Book excerpt: To fully utilize the advances of electro-optic (EO) polymer research, a detail design and model of a triple stacked poled-polymer, electro-optic waveguide modulator was developed to provide guidance in the selection of cladding layers and demonstrate how the mode conditions affect the overall device performance. Waveguide devices depend not only on the EO materials used in the core, but also on the cladding materials. In contrast to most of the research that has focused on molecular engineering of the electro-optically active materials to improve the core properties of the waveguide, this work studied the effects of cladding material properties to improve overall device performance of an electro-optic waveguide modulator. Various, commercially available polymer materials were identified and investigated for potential cladding layers according to their optical, electrical, process ability and film casting properties. A poled-polymer, strip-loaded waveguide, EO modulator is designed and analyzed in terms of single mode conditions, optical loss due to the metal electrodes, modulation efficiency, and mode size. Two designs were compared: Design 1 optimized the half-wave voltage for a single-arm modulator (Vpi = 2.5 V) with a nearly symmetric waveguide by maximizing modulation efficiency and minimizing the overall thickness of the waveguide; Design 2 optimized the insertion loss (6 dB) with a strongly asymmetric waveguide by maximizing the overall mode size to most efficiently overlap with a single mode fiber. High frequency analysis of a microstrip electrode showed a modulator with a push-pull scheme can be fabricated with half-wave voltage (Vpi) of 4.0 V for Design 1 and 5.1 V for Design 2 at 3 GHz. Some general guidelines in the design of a poled-polymer electro-optic modulator incorporating a strip-loaded waveguide structure are suggested. First, the core layer thickness and ridge width supporting single mode propagation should be fabricated as large as possible by increases the asymmetry of the refractive index between the top and bottom cladding layer. Second, the thicknesses of the top and bottom cladding layers must be optimized through an analysis of the waveguide mode amplitude distribution so that the electrode-associated optical loss is minimized to a required level while simultaneously the total thickness of the waveguide is minimized. The ridge structure greatly simplifies fabrication procedures, reduces fabrication steps and eliminates propagation losses due to roughness of etched sidewalls. The results of the analysis were modeled in beam propagation software to confirm the ideal conditions for single mode propagation.

Book excerpt: Electro-optic (EO) polymers have proved to be promising for use in optical modulators due to their broad bandwidth and higher electro-optic coefficient compared to conventional inorganic ceramics, while maintaining compatibility with Si-Photonics hence lowering the manufacturing cost. While modulator designs using EO polymers have been explored previously, these designs require a long length (>1cm) to obtain a phase shift of 180o at reasonable voltage levels. In order to produce a modulator with a smaller footprint, the device must have a low figure of merit of VÏ0xL. Conventional EO polymer-based modulators offer decent bandwidth characteristics (>50GHz), however, the length - half wave voltage tradeoff limits the size and the practicality. In recent years, the use of slow-wave photonic crystal (PhC) structures has been shown to enhance the half wave voltage without increasing the modulator length. The goal of this work is to enhance phase sensitivity performance of an electro-optic (EO) polymer based phase modulator (PM) design by utilizing PhC structures. The addition of a PhC structure produces a slow-wave effect, which allows for control of the group velocity of the optical wave in the core of the integrated optic channel. PhC structures consist of a base substrate with a second material added along periodic lattice, in close proximity to the core of the optical waveguide. Analysis and numerical calculation group velocity in 1D and 2D PhC structures showed an increase in the effective group index of refraction, indicating a slowed group velocity of the lightwave. These structures were modeled using MATLAB by considering periodic structures to obtain the sensitivity of the group index of refraction in relation to cell size and periodicity. The PhC structure was analytically modeled and then verified using periodic boundaries utilizing finite element method (FEM). The FEM based HFSS simulation has included 1D and 2D PhC topologies using material combinations of PMMA/Air or PMMA/Si3N4 structures. The primary goal of this thesis is then achieved by adding the modeled slow wave structure to a traveling-wave EO polymer-based phase modulator as either a substrate or superstrate to the optical core. To quantify the phase modulation sensitivity improvement, the traveling wave phase modulator was modeled first using FEM and beam propagation methods (BPM) to model RF and optical characteristics. Then, both substrate and superstrate topologies are introduced to the PM design. Utilizing both techniques, the EO polymer based PM design with an added PhC structure reduces the length voltage product required to achieve optical phase of 180o. Phase improvement due to the added structure was achieved through modulator simulation, yielding an improved effective EO coefficient of 162.2 pm/V compared to 67.9pm/V from the original modulator. The optimal topology a high phase improvement was chosen to be the superstrate design using a 2D PMMA/Air topology, whereas the most practical manufacturing challenge was chosen to be the 2D PMMA/Si3N4 topology with a superstrate design.

