Book excerpt: he sub-wavelength resolution capability of Near-Field Optics has been proposed and demonstrated over three decades ago, however the benefits this technology offers in terms of ultra-high density data storage have not yet been fully exploited. There are currently two main approaches to developing a Near-Field optical system for data storage, the "Aperture Probe" approach and the "Solid Immersion Lens (SIL)" approach. While considerable research efforts have been devoted to these approaches there are still a number of process limitations, which prevent them from being commercially viable solutions to the data storage problem facing the computer industry today. This thesis proposes a novel approach for developing an Aperture Array for a Near-Field Optical Read Head. The entire sub-wavelength aperture array design for the Read Head uses standard Micromachining techniques that have been developed for Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) milling systems. The processing methods used, ensure that the device can be manufactured T repeatedly and uniformly. Further, the device fabrication process uses batch processing technologies, which will make device manufacturing extremely cost effective. While the Aperture probe and SIL technologies have been able to demonstrate subwavelength resolution, they do not provide high enough data rates to be useful in a commercial setting. An array-based approach would alleviate the data rate problem, however neither technology lends itself readily to such an approach. The technique used in this project enables such an array-based approach, which will facilitate very high data rates. This thesis documents the entire design, fabrication and testing sequence of the Aperture Array. The results conclusively show that this approach can be used to develop a robust Near-Field read head.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical disc industry is one of the successful businesses in the world, and huge amounts of discs and drives have been spread all over the world. More than a billion discs are produced and distributed every year. Since the ?rst optical discs – Laser Discs and Compact Discs (CD) – were shipped in the early 1980s, they have rapidly dominated the world music market, and DVDs will replace the video-tape market in the near future. The optical disc and drive technologies consist of the most advanced and integrated systems with regard to optics, physics, chemistry, mathematics, electronics, mechanics and related subjects; a huge number of scientists and engineers have engaged in the research and development of the systems. One of the key factors of the development of the optical disc systems, of course, results in the availability of cheap, stable, and reliable semiconductor laser units. Now, you can store data up to 4. 7GB on a single side of the 12-cm DVD, and in the near future, blue laser technology will allow storage of more than 20GB on the same size disc. We should not however forget the other core technologies such as focusing the beam on the surface of a spinning disc precisely, and encoding and decoding digital data. The data capacity of optical discs has increased from 0. 65GB to 25GB by the year 2003, and we certainly believe it will continue to increase with new technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and chemical engineering have changed significantly in the last decade. They have broadened their scopeâ€"into biology, nanotechnology, materials science, computation, and advanced methods of process systems engineering and controlâ€"so much that the programs in most chemistry and chemical engineering departments now barely resemble the classical notion of chemistry. Beyond the Molecular Frontier brings together research, discovery, and invention across the entire spectrum of the chemical sciencesâ€"from fundamental, molecular-level chemistry to large-scale chemical processing technology. This reflects the way the field has evolved, the synergy at universities between research and education in chemistry and chemical engineering, and the way chemists and chemical engineers work together in industry. The astonishing developments in science and engineering during the 20th century have made it possible to dream of new goals that might previously have been considered unthinkable. This book identifies the key opportunities and challenges for the chemical sciences, from basic research to societal needs and from terrorism defense to environmental protection, and it looks at the ways in which chemists and chemical engineers can work together to contribute to an improved future.
