Book excerpt: Vehicular networks (VANETs) have distinctive structures that distinguish them in comparison to general mobile ad hoc networks. In this thesis we identify the relevant special structures that do exist, and show how they can be exploited to design a MAC layer that provides better performance than a MAC layer designed without taking such structures into account. Particular important examples of the structures in VANETs are: (i) Periodic broadcast is the common transmission pattern due to the requirements of vehicular safety applications; (ii) GPS is available on nodes; (iii) Node mobility is constrained along one-dimensional roadways, and traffic can only move in one of the two directions of each roadway; and (iv) Traffic moving on one lane in one direction of a road has group mobility. These structures offer unique exploitable opportunities for building specific protocols tailored to VANETs which perform better than other general purpose protocols designed for structureless networks. We will show that, at the MAC layer, these structures can be thoroughly exploited to design a protocol based on dynamic TDMA that is well suited for VANETs. We present the Dynamic Channel Partition and Reservation (DCPR) Protocol, which is a specific VANET MAC protocol designed for operating a dynamic TDMA mechanism in a way robust to vehicular mobility, by dynamically partitioning the set of TDMA channels for the use of vehicles according to their different velocities. DCPR also enhances the basic dynamic TDMA mechanism with features for proper operation in a wireless environment with fading. We evaluate DCPR with simulations via ns-2 and VanetMobiSim, using the Intelligent Driver Model with Lane Changing. Our simulation results show that DCPR achieves packet loss rates which are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those obtained by IEEE 802.11p at various vehicle densities and in different vehicular traffic environments. Moreover, DCPR increases goodput by a factor as high as nine in a wireless environment with fading compared to a basic dynamic TDMA protocol. With regard to variations in vehicular traffic, DCPR maintains stable performance across all levels of traffic asymmetry in a highway scenario. Based on the systematic exploitation of group mobility, we are led to suggest an overarching design based on the Velocity Differentiated Dynamic Channel Partition (VDDCP) Mechanism. In the scenarios we have evaluated, DCPR equipped with the VDDCP mechanism performs as well as the original DCPR, and further evaluation is required to determine if there are other scenarios of vehicular traffic geometries and intensities in which the VDDCP mechanism delivers significantly better performance. To summarize, DCPR shows the possibility of building a MAC layer for VANETs that provides high packet delivery rate, supporting the development of vehicular safety applications that demand reliability.

Book excerpt: Road crashes and their damages represent a serious issue and are one of the main causes of people death. In this context, Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) are deployed to reduce the risk of road accident as well as to improve passengers' comfort by allowing vehicles to exchange different kinds of data which ranges widely from road safety and traffic management to infotainment. Nowadays, safety applications are receiving a great deal of attention from researchers as well as from automobile manufacturers. In this thesis, we particularly focus on safety-critical applications, designed to provide drivers assistance in dangerous situations and to avoid accidents in highway environments. Such applications must guarantee to the vehicles access to the medium and have strict requirements regarding end-to-end delay and packet loss ratio. Therefore, our main goal is to propose new medium access control and routing protocols, which can efficiently adapt to frequent changing VANET network topologies. After a comprehensive overview of free-contention MAC protocols, we propose several solutions, based on Time Division Multiple Access Technique (TDMA). We have designed DTMAC, a fully distributed TDMA-based MAC protocol, which does not rely on an expensive infrastructure. DTMAC uses vehicles' locations and a slot reuse concept to ensure that vehicles in adjacent areas have collision-free schedule. Using simulations, we prove that DTMAC provides a lower rate of access and merging collisions than VeMAC, a well-known TDMA based MAC protocol in VANET. Then, in order to ensure that event-driven safety messages can be sent over a long distance, we propose TRPM, a TDMA aware Routing Protocol for Multi-hop communication. Our routing scheme is based on a cross layer approach between the MAC and the routing layers, in which the intermediate vehicles are selected using TDMA scheduling information. Simulation results show that TRPM provides better performances in terms of average end-to-end delay, average number of hops and average delivery ratio. In the second part, we focus on coordinator-based TDMA scheduling mechanisms. First, we propose the Centralized TDMA based MAC protocol (CTMAC) which uses Road Side Units (RSUs) as a central coordinator to create and maintain the TDMA schedules. CTMAC implements an Access Collision Avoidance mechanism that can prevent the access collision problem occurring more than twice between the same vehicles that are trying to access the channel at the same time. Using simulation we show an improvement in terms of access and merging collisions as well as the overhead required to create and maintain the TDMA schedules compared to distributed scheduling mechanisms. However, in the CTMAC protocol, fast moving vehicles will need to compete for new slots after a short period of time when they leave their current RSU area, which makes a centralized scheduling approach very expensive. In order to further improve the performance of coordinator-based TDMA scheduling mechanisms, we focus on cluster-based TDMA MAC protocols in which some vehicles in the network are elected to coordinate the channel access, allowing the vehicles to remain connected with their channel coordinator for a longer period of time. To this end, first we propose an adaptive weighted clustering protocol, named AWCP, which is road map dependent and uses road IDs and vehicle directions to make the clusters' structure as stable as possible. Then, we formulate the AWCP parameter tuning as a multi-objective problem and we propose an optimization tool to find the optimal parameters of AWCP to ensure its QoS. Next, we propose ASAS, an adaptive slot assignment strategy for a cluster-based TDMA MAC protocol. This strategy is based on a cross layer approach involving TDMA and AWCP. The objective is to overcome the inter-cluster interference issue in overlapping areas by taking into account vehicles' locations and directions when the cluster head assign slots.

