Book excerpt: The threat of global climate change is highly concerning as societies continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels to fulfill the world's energy needs. It is pertinent to look to alternative energy sources to meet the increasing global energy requirements. Solar energy may be a viable option to meet electricity demands and is an area of research worth pursuing. Titanium dioxide-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) provide a promising alternative to high cost silicon-based solar cells. In order to achieve cost/efficiency ratios in DSSCs necessary for them to compete with fossil fuels we set out to explore the use of first row transition metal-based chromophores. A series of iron(II) terpyridyl complexes have been designed to gain a better understanding of the ultrafast dynamics of potential chromophores in DSSCs. Iron(II) polypyridyl complexes inherently have short-lived charge transfer excited states. New terpyridyl ligands have been prepared, in which steric hinderance has been introduced to impose strain along a torsional coordinate in the iron(II) adducts for the analysis of a proposed relaxation pathway of the charge-transfer excited state. Details on the development of the synthesis of these compounds are presented along with full characterization of the ligands and iron(II) adducts. The fundamental understanding that we hope to gain from the forthcoming analysis of these complexes is pertinent toward the development of iron(II) based sensitizers in DSSCs.

Abstract: A series of alkynylplatinum(II) polypyridine complexes with 4,4′,4′′-tricarboxy-2,2′ 6′,2′′-terpyridine and 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine as TiO2 anchoring functionalities, has been successfully synthesized. Their photophysical, electrochemical and luminescence properties have been extensively studied. The excited state properties were probed using nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. [Pt(tctpy)(C≡C-Th-BTD-Th)][NnBu4]2 displayed a long-lived transient signal which was tentatively assigned to result from the formation of a charge-separated state, which could be alternatively described as a [Pt(tctpy) (C≡C-Th-BTD-Th)]?] state, with the charge recombination rate constant determined to be 2.9 105 s?1. The excited state redox potentials for the oxidation process were determined and the data confirmed the ability of the complexes to inject an electron into the conduction band of TiO2. The majority of the complexes were found to sensitize the nanocrystalline TiO2 and exhibit photovoltaic properties, which have been characterized by current-voltage measurements under illumination of air mass (AM) 1.5G sunlight (100 mW cm-2). A new class of molecular dyads comprising metalloporphyrin-linked alkynylplatinum(II) polypyridine complexes was synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical, electrochemical and luminescence properties have been studied in detail. The excited state properties were probed using nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy which indicated the formation of a charge-separated state involving the porphyrin radical anion, [Por -(C≡C)Pt]?]. The excited state redox potentials for the oxidation process were also determined with the data supporting the capability of the complexes to inject an electron into the conduction band of TiO2. The majority of the complexes were found to sensitize the nanocrystalline TiO2 and exhibit photovoltaic properties, as characterized by current-voltage measurements under illumination of air mass (AM) 1.5G sunlight (100 mW cm-2). A series of organic materials consisting of a triphenylamine-based donor with oligothiophene or oligothienylenevinylene based-conjugated linker and dicyanovinyl, tricyanovinyl or cyanacrylic acid groups as acceptor, was synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical, electrochemical, thermal and luminescence properties were studied. Transient absorption spectra of TPA-OTV-DCN in dichloromethane solution on the pico- to nanosecond timescale were recorded after femtosecond laser excitation at 400 nm. A transient signal at ca. 700 nm was tentatively assigned to result from the formation of a charge-separated [(TPA-OTV)] DCN ] state with the charge recombination rate constant determined to be 5.3 109 s?1. The energy levels of the LUMOs of TPA-OTV1-DCN, TPA-OTV2-DCN, TPA-OTV3-DCN TPA-TAZ1-DCN, TPA-TAZ2-DCN and TPA-o-4Th-DCN were calculated to be of ca. ?3.9 eV, establishing the formation of a downhill driving force for the energetically favorable electron transfer process involvi

