aftermarket wheels.Test termination revisited to be same as in SAE J2530 for consistency.A method of calculating SLR recommended by JATMA and Tire & Rim Association.Test sample selection and associated cycles necessary to maintain B90C50 confidence of results see Tables 1 and 2.A reduced service factor and associated increased cycle requirement are added to Table 2. Reduced service factors allow for better time efficiency of fatigue tests where tire consumption or stud breakage is excessive.