We develop a QoS model for safety messages consistent with the active safety systems literature. Each message has a range and useful lifetime. The QoS target is to have each message be received with high probability within its specified lifetime by each vehicle within its specified range. The protocol design is based on rapidly re-broadcasting each message multiple times within its lifetime in combination with the 802.11 DCF. This makes the design compatible with the emerging standards for DSRC. Six different design variations are proposed. We derive equations and develop a simulation tool to assess the performance of the designs. Using these we identify the best and most easily implemented of the designs. Design performance depends on the number of re-broadcasts, power, modulation, coding, and vehicular traffic volumes. We show that under certain assumptions on the loss probability tolerated by safety applications, the design is able to transport safety messages in vehicular ad-hoc networks.

The concept of adaptation is emphasized in the Adaptation in Wireless Communications Series through a unified framework across all layers of the wireless protocol stack ranging from the physical layer to the application layer, and from cellular systems to next-generation wireless networks. Adaptation and Cross Layer Design in Wireless Networks is devoted to adaptation in the data link layer, network layer, and application layer. The book presents state-of-the-art adaptation techniques and methodologies, including cross-layer adaptation, joint signal processing, coding and networking, selfishness in mobile ad hoc networks, cooperative and opportunistic protocols, adaptation techniques for multimedia support, self –organizing routing, and tunable security services. It presents several new theoretical paradigms and analytical findings which are supported with various simulation and experimental results. Adaptation in wireless communications is needed in order to achieve high capacity and ubiquitous communications. The current trend in wireless communication systems is to make adaptation dependent upon the state of the relevant parameters in all layers of the system. Focusing on simplified cross layer design approaches, this volume describes advanced techniques such as adaptive resource management, adaptive modulation and coding, 4G communications, QoS, diversity combining, and energy and mobility aware MAC protocols. The first volume in the series, Adaptive Signal Processing in Wireless Communications (cat no.46012) covers adaptive signal processing at the physical layer.

Book excerpt: This paper studies the design of ad-hoc Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for a vehicle or the roadside to send safety messages to other vehicles. Such a protocol is needed by Advanced Vehicle Safety Systems (AVSS) and the national Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) architecture. The problem is formulated to meet the communication requirements of vehicle safety applications and the DSRC multi-channel operation model. We propose several ah-hoc protocols, all based on the principles of repetition coding. Analytical bounds of the protocols' performance are derived. Simulations are conducted to compare the performance of the protocols in terms of probability of reception success and channel busy time. The best among the proposed protocols is shown to significantly outperform IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in vehicle safety communication environment. We obtain the optimal relation between the performance and protocol design, in particular that of data rate and transmission power. The sensitivity of the protocol performance is tested under various communication conditions as well as vehicle traffic conditions. Feasible combinations of the communication and highway traffic parameters are found to meet specific performance requirements on communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of intelligent transportation systems is one of the most important strategies for making roads safer and more efficient. The key technology underpinning all such systems, from cooperative safety systems to electronic tolling, is wireless communications. Vehicles must be able to communicate with each other, and with fixed infrastructure, in real time. One promising architecture involves forming an ad hoc network among the vehicles and taking advantage of the peer-to-peer connectivity to reduce infrastructure costs. In this dissertation, we consider the design and analysis of medium access control and network layer protocols for vehicular ad hoc networks. In particular, we examine the problem of distributing content over many hops from a source to a destination. The fundamental challenge in such systems is the inability of the vehicles to coordinate with each other. Because of the high frequency at which vehicles enter and exit the road, and the fact that vehicles may be moving at widely varying speeds, the topology is continuously changing. Therefore, centralized scheduling of transmissions to avoid collisions and global routing of packets is either technically infeasible or prohibitively expensive. We propose instead a class of uncoordinated protocols, based on randomized channel access and network coding. The key idea behind the coding is for the vehicles to transmit random combinations of all the packets that they have received, instead of simply forwarding packets. This scheme does not require link level feedback, and thus vehicles do not need to track the identities of their current neighbors. We first consider a minimally coordinated protocol, where the vehicles on a road are partitioned into spatial blocks. The block structure is used to funnel waves of data down the road, while the vehicles within each block randomly contend with each other for the channel. We show that when the vehicles use network coding in this scheme, the end-to-end throughput is constant, as long as the number of blocks in the network does not grow exponentially in the vehicle density. Network coding allows for the reliable transport of data over many hops at the same rate at which data could be sent over a single hop. Then we consider a completely uncoordinated protocol, which does not even require the assignment of vehicles to spatial blocks. We begin by providing a general algorithm for computing the throughput of an arbitrary network using such a protocol. The main technical contribution is to account for the fact that intermediate nodes may temporarily not have any new packets to transmit to their neighbors, due to the random channel access. We prove that the throughput of this wireless network is equal to the throughput of an equivalent wired network, despite the randomized medium access strategy. This result has application in a variety of other contexts, where it is often assumed for tractability that relays always have data when they use the channel. We then apply this result to the problem of finding the throughput in an uncoordinated vehicular ad hoc network. In a congested highway, where the connectivity graph is homogeneous, a constant throughput can be provided to receivers that are located at an arbitrary distance from the source. In essence, every vehicle can be thought of as a digital repeater, despite the packet losses due to collisions.
