Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important uses of computers is (as an aid to managers) to provide up-to-date information to efficiently run their organizations. Of the total number of computers installed in the world today, over eighty percent are used in organizations for management information systems. It is thus very important for all students of management, commerce and computer science to know how to design computer-based information systems to aid management. This introductory text gives a lucid, self-contained presentation to students on how to analyse and design information systems for use by managers. Information Systems Analysis and Design (also known as System Analysis and Design) is a compulsory subject for MCA, BCA, B.Com. and B.E. students of Computer Science and Information Technology. This book covers the syllabus of this course and that of the DOEACC (Level A) examination. Thoroughly classroom tested and evolved out of twenty years of teaching Information Systems Design course at IIT Kanpur and IISc., Bangalore, this book presents real Indian examples. In this third edition every chapter has been updated, besides the addition of a new chapter on Use Case Method to reflect the rapid changes taking place in designing information systems. This book has been used to prepare learning material for the course Systems Analysis and Design for the National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The author has delivered 40 lectures on this topic which are available on YouTube. Besides, the book also contains supplementary materials such as PPTs and objective questions which are available on www.phindia.com/rajaraman_ADIS. KEY FEATURES: Covers comprehensively systems analysis and design. Discusses object-oriented modelling of information systems. A chapter on Electronic Commerce is unique to this book. Presents a detailed case study of a complete information system. Includes supplementary web material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a practical guide to the design and implementation of health information systems in developing countries. Noting that most existing systems fail to deliver timely, reliable, and relevant information, the book responds to the urgent need to restructure systems and make them work as both a resource for routine decisions and a powerful tool for improving health services. With this need in mind, the authors draw on their extensive personal experiences to map out strategies, pinpoint common pitfalls, and guide readers through a host of conceptual and technical options. Information needs at all levels - from patient care to management of the national health system - are considered in this comprehensive guide. Recommended lines of action are specific to conditions seen in government-managed health systems in the developing world. In view of common constraints on time and resources, the book concentrates on strategies that do not require large resources, highly trained staff, or complex equipment. Throughout the book, case studies and numerous practical examples are used to explore problems and illustrate solutions. Details range from a list of weaknesses that plague most existing systems, through advice on when to introduce computers and how to choose appropriate software and hardware, to the hotly debated question of whether patient records should be kept by the patient or filed at the health unit. The book has fourteen chapters presented in four parts. Chapters in the first part, on information for decision-making, explain the potential role of health information as a managerial tool, consider the reasons why this potential is rarely realized, and propose general approaches for reform which have proved successful in several developing countries. Presentation of a six-step procedure for restructuring information systems, closely linked to an organizational model of health services, is followed by a practical discussion of the decision-making process. Reasons for the failure of most health information to influence decisions are also critically assessed. Against this background, the second and most extensive part provides a step-by-step guide to the restructuring of information systems aimed at improving the quality and relevance of data and ensuring their better use in planning and management. Steps covered include the identification of information needs and indicators, assessment of the existing system, and the collection of both routine and non-routine data using recommended procedures and instruments. Chapters also offer advice on procedures for data transmission and processing, and discuss the requirements of systems designed to collect population-based community information. Resource needs and technical tools are addressed in part three. A comprehensive overview of the resource base - from staff and training to the purchase and maintenance of equipment - is followed by chapters offering advice on the introduction of computerized systems in developing countries, and explaining the many applications of geographic information systems. Practical advice on how to restructure a health information system is provided in the final part, which considers how different interest groups can influence the design and implementation of a new system, and proposes various design options for overcoming specific problems. Experiences from several developing countries are used to illustrate strategies and designs in terms of those almost certain to fail and those that have the greatest chances of success

IT can drive the change in global business strategies and improve international coordination. At the same time, IT can be an impediment to achieving globalization. IT as an enabler of and inhibitor to globalization raises interesting questions. Global Perspective of Information Technology Management provides a collection of research works that address relevant IT management issues from a global perspective. As the world economy becomes more interdependent and competition for business continues to be more globally oriented, it has, likewise, become necessary to address the issues of IT management from a broader global focus.

Book excerpt: Developing Web Information Systems brings together traditional system development methods that have been taught for many years on information systems and computer science courses with web/e-commerce development. It is the first book to bring together IS development and the web applications in a thorough and systematic way. There is a running case study that illustrates web IS development from start to finish. The case is easy to understand (a theatre) and results in a working web application. Most, if not all, analysis and design texts fall short of making that step into software. The book draws heavily on practical experiences of web-based IS development resulting from commercial system development, so as well as appealing to students and academics, it will also interest practitioners. The coverage of data management and e-business strategy gives the book the broader scope essential for understanding IS development properly in an Internet context. First book to bring together IS development and web applications thoroughly and systematically Covers full development process from strategy, through analysis and design, to working software Interactive case study which can be accessed on author's website

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many professionals and students in engineering, science, business, and other application fields need to develop Windows-based and web-enabled information systems to store and use data for decision support, without help from professional programmers. However, few books are available to train professionals and students who are not professional programmers to develop these information systems. Developing Windows-Based and Web-Enabled Information Systems fills this gap, providing a self-contained, easy-to-understand, and well-illustrated text that explores current concepts, methods, and software tools for developing Windows-based and web-enabled information systems. Written in an easily accessible style, the book details current concepts, methods, and software tools for Windows-based and web-enabled information systems that store and use data. It is self-contained with easy-to-understand small examples to walk through concepts and implementation details along with large-scale case studies. The book describes data modeling methods including entity–relationship modeling, relational modeling and normalization, and object-oriented data modeling, to develop data models of a database. The author covers how to use software tools in the Microsoft application development environment, including Microsoft Access, MySQL, SQL, Visual Studio, Visual Basic, VBA, HTML, and XML, to implement databases and develop Windows-based and web-enabled applications with the database, graphical user interface, and program components. The book takes you through the entire process of developing a computer and network application for an information system, highlighting concepts and operation details. In each chapter, small data examples are used to manually walk through concepts and operational details. These features and more give you the conceptual understanding and practical skill required, even if you don’t have a computer science background, to develop Windows-based or web-enabled applications for your specialized information system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The data-processing environment is changing rapidly, which increases the challenge to remain up to date. Many organizations have data-processing problems because they concentrate on technical details rather than system analysis and design. The pressure to implement a new application quickly, with an emphasis on programming. Requirements definitions, system analysis, and system design are often done hurriedly--or not at all. Organizations which invest in defining what is needed, and building a prototype of the system so users can experiment with it before it is finalized are more successful in meeting their goals. This book is focused on these latter aspects as the most important elements of system design.
