Book Synopsis Biological Concepts for Design and Operation of the Activated Sludge Process by : Anthony F. Gaudy
Download or read book Biological Concepts for Design and Operation of the Activated Sludge Process written by Anthony F. Gaudy and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, research has been conducted to produce a general body of conceptual principles applicable to design and operation of activated sludge processes. The aid of the report is to present these biological concepts in terms readily understood by engineering professionals. Generalized concepts of BOD exertion, the use of the measure of biologically available organic matter in a waste sample as a design and operational tool, the stoichiometry and mass balance concepts of treatment, and kinetic equations for microbial growth are presented. Design models are discussed, and a model for completely mixed reactors holding recycle solids, X(R), constant is recommended. Some guidelines for accommodation of various types of shock loadings are included. Concepts of oxidative assimilation and the multiple effects of solids concentration, nitrogen concentration, and detention time are related; a new activated sludge process (continuous oxidative assimilation) for nitrogen-deficient wastes is presented. Data supporting the concept of total oxidation are presented. Some possible flow diagrams for complete aerobic treatment (purification and sludge disposal) of metabolizable organic wastes are presented.
Book Synopsis Dynamics and Control of Wastewater Systems, Second Edition by : Michae Barnett
Download or read book Dynamics and Control of Wastewater Systems, Second Edition written by Michae Barnett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-07-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE Dynamic modeling, computer simulation, and modern control systems are valuable tools for use in both the design and operation of dynamic systems. From the "tools" point of view, this book is designed to show practicing engineers how to develop models capable of describing dynamic behavior and how to "solve" these models using computer simulation. The basic principles of process control are also presented so that the effects of different control systems on dynamic behavior can be established by computer simulation.
Book Synopsis Activated Sludge Modelling - Processes in Theory and Practice by : M. Henze
Download or read book Activated Sludge Modelling - Processes in Theory and Practice written by M. Henze and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of models in activated sludge design and operation is increasing, with a similar trend seen in education. Starting with the original IAWPRC Activated Sludge Model no 1 (ASM1) and the subsequent ASM2 and ASM2D, the first generation of activated sludge models have played an important role in practice. With the development of the latest IWA Activated Sludge Model no 3 further progress has been made, and given the concurrent development of new methods for characterization of biomass and wastewater, this is a field of vigorous activity at present. The fifth Kollekolle Seminar brought together many of the world's leading experts on the activated sludge process, who have been working with activated sludge models in practice and research. The aim, as with previous seminars was to present the latest research findings, putting them into the proper perspective. From this high-quality programme 22 papers have been selected and revised to provide the best collection of papers on the state of the art of activated sludge modeling. Papers cover the following topics: modeling developments; wastewater and biomass characterization and parameter identification; modeling in practices.

Book Synopsis Activated Sludge by : Wesley Eckenfelder
Download or read book Activated Sludge written by Wesley Eckenfelder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-03-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, industrial wastewater treatment primarily focused on the removal of BOD and suspended solids. In recent years, however, the focus has changed to aquatic toxicity, priority pollutants, and volatile organics. This required changes in how we design and operate biological treatment plants. Many existing plants must be retrofitted. New approaches to meet new requirements are discussed in detail. The authors, with a combined experience of sixty years, have presented case studies for a wide variety of industrial wastewaters including pulp and paper, food processing, chemical and pharmaceuticals, and textile wastewaters. Data interpretation and process design are developed through the use of seventeen examples. Procedures for the laboratory and pilot plant generation of process design data are presented. Emphasis is placed on meeting the many new regulations governing industrial wastewater discharges.
