Experiments with vortex generator jets (VGJs), conducted in AFRL's low-speed cascade at Wright-Patterson AFB, have demonstrated dramatic reductions in separation losses. Before flow control can become an integral part of LPT design, research must be conducted in more realistic engine conditions. This can best be accomplished through a combined experimental and computational program that uses both tools in a complementary fashion. Such a program was initiated at BYU in 2007 to better understand the basic physics of the separation control phenomenon and establish the quantitative links between the underlying flow physics and LPT performance under a variety of conditions. A new, high performance LPT blade design (L1A) was received from AFRL. CFD was used to design a new 3-passage cascade facility with the L1A blade. The new cascade was completed at Ohio State University under a subcontract agreement between BYU and OSU since the PI moved to OSU in July 2007. CFD was also used to determine the appropriate diameter and location for an upstream wake generator. The wake generator was used to assess the impact of upstream wakes on the implementation of pulsed VGJ flow control for the Pack B baseline LPT design. The convecting wakes have a first order influence on the LPT flow field.

Among these energies, wind energy is very interesting. Wind energy is the subject of advanced research. In the development of wind turbine, the design of its different structures is very important. It will ensure: the robustness of the system, the energy efficiency, the optimal cost and the high reliability. The use of advanced control technology and new technology products allows bringing the wind energy conversion system in its optimal operating mode. Different strategies of control can be applied on generators, systems relating to blades, etc. in order to extract maximal power from the wind. The goal of this book is to present recent works on design, control and applications in wind energy conversion systems.

Book excerpt: The following work summarizes the development of shape-adaptive airfoil profiles for wind turbine application. The underlying motivation of this work is the potential cost effectiveness of wind power conversion through the introduction of shape-adaptive airfoils in future wind turbine blades. The employment of shape adaption system in the wind turbine blade geometry would facilitate a more efficient power harvesting for the next generation of smart wind turbines. In the scope of this work, the concepts of the dedicated shape-adaptive airfoil profiles for wind turbine application are investigated in light of their aerodynamic performances. The concepts of the actuation system are developed while taking pre-defined design boundary conditions suitable for wind turbine application into consideration. A novel numerical approach is developed towards the simulation of fluid-structure interaction for prototype shape-adaptive airfoils. The numerical scheme is employed in designing the shape-adaptive blade prototypes. Effort has been given to develop a unique actuator system for wind turbine application. In a next step, experimental investigations are carried out to quantize the aerodynamic flow-field around the shape-adaptive airfoils. Parallelly, experimental investigations are carried out on a rigid NACA 0012 airfoil to log its performance at different stagger angles. In a further step, numerical investigations are carried out on the different airfoil configurations. Finally, performance analyses of the airfoils are carried out. The shape-adaptive airfoils outperform the rigid NACA 0012 airfoil for the desired performance envelope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active flow control has demonstrated promising advantages in addressing problems associated with dynamic stall in large wind turbine blades. The feasibility of employing Gurney flaps for active flow control of a pitching flatback airfoil has been assessed in this study. The effectiveness of the Gurney flap in different steady and unsteady inflow conditions from attached-flow to deep dynamic stall condition were characterized by acquiring surface pressure measurements and Particle Image Velocimetry data. The results indicate that the Gurney flap has significant authority in changing the aerodynamics that can affect the aeroelastic behavior of the pitching system used in this work. The fast transient aerodynamics of the airfoil during Gurney flap deployment is also considered as a necessary requirement for an effective closed-loop control scheme. The results show great potential in using the Gurney flap as an effective and fast responding flow control device that can regulate blade loading in a broad range of inflow conditions.

A basic knowledge of thermodynamics and turbomachinery is a prerequisite for understanding the concepts and ideas described. The book is also intended for teachers as a source of information for lecture materials and exercises for their students. It is extensively illustrated with examples and data from real engine cycles, all of which can be reproduced with GasTurb (TM). It discusses the practical application of thermodynamic, aerodynamic and mechanical principles. The authors describe the theoretical background of the simulation elements and the relevant correlations through which they are applied, however they refrain from detailed scientific derivations.

Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.
