In this thesis, 2 degrees of freedom of a linear quarter car active suspension system is designed, which is subject to different disturbances on the road. Since the parametric uncertainty in the spring, the shock absorber, mass and the actuator has been considered, robust control is used. In this thesis, H∞ and μ− synthesis controllers are used to improve the driving comfort and the ability to drive the car on the road. For the analysis of the time domain, using a MATLAB script program and performed a test using four disturbance inputs of the road (bump, random, sinusoidal and harmonic) for the suspension deflection, the acceleration of the body and the body travel for the active suspension with the H∞ controller and active suspension with μ− synthesis controller and the comparative simulation and reference results demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented active suspension system with μ− synthesis controller. In addition, in this thesis, comparison have been made between the active suspension system with μ−synthesis controller and 5 different robust controller for suspension deflection, body acceleration and body travel tests using bump, random, sinusoidal pavements and harmonic road disturbances. Body accelerations comparison of the active suspension system with μ−synthesis controller with VW (Volkswagen) Passat B5 passenger car is done for a bump road input disturbance and the result shows that there is a 50% reduction in body acceleration for the active suspension system with μ− synthesis controller.

A detailed comparison between quarter-car and half-car active suspension approaches is provided for improving two important scenarios in vehicle dynamics, i.e. ride quality and road holding. Having used a half-car vehicle model, heave and pitch motion are analyzed for those scenarios, with cargo mass as a variable. The governing equations of the system are analysed in a multi-energy domain package, i.e., 20-Sim. System equations are presented in the bond-graph language to facilitate calculation of energy usage. The results present optimum set of gains for both ride quality and road holding scenarios are the gains which has derived when maximum allowable cargo mass is considered for the vehicle. The energy implications of substituting passive suspension units with active ones are studied by considering not only the energy used by the actuator, but also the reduction in energy lost through the passive damper. Energy analysis showed less energy was dissipated in shock absorbers when either quarter-car or half-car controllers were used instead of passive suspension. It was seen that more energy could be saved by using half-car active controllers than the quarter-car ones. Results also proved that using active suspension units, whether quarter-car or half-car based, under those realistic limitations is energy-efficient and suggested.

Book excerpt: With the new advancements in the vibration control strategies and controllable actuator manufacturing, the semi-active actuators (dampers) are finding their way as an essential part of vibration isolators, particularly in vehicle suspension systems. This is attributed to the fact that in a semi-active system, the damping coefficients can be adjusted to improve ride comfort and road handling performances. The currently available semi-active damper technologies can be divided into two main groups. The first uses controllable electromagnetic valves. The second uses magnetorheological (MR) fluid to control the damping characteristics of the system. Leading automotive companies such as General Motors and Volvo have started to use semi-active actuators in the suspension systems of high-end automobiles, such as the Cadillac Seville and Corvette, to improve the handling and ride performance in the vehicle. But much more research and development is needed in design, fabrication, and control of semi-active suspension systems and many challenges must be overcome in this area. Particularly in the area of heavy vehicle systems, such as light armored vehicles, little related research has been done, and there exists no commercially available controllable damper suitable for the relatively high force and large displacement requirements of such application. As the first response to these requirements, this thesis describes the design and modeling of an in-house semi-active twin-tube shock absorber with an internal variable solenoid-actuated valve. A full-scale semi-active damper prototype is developed and the shock absorber is tested to produce the required forcing range. The test results are compared with results of the developed mathematical model. To gain a better understanding of the semi-active suspension controlled systems and evaluate the performance of those systems, using perturbation techniques this thesis provides a detailed nonlinear analysis of the semi-active systems and establishes the issue of nonlinearity in on-off semi-active controlled systems. Despite different semi-active control methods and the type of actuators used in a semi-active controlled system, one important practical aspect of all hydro-mechanical computer controlled systems is the response-time. The longest response-time is usually introduced by the actuator -in this case, controllable actuator - in the system. This study investigates the effect of response-time in a semi-active controlled suspension system using semi-active dampers. Numerical simulations and analytical techniques are deployed to investigate the issue. The performance of the system due to the response-time is then analyzed and discussed. Since the introduction of the semi-active control strategy, the challenge was to develop methods to effectively use the capabilities of semi-active devices. In this thesis, two semi-active control strategies are proposed. The first controller to be proposed is a new hybrid semi-active control strategy based on the conventional Rakheja-Sankar (R-S) semi-active control to provide better ride-handling quality for vehicle suspension systems as well as industrial vibration isolators. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this new strategy, the analytical method of averaging and the numerical analysis method are deployed. In addition, a one-degree-of-freedom test bed equipped with a semi-active magnetorheological (MR) damper is developed. The tests are performed using the MATLAB XPC-target to guarantee the real-time implementation of the control algorithm. The second controller is an intelligent fuzzy logic controller system to optimize the suspension performance. The results from this intelligent system are compared with those of several renowned suspension control methods such as Skyhook. It is shown that the proposed controller can enhance concurrently the vehicle handling and ride comfort, while consuming less energy than existing control methodologies. The key goal of this thesis is to employ the existing knowledge of the semi-active systems together with the new ideas to develop a semi-active suspension system. At the same time, development of an experimental simulation system for real-time control of an experimental test bed is considered. To achieve its goals and objectives, this research study combines and utilizes the numerical simulations and analytical methods, as well as lab-based experimental works. The challenge in this research study is to identify practical and industrial problems and develop proper solutions to those problems using viable scientific approaches.

