Book excerpt: Abstract: Since the first radio link was built by Hertz in 1886, antennas have become a critical technology which allows people to stay connected and informed. Several advances have been made in the field of antenna theory and technology in the past hundred twenty years. Among them is the characterization of frequency selective surfaces (FSS), which are periodic arrays of passive elements or slots that act as a band stop or a band pass filters respectively to propagating electromagnetic waves. The purpose of this project was to construct an antenna which is transmissive outside of the band of operation. For example, the antenna designed in this project operates in a band of 1-2 GHz. The goal of this project is to be able to place an antenna operating at 4-8 GHz behind this antenna and have it be able to "look though" the first antenna as if it wasn't there. This will allow the user to stack antennas one behind the other and thus increase the density of antennas in a given area. This is advantageous in applications where the available real estate upon which to place antennas is limited, such as on ships and submarines. This antenna has two main components - an array of radiating elements and a reflector. The radiating array will be transmissive at 4-8 GHz as long as it does not radiate energy at this frequency and does not significantly scatter energy. These constraints are easily met by creating an array of wire elements. Reflectors, on the other hand, are commonly composed of a solid metal plate, which will reflect energy at any frequency. However, this project uses an element FSS for a reflector. As a result this reflector will only reflect energy in the stop band. Sufficiently outside of this band, it will be transmissive. While an entire antenna was designed for sake of completeness, the focus of this project was the design and testing of the FSS reflector. There were two main components to this project. The first was to use computational codes to design the antenna. Specifically, the antenna was designed using a Method of Moments (MoM) code, which calculates gain patterns for finite antennas. These results were then compared to a periodic moment method code, which calculates the ideal result for an infinite structure. This design process was completed in several steps. First the FSS array was designed to be reflective in the L band (1-2 GHz) and transmissive outside of this band. Following this the radiating array was designed to realize sufficiently flat L band bandwidth. The FSS reflector and radiating array were then combined together and the gain and transmissivity were then calculated for the entire antenna. Finally a prototype of the FSS reflector was built and tested. Time constraints prevented the construction of the entire antenna. The results of these tests are in very good agreement with each other. MoM tests show the FSS is within 1 dB of perfect reflectivity over the entire L band range. The prototype was within 2 dB of perfect reflectivity over the same range. This deviation is explained by unavoidable human error in the construction of the FSS. The periodic moment method code is also computed similar results. The bandwidth wasn't quite as large in the PMM test, but this is expected and is explained by the fact that edge diffraction on finite structures increases the bandwidth. The transmissivity of this FSS is within 2 dB of perfect transmissivity in the C band (4-8 GHz.) Finally the gain of the radiating array has a 2 dB variation over L and, and the gain of the entire antenna has a 3 dB variation over L band.

This book presents the complete derivation of the Periodic Method of Moments, which enables the reader to calculate quickly and efficiently the transmission and reflection properties of multi-layered Frequency Selective Surfaces comprised of either wire and/or slot elements of arbitrary shape and located in a stratified medium. However, it also gives the reader the tools to analyze multi-layered FSS's leading to specific designs of the very important Hybrid Radome, which is characterized by constant band width with angle of incidence and polarization. Further, it investigates in great detail bandstop filters with large as well as narrow bandwidth (dichroic surfaces). It also discusses for the first time, lossy elements used in producing Circuit Analog absorbers. Finally, the last chapter deals with power breakdown of FSS's when exposed to pulsed signals with high peak power. The approach followed by most other presentations simply consists of expanding the fields around the FSS, matching the boundary conditions and writing a computer program. While this enables the user to obtain calculated results, it gives very little physical insight and no help in how to design actual multi-layered FSS's. In contrast, the approach used in this title analyzes all curves of desired shapes. In particular, it discusses in great detail how to produce radomes made of FSS's located in a stratified medium (Hybrid Radomes), with constant band width for all angles of incidence and polarizations. Numerous examples are given of great practical interest. More specifically, Chapter 7 deals with the theory and design of bandpass radomes with constant bandwidth and flat tops. Examples are given for mono-, bi- and tri-planar designs. Chapter 8 deals with bandstop filters with broad as well as narrow bandwidth. Chapter 9 deals with multi-layered FSS of lossy elements, namely the so-called Circuit Analog Absorbers, designed to yield outstanding absorption with more than a decade of bandwidth. An advanced tool has been developed at TNO for the analysis and design of multi-layer FSSs. In the frame of Phase I of the Multiband Frequency Selective Surface project defined within the ITM programme, the tool has been upgraded with new features that allow handling new complex geometries. The tool has been equipped with a triangular mesh and the electric and magnetic currents on the FSS elements have been discretised in terms of Rao Wilton Olisson functions. Moreover, the application of the bitmapping design technique requires considering completely metallised unit cells and therefore ensuring the continuity of the currents across adjacent cells. A further upgrade in this direction has been introduced in the tool. The new implementations have been tested against results available in the open literature and the obtained agreement is very good.

