It was there in the white heart of the dying campfire; it hung in the shadows that hovered over the flickering light; it drifted in the darkness beyond. This hour, when the day had closed and the lonely desert night set in with its dead silence, was one in which Cameron's mind was thronged with memories of a time long past-of a home back in Peoria, of a woman he had wronged and lost, and loved too late. He was a prospector for gold, a hunter of solitude, a lover of the drear, rock-ribbed infinitude, because he wanted to be alone to remember. The story describes the recent uprising along the border, and ends with the finding of the gold which two prospectors had willed to the girl who is the story's heroine.

Zane Grey’s "Desert Gold" is a Western novel from 1913 which successfully combines adventures and romance, dangers and courage. Pearl Zane Grey was an American author born in 1872. He is best known with his adventure novels which idealize the American frontier and which largely created a new genre called western. The novel "Riders of the Purple Sage", published in 1912, earned Grey wide popularity. The book turned to the author’s all-time-best seller and also one of the most successful Western novels. Zane Grey wrote more than 80 books which later inspired many Western writers who followed in Zane Grey’s footsteps.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Desert Gold a Romance of the Border Then a sharp clink Of metal on stone and soft pads of hoofs in sand prompted Cameron to reach for his gun, and to move out Of the light of waning campfire. He was somewhere along the wild border line between So nora and Arizona; and the prospector who dared the heat and barrenness Of that region risked other dangers some times as menacing. Figures darker than the gloom approached and took shape, and in the light turned out to be those Of a white man and a heavily packed burro. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: THE dark face vanished. Dick Gale heard footsteps and the tinkle of spurs. He strode to the window, and was in time to see a Mexican swagger into the front door of the saloon. Dick had only a glimpse; but in that he saw a huge black sombrero with a gaudy band, the back of a short, tight-fitting jacket, a heavy pearl-handled gun swinging with a fringe of sash, and close-fitting trousers spreading wide at the bottom. There were men passing in the street, also several Mexicans lounging against the hitching-rail at the curb."Did you see him? Where did he go?" whispered Thorne, as he joined Gale. "Those Greasers out there with the cartridge belts crossed over their breasts-they are rebels.""I think he went into the saloon," replied Dick. "He had a gun, but for all I can see the Greasers out there are unarmed.""Never believe it! There! Look, Dick! That fellow's a guard, though he seems so unconcerned. See, he has a short carbine, almost concealed.... There's another Greaser farther down the path. I'm afraid Rojas has the house spotted.""If we could only be sure.""I'm sure, Dick. Let's cross the hall; I want to see how it looks from the other side of the house."

He bent his head listening. A soft wind fanned the paling embers, blew sparks and white ashes and thin smoke away into the enshrouding circle of blackness. His burro did not appear to be moving about. The quiet split to the cry of a coyote. It rose strange, wild, mournful - not the howl of a prowling upland beast baying the campfire or barking at a lonely prospector, but the wail of a wolf, full-voiced, crying out the meaning of the desert and the night.

Book excerpt: Robert Burton leads a solitary life in the desert as a gold prospector under the alias of Cameron. Burton is plagued by the demons of his past, but mainly the woman whom he wronged and disgraced. He encounters another man during his lonely sojourn through the desert, although he loathes to have anyone for company the two stay together. The older man discloses his identity as Jonas Warren, a man searching for his disgraced daughter who came West to start a new life when she found herself pregnant and the man she loved left her to disgrace. Burton confesses he is the man who shamed Nellie Warren, but he informs the aggrieved father that he had found Nellie and married her, thus giving their child a legitimate name. A truce is called, and Jonas forgives Burton. Unfortunately, the two men get taken by surprise by a sudden sandstorm. The two men take shelter under a rock shelf and Burton finds gold nuggets laying on the ground. Unfortunately, both men perish from the affects of the storm, but Burton is able to leave behind a note leaving half of the find to his daughter Nell Burton and the other half to whomever finds it. He also leaves his marriage certificate. Years later Richard 'Dick' Gale comes to the border town of Casita. He has come West to prove to his father that he can be a man and stand on his own two feet. Dick meets an old friend, cavalry officer George Thorne, not long after his arrival. Thorne enlists Gale's help in rescuing the woman he loves from the dangerous Mexican rebel leader Rojas. Gale's friend has fallen in love with Mercedes Castañeda, a beautiful aristocrat who had to escape Mexico after Rojas killed her father and tried to kidnap her. Rojas pursues the woman relentlessly and has followed her to Casita. Thorne encountered Mercedes after she had crossed the border and they fell instantly in love with one another. Gale agrees to help Thorne and Mercedes escape Casita and the clutches of Rojas.