The Mach Zehnder modulator was chosen as the test device to demonstrate the NIL patterning technique for DNA-CTMA as well as the unique optical and electrical properties of the DNA-CTMA as a cladding material for poled electro-optic polymers. Towards this goal, a DNA-CTMA clad inverted ridge waveguide is demonstrated at 633 nm and 1550 nm, the structure of which is patterned directly in the DNA-CTMA cladding by NIL. Additionally, EO modulation is demonstrated in a slab waveguide structure with DNA-CTMA cladding and SEO110 EO polymer core.Marine-derived deoxyribonucleic acid biopolymer (DNA-CTMA) is a green, nontoxic, low cost optical polymer material derived from waste products of the salmon fishing industry. It exhibits low optical loss at 1550 nm, forms a thin flexible film, is compatible with existing poled polymer technologies, increases the poling efficiency when used as a low resistivity cladding layer, and is thermally stable to 200 oC. Due to chemical incompatibility with the photoresists and the associated solvents, NIL has been developed for patterning the DNA biopolymer cladding to form an inverted ridge waveguide for the basis of the Mach Zehnder modulator.While DNA-CTMA presents significant advantages over other commonly used cladding materials for the 1550 nm wavelength range, one of the commonly used bands for optical communications, the mechanical properties and environmental susceptibility of the material poses significant fabrication challenges. A study of the effects of optical and mechanical effects of environmental humidity exposure are presented for the DNA-CTMA and SEO110 polymers used in the inverted ridge waveguide. While the soft, flexible nature of the DNA-CTMA is desirable for certain applications, this presents a challenge in producing a clean polished window for optical coupling. Incompatibility with standard polishing techniques has led to the study of focused ion-beam milling (FIB) as a technique for polishing the DNA-CTMA film edge.This dissertation presents a demonstration at 633 nm and 1550 nm of an inverted ridge waveguide patterned by NIL in the DNA-CTMA cladding. Optical modulation in a slab waveguide structure consisting of the same polymer layers as the inverted ridge waveguide is also demonstrated, which together with waveguiding in an inverted ridge waveguide presents the case for the DNA-CTMA clad Mach Zehnder modulator. In this dissertation the FIB polishing technique for DNA-CTMA is demonstrated as a means to overcome the challenges of mechanically polishing the DNA-CTMA polymer. A study of the optical and mechanical effects of environmental exposure for DNA-CTMA and SEO110 is presented along with an analysis polymer film stresses as a result of fabrication processes and environmental exposures. This dissertation represents a significant advancement in fabrication techniques for DNA-CTMA thin films with the development of NIL for DNA-CTMA and is a significant step towards fully patterned DNA-CTMA EO waveguide devices.

This initial coupling function is iteratively modified using Newton's method to obtain a coupling design that can be implemented in a polymer waveguide. Approaches to achieving the variable coupling, including regions of negative coupling, are discussed.

As a result, the demand for high-speed data transmission with low driving voltage is continuously growing up with costs that should be kept below a minimum. Besides communications, a growing number of applications for EO-TWM is continuously emerging with equally stringent requirements. This Thesis is concerned with advances in the eld of systematic design and optimization of EO-TWM for coping inverse of the velocity matching constant has been shown to govern the low-loss limit (LL), while in the velocity matching limit (VM), a constant bandwidth times squared-length rule proportional to the inverse of the squared loss constant has been found more appropriate. In this work we provide insights into the trade-o issue in EO-TWM, and a complete picture of the applicable gures of merit for every operative range. Besides the known LL and VM gures of merit, two intermediate ranges, the quasi-low loss (QLL) and the quasi-velocity matching (QVM), have been identi ed. Also novel closed-forms expressions fully accounting for the e ffects of the skin-e ffect electrode loss and optical-electrical wave velocity mismatch, explicitly relating the operative bandwidth and the electrode length in EO-TWM, have been found. Novel bandwidth and electrode-length charts have been created, which constitute a useful tool for the optimization and design of this modulators. A graphical interface tool called MZM-GIT has been built integrating the analytical optimization and design strategies developed throughout the Thesis. With the aid of the MZM-GIT, several proposals of optimized MZM designs based on practical structures described in literature, and also based on the industry trends, are made and analyzed. with the industrial demands. In EO-TWM, the accumulated electro-optic e ect over the optical wave grows with the co-propagated traveling wave (TW) length, allowing to reduce the required RF driving power. However, in typical electro-optic materials for modulators, among which LiNbO3 stands up, due to the natural mismatch between the velocity of the RF and the optical waves, the modulation bandwidth decreases with the TW length, giving place to a well-known trade-o ff. In typical LiNbO3 substrates, in which this Thesis is focused, this trade-off is seen to mainly depend on the values of the electrical loss constant and the e ective wave velocity mismatch in the TW structure that forms the electrodes, usually a coplanar waveguide (CPW). Special emphasis has historically been placed on the optimized design of the CPW in EO-TWM. In this Thesis the study of closed-form expressions for the propagation parameters of CPW as a function of the geometry, has proven useful for the design and optimization procedures sought. Although some interesting approaches to closed-form formulations have been found in literature, none of them completely ful lls the desired requirements of providing a reliable yet simple description of propagation in CPW, appropriate to systematic and easy to follow design rules for EO-TWM, and therefore new simpli ed closed-form expressions for the CPW transmission parameters have been developed. In a second part of the Thesis, the bandwidth-length trade-off has been examined. To date, two bandwidth-length rules have been proposed: a constant bandwidth-length product proportional to the inverse of the velocity matching constant has been shown to govern the low-loss limit (LL), while in the velocity matching limit (VM), a constant bandwidth times squared-length rule proportional to the inverse of the squared loss constant has been found more appropriate. In both, the use of a thin highly doped layer ensures a good overlap between the applied electric field and optical mode. The design space of both PMS and loaded CPS electrodes are fully characterized. Waveguides of low propagation loss are designed. Wide bandwidth traveling wave modulators require low optical and microwave insertion loss, impedance matching, velocity matching and low half wave voltage. The simulation results predict that modulators with PMS electrodes have a limited frequency response while the modulators with CPS loaded electrodes have an electrical 3 dB bandwidth up to 70 GHz for 1cm device and Vpi of 9.4 V·cm.