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN AND SYNTHESIS OF LUMINESCENT MONO- AND DINUCLEAR PLATINUM(II) ALKYNYL TERPYRIDINE COMPLEXES - FROM PHOTOPHYSICS TO AGGREGATION AND SELF-ASSEMBLY submitted by CHAN Hoi Yiu for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 A series of mononuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridyl complexes, [Pt(trpy)({C{ C} C H )]PF, [Pt(trpy)({C{ C} C H CF -4)]PF, n 6 5 6 n 6 4 3 6 [Pt(trpy)({C{ C} C H CH -4)]PF, and [Pt( Bu trpy)(C{ C C{ C C H )]PF (n = n 6 4 3 6 3 6 5 6 2, 3), have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of the two forms of [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C{ C C H )]PF, [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C{ C C{ C C H CH -4)]PF and 6 5 6 6 4 3 6 [Pt( Bu trpy)(C{ C C{ C C H )]PF have been determined. Dinuclear and 3 6 5 6 trinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridyl complexes, [1,4- {Pt(trpy)C{ C} C H ](OTf), [1,4-{Pt( Bu trpy)C{ C} C H ](OTf), [2,5- 2 6 4 2 3 2 6 4 2 {Pt(trpy)C{ C} C H S](OTf), [2,5-{Pt( Bu trpy)C{ C} C H S](OTf) and [1,3,5- 2 4 2 2 3 2 4 2 2 {Pt( Bu trpy)C{ C} C H ](OTf) have been successfully synthesized. The X-ray 3 3 6 3 3t crystal structure of [1,4-{Pt( Bu trpy)C{ C} C H ](OTf) has also been 3 2 6 4 2 determined. The luminescence properties of these complexes have been studied and their lowest-lying excited states in fluid solution and in the glass state were tentatively assigned as admixture of MLCT [dS (Pt)ĺ S *(trpy)] and LLCT [S (C{ C)ĺ S *(trpy)] origin, whereas the low-energy emissions in the solid state were attributed to triplet metal metal-to-ligand charge transfer ( MMLCT) phosphorescence, resulting from significant Pt---Pt interactions in the solid state. Besides, a series of luminescent platinum(II) terpyridyl alkynyl complexes with different counter anions, [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C{ C H)]X (X = OTf, PF, ClO, 6 4 BF, BPh ), [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C H )]X (X = OTf, PF, ClO, BF ) and 4 4 6 5 6 4 4 complexes with various substituents on the alkynyl and terpyridyl ligands, [Pt(trpy)(C{ CC H OCH-4)]OTf, [Pt(4'-CH O trpy)(C{ C C H )]OTf, 6 4 3 3 6 5 [Pt( Bu trpy)(C{ C C{ CH)]OTf, [Pt(trpy)(C{ CC H {CH NMe }-4)](OTf), 3 6 4 2 3 2 [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C{ C CH NMe )](OTf) and [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C{ C CH OH)]OTf 2 3 2 2 have been synthesized and their photophysical properties have been stuided. The X-ray crystal structure of [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C H )]ClO and 6 5 4 [Pt( Bu trpy)(C{ C C{ C H)]OTf have been determined. The solid-state absorption and emission spectra showed low-energy bands, which were assigned as derived from MMLCT origin. Solvent-induced aggregation studies of these complexes in solution showed that the color of the aggregates could be very different for different counter-ions, indicating that counter-ions played an important role in governing the degree of aggregation and the extent of interactions within these aggregates. Addition of various anions to solutions of [Pt(trpy)(C{ C C{ C H)]X (X = OTf, PF ) produced anion-induced color 6changes upon solvent-induced aggregation, showing that these complexes might serve as potential colorimetric anion probes. The effect of temperature on the aggregation properties of the complexes has also been explored. New low-energy absorption and emission bands were found upon a reduction of temperature, attributable to the formation o

Book excerpt: The thesis provides the necessary experimental and analytical tools to unambiguously observe the atomically resolved chemical reactions. A great challenge of modern science has been to directly observe atomic motions during structural transitions, and while this was first achieved through a major advance in electron source brightness, the information content was still limited and new methods for image reconstruction using femtosecond electron diffraction methods were needed. One particular challenge lay in reconciling the innumerable possible nuclear configurations with the observation of chemical reaction mechanisms that reproducibly give the same kind of chemistry for large classes of molecules. The author shows that there is a simple solution that occurs during barrier crossing in which the highly anharmonic potential at that point in nuclear rearrangements couples high- and low-frequency vibrational modes to give highly localized nuclear motions, reducing hundreds of potential degrees of freedom to just a few key modes. Specific examples are given in this thesis, including two photoinduced phase transitions in an organic system, a ring closure reaction, and two direct observations of nuclear reorganization driven by spin transitions. The emerging field of structural dynamics promises to change the way we think about the physics of chemistry and this thesis provides tools to make it happen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the synthesis, electrochemical and photochemical properties, and device applications of metallo-supramolecular polymers, new kinds of polymers synthesized by the complexation of metal ions and organic ditopic ligands. Their electrochemical and photochemical properties are also interesting and much different from conventional organic polymers. The properties come from the electronic intra-chain interaction between the metal ions and the ligands in the polymer chain. In this book, for example, the electrochromism that the Fe(II)-based metallo-supramolecular polymer exhibits is described: the blue color of the polymer film disappears by the electrochemical oxidation of Fe(II) ions to Fe(III) and the colorless film becomes blue again by the electrochemical reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). The electrochromism is explained by the disappearance/appearance of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption. The electrochromic properties are applicable to display devices such as electronic paper and smart windows.