To compensate the overall loss in a wireless communication system, a high-gain antenna is required. Circularly polarized (CP) antennas are among preferred choices to design because they offer many advantages due to their good resistance to polarization mismatch, mitigation of multipath effects, and some phasing issues and immunity to Faraday rotation. On the other hand, frequency selective surface (FSS) technology is recently employed to enhance the performance of radiation and scattering properties of antennas used in different sectors such as aerospace, medical, and microwave industry. Therefore, it is appropriate and attractive to propose the use of FSS technology to design practical and efficient CP antennas. CP Fabry-Perot cavity (FPC) antennas based on FSS are investigated in this thesis to fulfil the growing demand for broadband high-gain antennas with low radar cross section (RCS). The thesis investigates both characteristic improvement of CP antennas and RCS reduction issues employing FSS structures. Initially, a high gain CP dielectric resonator (DR) antenna is proposed. Using an FSS superstrate layer, a gain enhancement of 8.5 dB is achieved. A detailed theoretical analysis along with different models are presented and used to optimize the superstrate size and the air gap height between the antenna and superstrate layer. The second research theme focusses on developing an effective approach for mitigating the near-field coupling between four-port CP antennas in a Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. This is obtained by incorporating a two-layer transmission-type FSS superstrate based on planar crossed-dipole metal strips. Another technique for suppressing the spatially coupling between DR antennas using a new FSS polarization-rotator wall is studied as well. The coupling reduction is achieved by embedding an FSS wall between two DRAs, which are placed in the H-plane. Utilizing this FSS wall, the TE modes of the antennas become orthogonal, which reduces the spatially coupling between the two DRAs. The third research theme of this thesis is to enhance the purity and bandwidth of CP with the least amount of insertion loss by the use of an LP-to-CP-polarizer which is based on multilayer FSS slab. This polarizer is approximately robust under oblique illuminations. To have a high-gain CP antenna, an 8-element LP array antenna with Chebyshev tapered distribution is designed and integrated with the polarizer. Eventually, in order to enhance the scattering property, the fourth research theme investigates on RCS reduction by the use of two different approaches which are based on FSS. Initially, a wideband FSS metasurface for RCS reduction based on a polarization conversion is proposed. To distribute the scattered EM waves and suppress the maximum bistatic RCS of the metasurface over a broad band of incident angles at both polarizations, the elements are arranged using the binary coding matrix achieved by group search optimization (GSO) algorithm. The reflective two-layer metasurface is designed in such a way to generate reflection phase difference of 180° between two elements "0" and "1" on a broad frequency band. A theoretical analysis is performed on the ratio of the "0" and "1" elements using Least Square Error (LSE) method to find the best ratio value. As the second activity of this research theme, wideband CP antenna with low RCS and high gain properties is presented. The proposed antenna is based on a combination of the FPC and sequential feeding technique.

The radiation performances (directivity and gain) are discussed using array theory approach, and the impacts of element phase errors are demonstrated. The performance of transmitarray design using multilayer frequency selective surfaces (M-FSS) approach is carefully studied, and the transmission phase limit which are generally independent from the selection of a specific element shape is revealed. The maximum transmission phase range is determined based on the number of layers, substrate permittivity, and the separations between layers. In order to reduce the transmitarray design complexity and cost, three different methods have been investigated. As a result, one design is performed using quad-layer cross-slot elements with no dielectric material and another using triple-layer spiral dipole elements. Both designs were fabricated and tested at X-Band for deep space communications. Furthermore, the radiation pattern characteristics were studied under different feed polarization conditions and oblique angles of incident field from the feed. New design methodologies are proposed to improve the bandwidth of transmitarray antennas through the control of the transmission phase range of the elements. These design techniques are validated through the fabrication and testing of two quad-layer transmitarray antennas at Ku-band. A single-feed quad-beam transmitarray antenna with 50 degrees elevation separation between the beams is investigated, designed, fabricated, and tested at Ku-band. In summary, various challenges in the analysis and design of transmitarray antennas are addressed in this book. New methodologies to improve the bandwidth of transmitarray antennas have been demonstrated. Several prototypes have been fabricated and tested, demonstrating the desirable features and potential new applications of transmitarray antennas.

The most proposed UWB antennas have omnidirectional radiation, which provides the wide coverage area that is highly demanded by many conventional UWB applications. However, directional radiation is more beneficial for other UWB applications and it may even be beneficial for the conventional UWB omnidirectional applications in some environments that contain many sources of interference and distorting objects, where the omnidirectional radiation leads to high interference and loss of power in undesirable directions. Consequently, an immense research has addressed the issue of realizing UWB planar antennas with unidirectional radiation characteristics. Basically, the main technique used to create unidirectional radiation patterns is employing cavity-baking reflectors to redirect the back radiation, hence increasing the gain of the radiators. In addition, these reflectors can decouple the mounted radiator from the surroundings that can damage its characteristics. Therefore, we suggest the employment of UWB reflectors to achieve UWB planar antennas with directional radiation. Our research for designing optimal UWB reflectors has led to the investigation in the field of frequency selective surfaces (FSSs), which are valuable structures and can be of great interest to a wide range of applications especially UWB applications. Subsequently, the main aim of this chapter is to give a review of the fundamental uses of FSSs in antenna engineering and the basic physical concepts that have been employed to serve the purpose of enhancing antennas,Äô performances using FSSs with a variety of features and characteristics. Furthermore, it is geared toward the presentation of our proposed UWB FSS-based antennas. First, we use basic FSSs such as the capacitive and its complementary inductive FSSs to design UWB reflectors that can serve improving and stabilizing the gain of UWB antennas. Thereafter, a proposed UWB single-layer FSS is used to serve the same purpose. Then, the FSS is integrated and designed together with UWB radiator, which resulted in lower profile along with good performance.

Methods of increasing FSS bandwidth include, among others, decreasing inter-element spacing and increasing the thickness of the supporting dielectric layer. The shape of the FSS element also determines its bandwidth. To achieve any desired bandwidth, a combination of these methods is often required. The present work focuses on designing an FSS element where shape alone is the most important feature in determining its bandwidth. The elements are a combination of two known FSS elements with close resonant frequencies but not located in the same frequency band. The FSS's are designed to act as reflectors. The second part of this paper discusses frequency stabilization techniques, focusing on rectangular arrays of tripoles and cross dipoles. These elements have poor frequency stability with angle of incidence for parallel polarization. Dielectric loading and skewed arrays help minimize the problem. In the present work, a new method based on varying the element's impedance by partially removing the conducting patch at the center of the element is introduced.
