Book excerpt: Satellite-based passive microwave remote sensing is a valuable tool for global weather monitoring and prediction. This thesis presents the design and development of a low-cost airborne weather sensing instrument to independently validate a satellite-based sensor platform. The NPOESS Aircraft Sounder Testbed - K-band (NAST-K) is a passive microwave radiometer operating over approximately 200 MHz bandwidth centered at 23.8 GHz and 31.4 GHz, whose data can be used to find surface water, humidity, and temperature conditions. NAST-K flies along with the existing NAST-M instrument at an altitude of 18 km in the NASA ER-2 high altitude aircraft. The primary function of NASTK is to provide coverage of channels 1 and 2 of the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) aboard the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) satellite, scheduled to be launched in October 2011. The combined NAST-M/K system can validate the performance of ATMS on all channels with data products up to 17km, by underflying the satellite along the same ground track and collecting correlated data. NAST-K has fullwidth at half maximum beamwidths of 7.4° and 6.8° for the two channels respectively, which is approximately consistent with NAST-M. The effective spot size of NAST-K is 2.3km in diameter for the wider 23.8GHz channel at nadir, providing an areal resolution approximately 1000 times greater than ATMS. The major contributions of this thesis include the system-level design of NAST-K, the development of the video amplifier and embedded environmental monitor, and the analysis of the antenna system.

Book excerpt: The principles and related concepts and methods of atmosphere remote sensing by using microwave radiometers are explained as clear as possible in this book. Practical design tools are presented as well, including: A. The method and procedure for designing and analyzing a microwave radiometer are presented through an example design of a V band microwave radiometer, and the design is down to schematic level including design of radiometer microwave front end and radiometer controller; B. A lot of MATLAB programs are presented in this book for designing and simulating radiometers, including programs to calculate atmosphere microwave absorption coefficients, programs to execute the tipping curve calibration, and programs to retrieve atmosphere temperature profile; C. The Backus-Gilbert method has been applied successfully for resolving the inverse problem of radiation transfer equation and a full MATLAB program package for implementing the Backus-Gilbert algorithm is presented in this book. D. An example design of a V-band radiometer by using substrate technology is presented as well. E. Finally, almost every aspects of the two point calibration method are analyzed and a real time calibration procedure (doing calibration while carrying out measurement) is proposed for noise adding radiometers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly revising and updating an Artech House classic from 1989, this authoritative resource offers you a comprehensive and current understanding of radiometer systems and shows you how to design a system based on given specifications, taking into account both technical aspects and geophysical realities. The second edition contains a wealth of new material, including coverage of two of today's hottest microwave radiometry topics - polarimetric measurements and aperture synthesis. The book provides you with a complete explanation of radiometer sensitivity, and describes the concept of absolute accuracy and it's associated problems. The four major radiometer principles - total power, Dicke, noise-injection, and correlation - are presented in detail and their sensitivities are derived from the basic sensitivity formula provided in the book. Additionally, you find detailed review of the DTU noise-injection radiometer system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book begins by describing the construction of microwave radiometers at frequencies between 4 and 22 GHz using low cost components acquired from the Internet. The design is based on the lock-in amplifier approach developed by Dr. Robert Dicke in the 1940's. An historic picture of Dicke taking sky measurements using one of his radiometers is shown in the top-left (Figure 41 on page 64). Although microwave technology has advanced considerably, Dicke's basic design hasn't changed much. The radiometers described in this book were used to observe some well known atmospheric and surface features using far field measurements. Also discussed are less understood and more challenging issues pertaining to radiometer calibration and surface emissivity determination using near field measurements. The book ends with three chapters on satellite microwave radiometers. These chapters describe the history and measurements which played a large part in establishing the role of microwave radiometry in earth remote sensing. Examples also reveal unresolved observations that need to be better analyzed and understood after years of launching new satellite instruments. In addition to describing the radiometers and measurements, analytical models are developed to help bridge the gap between observations and their physical interpretation. As such, this book should be of interest to those studying microwave radiometry and its use in remote sensing of the earth's atmosphere and surface. Dr. Norman Grody began his study of microwave radiometry when working at NASA in 1971 at the time when they first began launching experimental instruments on satellites to view earth from space. He then joined NOAA in 1972 working on more advanced radiometers developed by the Air Force, Navy, NASA and NOAA. Until his retirement from NOAA in 2005 he was responsible for evaluating the performance of satellite microwave radiometers and developing algorithms to derive surface and atmospheric parameters from the measurements. These parameters such as temperature, water vapor, rain rate, snow cover, sea ice and sea surface winds are used by various organizations to monitor, analyze and forecast the global weather and climate. The top-right picture (Figure 68 on page 98) shows an example of global.

Book excerpt: An airborne, microwave radiometric search set for the detection of icebergs was developed and flight tested. In this report, basic specifications are reviewed, radiometric theory and practice are discussed, design details and development problems are reviewed, radiometer specifications, characteristics, installation and operation are described, and the service approval tests are summarized. The particularly vexing problem with radome aerodynamic characteristics and the solution of the problem are discussed in some detail. Samples of radiometric data over icebergs, ships, sea ice, and over land are given. (Author).

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Presented is a radiometric sensor and associated electromagnetic propagation models, developed to facilitate non-invasive core body temperature extraction. The system has been designed as a close-proximity sensor to detect thermal emissions radiated from deep-seated tissue 1 cm - 3 cm inside the human body. The sensor is intended for close proximity health monitoring applications, with potential implications for deployment into the improved astronaut liquid cooling garment (LCG). The sensor is developed for high accuracy and resolution. Therefore, certain design issues that distort the close proximity measurement have been identified and resolved. An integrated cavity-backed slot antenna (CBSA) is designed to account for antenna performance degradation, which occurs in the near field of the human body. A mathematical Non-Contact Model (NCM) is subsequently used to correlate the observed brightness temperature to the subsurface temperature, while accounting for artifacts induced by the sensor's remote positioning from the specimen. In addition a tissue propagation model (TPM) is derived to model incoherent propagation of thermal emissions through the human body, and accounts for dielectric mismatch and losses throughout the intervening tissue layers. The measurement test bed is comprised of layered phantoms configured to mimic the electromagnetic characteristics of a human stomach volume; hence defines the human core model (HCM). A drop in core body temperature is simulated via the HCM, as the sensor monitors the brightness temperature at an offset distance of approximately 7 mm. The data is processes through the NCM and TPM; yielding percent error values
