Since it is an unregulated frequency, the 2.4-GHz band also suffers from enormous interference effects generated by devices like microwave ovens that will cause problems in wireless local area networks (WLANs). On the other hand, the 5-GHz band provides lots of unlicensed spectrum and it has less interference. Recently, much research on wireless transceivers has been focused on the 5-GHz standard. The high demand of technology in the wireless transceivers has motivated us to study the feasibility of current CMOS technology for the implementation of radio-frequency (RF) and microwave circuits. The advance in the CMOS technology has become attractive due to the possibility of integrating the whole system on a single chip. The rapid progress of scaled CMOS technology has put standard CMOS processes in a favorable role in RF circuit fabrication. This project focused on designing a 5-GHz two-stage cascode CMOS low noise amplifier (LNA) using a standard 0.18 [mu]m fabrication process. The LNA employed inductive source degeneration topology with on-chip passive spiral inductors. An intermediate inductor is used to increase the overall gain and to decrease the noise figure. The extracted simulation results show that CMOS technology has the capability to achieve a 5-GHz LNA. The LNA draws a 7.2 mW power on a 1.8V power supply while achieving a power gain of 21 dB and noise figure of 1.54 dB. Since inductors are crucial in the design of LNA, different sizes of on-chip passive spiral inductors were also designed and characterized. The LNA and inductors are fabricated using free fabrication service provided by MOSIS for educational programs.

Besides, detailed derivation of equations relating to the parameters of the LNA’s performance metrics help LNA designers in understanding how the performance metrics of the LNA can be optimized to meet the desired specification. Electromagnetic analyses using Sonnet, an electromagnetic tool able to replace the conventional post-layout simulation with resistance and capacitance parasitic extraction for more accurate frequency performance prediction are presented. The electromagnetic method is proposed to be used in the LNA design as it can accurately predict the LNA’s performance before tape-out for first-pass fabrication. MATLAB codes are provided to generate important S-parameters and noise figure values.

The low noise amplifier is designed using the state-of-the-art complementary metal oxide semiconductor 45 nm technology. Berkeley's Predictive Technology Model (PTM) is used to generate a fairly accurate mathematical model and the SPICE data is implemented into the BSIM 4 version of the Advanced Design Systems (ADS) program. The low noise design strategy is mainly based on the analysis of high frequency CMOS operation. This LNA has two stages: the first stage is a RL feedback amplifier with an inductive load, and the second stage is a RC feedback amplifier with an inductive load. High frequency small signal MOSFET models with shunt-shunt feedback are used to determine the input impedance, output impedance and gain equations governing this circuit. Simulation results of this two stage feedback amplifier demonstrate a gain of 19 dB over a 6 GHz bandwidth, high linearity, and a low noise figure-less than 2.4 dB. This is a low voltage high current amplifier which requires a supply voltage of simply 0.5 V and has low power consumption (~13.5 mW).

In general, the higher the carrier frequency, the better the directivity, but the more difficult the radio design.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores the use of a 22-nm CMOS-SOI technology in the design of a two-stage amplifier which targets wide bandwidth, low noise and modest linearity in the 28 GHz band. A design methodology with a transformer-coupled, noise-matching interstage is presented for minimizing the noise factor of the two-stage amplifier. Furthermore, benefits of interstage noise matching are discussed. Next, a transistor layout for minimizing noise and maintaining sufficient electromigration reliability is described. It is followed by an analysis of transformer configurations and a transformer layout example is depicted. To verify the design methodology, two amplifier prototypes with noise-matching interstage were fabricated. Measurement shows that the first design achieves a peak gain of 20.7 dB and better-than-10-dB input and output return losses within a frequency range of 22.5 to 32.2 GHz. The lowest noise figure of 1.81 dB is achieved within the frequency range. Input IP3 of -13.4 dBm is achieved with the cost of 17.3 mW DC power consumption. When the bias at the back-gate is lowered from 2 V to 0.62 V, the power consumption is decreased to 5.6 mW and the peak gain drops down to 17.9 dB. Minimum noise figure increases from 1.81 to 2.13 dB and input IP3 drops to -14.4 dBm. The folded output stage in the second design improves the input IP3 to -6.7 dBm at the cost of 35 mW total power consumption. The peak gain of the second design is 20.1 dB, and the lowest noise figure of 1.73 dB within a frequency range of 23.8 to 32.4 GHz. Both designs occupy about 0.05 mm2 active area.

The project focused on designing a 5.5 GHz linear LNA using a standard UMC.18um technology. The LNA employed inductive source degeneration topology with on chip passive spiral inductor. Employing the body biasing technique with post distortion scheme not only achieve high linearity, but also minimizes the degradation of gain, noise figure and power consumption. The simulation results show that CMOS tech has the capability to achieve a 5.5 GHz LNA. The LNA draws a 10.8mw power on 1.8V power supply while achieve gain of 11.4dB IIP3 of 9.20dBm
