Book excerpt: Miniaturization of imaging systems shows nowadays a strong potential for many applications, in particular, e. g., for novel biomedical devices. Related imaging specifications require a substantial effort onto the development of high quality microoptical components. better control of light propagation and features in such system sis also of particular interest. Components should then e.g. contain optical aberrations in order to reach high resolutions. In purpose of searching higher diffraction efficiencies or resolutions, optical components with well-controlled continuous phase profiles are sought. In addition, they also should be made of robust materials to handle their further assembly into miniaturized devices. Consequently, the manuscript focuses on the design and the parallel fabrication of such microoptical components made of glass. To that end, two technologies have been studied and optimized, namely gray-scale lithography and glass-blowing processes. As an example, glass-based microaxicons have been fabricated and Bessel beams generation has been demonstrated. This type of beam exhibits a long non-diffractive propagation distance along the optical axis followed by a dark hollow shape which makes them useful in many different applications. This work has been supported by the SMYLE (Smart Systems for a Better Life) European project and the Ranche-Comté Regional Council.

Book excerpt: The main focus of this dissertation is to seek scientific and fundamental knowledge of nonconventional optical components including its optical design, ultraprecision prototyping, precision molds making, transition into industrial production and efficient evaluation. A nonconventional component in this dissertation is loosely defined as an optical component either that is not symmetric around its optical axis or that is aspherical surface with three or higher order coefficient. Nonconventional optics have broadened the vision of optical designers and enhanced the design flexibility and thus are becoming increasingly important as a core next-generation optical component. These optical components have gradually been implemented to replace conventional spherical and aspherical counterparts in the fields of imaging (Plummer, 1982), illumination (Fournier & Rolland, 2008), aviation (Spano, 2008) , and energy (Zamora, et al., 2009) where freeform optics have demonstrated excellent optical performance and high degree of system integration. However, design, fabrication and metrology of nonconventional optics have not been developed at the same pace. Due to the complex nature of nonconventional optics manufacturing processes, the production efficiency and finished quality of nonconventional optical components are difficult to be improved. To validate optical performance, in this dissertation ultraprecision diamond tooling is applied to prototype the optical design, which is capable of generating precision optical features both on polymer blank and metal mold without post grinding and polishing process. In addition, the prototyping process also paves the way to mold fabrication. To produce low cost high volume high quality nonconventional optical components, precision compression/microinjection molding has been combined with ultraprecision diamond machining and cleanroom manufacturing respectively for different size scale and application. Once the low cost molded nonconventional optical components and assembly are fabricated, their optical performance needs to be characterized to ensure quality in industrial production. The geometric feature and principle optical parameter, such as focal length, are two important aspects that influence the final optical performance considerably. In order to solve the major problems in manufacturing affordable high quality nonconventional optical components, this dissertation will include several key steps: 1) Investigate nonconventional optics design that could be functionally and economically applied in various optical components or systems to further improve their performance; 2) Validate and evaluate nonconventional optics design by ultraprecision prototyping; 3) Develop the precision molds manufacturing process and the corresponding molding process both for miniaturized lens profile and micro scale diffraction structure; 4) Investigate the products quality by crucial optical parameters measurement and surface profiling. Overall, this dissertation describes a comprehensive understanding of low cost high volume nonconventional optics manufacturing.

Continuous-relief microstructures of refractive, reflective and hybrid characteristics are obtained by vapor deposition technologies with shadow masks in rotating systems. The book gives a comprehensive overview on fundamental laws of microoptics, types of thin-film microoptical components, methods and constraints of their design, fabrication and characterization, structure transfer into substrates, optical functions and applications. Recent theoretical and experimental results of basic and applied research are addressed. Particular emphasis will be laid on the generation of localized, nondiffracting few-cycle wavepackets of extended depth of focus and high tolerance against distortions. It is shown that the spectral interference of ultrabroadband conical beams results in spatio-temporal structures of characteristic X-shape, so-called X-waves, which are interesting for robust optical communication. New prospects are opened by exploiting small conical angles from nanolayer microoptics and self-apodized truncation of Bessel beams leading to the formation of single-maximum nondiffracting beams or "needle beams". This thesis focuses on the development and application of simpler methods for successful lens design for standard and miniaturized imaging systems. The impact of manufacturing tolerances of an optical system is considered, analyzed, and tested. A study of various design approaches using optical design software is presented. The design approaches introduced focus on the as-built performance of the lens, and their results are compared to determine the most effective design approach. The results of the different design approaches considered were then applied to the design of a mobile phone camera. The topics of tolerancing and miniaturized lens design are considered together during the design process for a cellphone camera. The performance, manufacturability, and design process of the cellphone camera are also presented, along with suggestions on possible improvement for future work. The as-built performance of the final design compared to the initial design resulted in a 2.5 times improvement in performance for the same percent-yield.

The device is the core component of an infrared gas spectrometer.

Book excerpt: Optical MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) is an enabling technology that realizes miniaturized optical systems with high functionality and excellent performance. In this dissertation, two novel miniaturized optical systems are presented for applications in optical communication and biomedical imaging. In Part I, a multi-functional MEMS tunable optical filter are described, which is a key element for dynamic wavelength provisioning in reconfigurable optical networks and communication systems. This filter is built based on MEMS platform technology that allows large vertical mirrors (311 [mu]m × 450 [mu]m × 40 [mu]m) to be micro-assembled on actuated platforms to enable compact tunable optical filters with large apertures and high-quality optical mirrors with very low scattering losses. Besides, electrostatic combdrive actuators connected to the MEMS platforms provide independent and continuous control of the center wavelength and the optical bandwidth. The filter has been tested by integrating it in a 10Gb/s communication system. The performance of the MEMS tunable filter is demonstrated for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) rejection and wavelength selection. In PART II, a 3-D MEMS scanning system utilizing 2-D lateral and 1-D vertical MEMS scanners is introduced for use in miniature in vivo dual-axis confocal (DAC) microendoscopes, which is an emerging biomedical-imaging technology with high resolution, good tissue penetration, large field of view, and ability to provide both reflectance and fluorescence contrast images. Both MEMS scanners are fabricated exclusively by front-side processing to enable compact and robust structures that facilitate handling and packaging for miniaturized optical instrumentation. Co-operation of a 2-D lateral scanner and a 1-D vertical scanner enables fast 3-D microscopy over a volume that measures 340[mu]m by 236[mu]m by 286[mu]m. This part describes the principle of the all-MEMS-based 3-D scanning DAC microscopy that gives the functionality of OCT (real-time vertical cross-section imaging) to a confocal microscope.
