This experimental system dehumidifies ambient air in a packed bed utilizing an aqueous solution of lithium bromide. The absorbent solution is distributed by spray nozzles and flows countercurrent to the air. The dilute solution exiting the dehumidifier is concentrated in a packed bed regenerator by solar heated air. The strong solution is cooled by two heat exchangers before reentering the dehumidifier. Provisions to simulate conditions of high ambient humidity and temperature have been made.

The system comprises the dehumidifier and the regenerator. The lithium bromide desiccant solution dehumidifies the air stream during a counter-currnet, liquid-gas contacting in the packed tower. The regenerator concentrates the lithium bromide solution during a similar gas-liquid contacting using solar heated air with the only difference being that the direction of heat and mass transfer are reversed in this unit. An optimization scheme to predict operating conditions suited for best performance of the two units, for varying ambient temperature and humidity to the dehumidifier, has been devised.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, Eastern Mediterranean University, language: English, abstract: The increase of occupant comfort demands are leading to rising requirement for air conditioning, but deteriorating global energy and environment crisis are starving for energy saving and environmental protection. The need to come up with the new energy saving as well as environmental friendly air conditioning systems has been more urgent than ever before. In hot and humid areas, the liquid desiccant air-conditioning systems based on evaporative cooling was proposed as a promising invention. This system overcomes the difficulty of evaporative cooler increased humidity with cooling, which makes it unsuitable for hot and humid climates, by dehumidifying the air first and then cooling it inside an evaporative cooler with water. The heating effect of dehumidification process is compensated by cooling water circulation. The use of dehumidifier in conjunction with an evaporative cooler increases the efficiency of the system. Some of the advantages of using this system are: it can remove the air latent load, environmental friendly, removes the pollutants from the process air and reduces the amount of the electrical energy consumed. The primary objective of this project is to design a solar based liquid desiccant evaporative system to purify and supply cool air. Liquid desiccant dehumidification has been proven to be an effective method to extract the moisture of air with relatively less energy consumption, especially compared with conventional vapor compression system. Inside the dehumidifier we used calcium chloride solution which after some period of time gets diluted with water and loses its moisture absorbing capacity and therefore, needs to be heated in the solar collector to ensure that the liquid desiccant does not lose its absorption capacity. In this project, several different aspects in solar assisted liquid desiccant based evaporative cooler have been considered. Some of these aspects include the availability of the materials, manufacturability of the product, sustainability of the product, health and safety regulations and the environmental effects of the product.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Solar Heating and Cooling presents new information on the growing concerns about climate change, the security of energy supplies, and the ongoing interest in replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. The amount of energy used for heating and cooling is very significant, estimated, for example, as half of final energy consumption in Europe. Solar thermal installations have the potential to meet a large proportion of the heating and cooling needs of both buildings and industry and the number of solar thermal installations is increasing rapidly. This book provides an authoritative review of the latest research in solar heating and cooling technologies and applications. Provides researchers in academia and industry with an authoritative overview of heating and cooling for buildings and industry in one convenient volume Part III, ‘Solar cooling technologies’ is contributed by authors from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which is a world-leader in this area Covers advanced applications from zero-energy buildings, through industrial process heat to district heating and cooling

Book excerpt: A design for a closed, diurnal, intermittent absorption chiller for passive solar air-conditioning using liquid sorbents has been constructed and tested. LiBr-H/sub 2/O will not work with this design because of its low vapor pressure at the temperature available. The approach has possibilities using the 2 LiBr-ZrBr-CH/sub 3/OH or H/sub 2/O-NH/sub 3/ sorbent refrigerant pairs. The use of H/sub 2/O-NH/sub 3/ appears to be the better candidate because of the lower solution viscosity and less cycle weight, through tank volumes and collector requirements are similar. Further study of other refrigerant pairs such as S-Thiocyanate-ammonia is indicated, however, the difficulties encountered in construction and low potential coefficient of performance, and thus large collection area needed, makes commercialization of such a system doubtful in the foreseeable future.

Book excerpt: The Direct Evaporative Closed Air Loop (DECAL) system is a novel high efficiency liquid desiccant air-conditioning (LDAC) system which runs primarily on thermal energy rather than electricity. It is designed for residential cooling in hot and humid climates where demand is growing rapidly and incumbent direct-expansion system performance is poor. Unlike other LDAC systems, DECAL is modular. This allows the indoor hardware to remain small and non-intrusive, and offers increased flexibility to install the system in existing building stock without costly changes to the structure. This work lays out the basic operating cycle of the DECAL system and shows its thermodynamic merits in terms of ideal system performance against other LDAC systems. Design studies show DECAL offers improved thermal efficiency, especially in humid climates. The ideal thermal coefficient of performance (COP[subscript th]) is 1.24 at the design point ambient condition of 35C, 60% RH. A mathematical model is built to better characterize performance and optimize the system design. With transport inefficiencies included, the optimal system electrical and thermal COP (COP[subscript e] and COP[subscript th]) are 46.3 and 0.759 respectively for a LiCl system at the design point. These results show the DECAL system could reduce electrical consumption by over 85% from present day best-in-class systems using low-grade thermal energy. A benchtop scaled test of the closed air loop is constructed to validate the model. Experimental test results agree well with the model predictions for evaporative cooling effectiveness and sensible heat exchange, as well as pressure drop. The drying effect of the LAMEE is lower than anticipated. This is likely due to crystallization of liquid desiccant in the pores of the membrane, resulting in a high vapor diffusion resistance. Adjusting for this effect, full system test measurements match the system model well. The benchtop rig testing verified that the closed air loop is capable of generating a sensible cooling effect, but further testing is required to demonstrate modelled figures of merit are achievable.