The benefits of these suspensions are well established: being able to both increase the ride quality for the vehicle occupants as well as promote better handling. Unfortunately, active suspensions reduce fuel efficiency and have seldom been implemented on commuter vehicles. As a result, electrodynamic dampers are currently being researched as a means to approach the performance of a fully active suspension with minimal energy consumption. This dissertation presents current research on the capabilities of electrodynamic actuators (EDA) as a means to approach the performance of a fully active suspension with minimal or no energy consumption. The regenerative capabilities of these actuators are investigated during fully active operation for a range of controller types - emphasizing road holding, ride, and energy regeneration. Two model predictive controllers (MPC) are constructed; a standard and frequency weighted MPC. The resulting controlled system is subjected to ISO roads A-D and the results are presented. For all of the standard MPC weightings, the suspension was able recover more energy than is required to run the suspension actively. Frequency weighting the controller increased suspension performance while also regenerating 3-12% more energy than the standard MPC. Results will be shown on the regenerative capabilities of electrodynamic actuators during fully active operation for a range of controller types - emphasizing road holding, ride, and energy regeneration. A major finding is the suspension's ability to recover more energy than is required to run actively. Additionally, optimal energy regeneration settings occurred on a Pareto trade-off curve for ride comfort and road holding. The parameter effects on the harvesting capabilities are briefly discussed using a static discrete linear quadratic regulator for active control. Results indicate there is a subset of system parameters that greatly affect the harvesting capability of the actuator and that given an adequate set of design parameters the actuator will be capable of harvesting more energy than is necessary for active operation. The second part of the dissertation covers a new type of active suspension that is designed based upon sliding mode control (SMC). Traditional SMC requires an equal number of actuators and control objectives. This dissertation presents a design method for controlling multiple sliding surfaces of nonlinear systems with matched uncertainty using a single actuator. Sliding mode control, in general, requires one actuator for every control objective. Compared to the vast literature on sliding mode control, there has been little work on general theories that can be applied to underactuated nonlinear control. A sufficient condition to guarantee simultaneous robust stabilization of multiple surfaces is derived. Multiple interpretations of the main result are considered, giving rise to different control algorithms. Examples are given to show the validity and trade-offs associated with each design. Background theory is presented for a stabilizing weighted single input multiple output (SIMO) sliding mode design. An active control suspension control design based upon this development is presented and simulated validation is shown. Using the developed theory, a fully active suspension controller is designed based upon multiple surface sliding mode control and the resulting controller is compared to known control designs for a passive, skyhook, and groundhook dampers. It is shown that the sliding mode based design has many more design parameters that can be utilized to achieve performance beyond that of known controllers. A simple algorithm to alter the suspension stiffness using a variable-volume air spring is presented and results of simulation of the controllers with an effective time varying stiffness are presented as well.
