A tese que se pretende demonstrar é que os significados maiores desta mudança são, de um lado, a erosão do paradigma agrário que sustentou as visões predominantes sobre o rural ao longo de todo o último século, e, de outro, a intensificação de um longo e heterogêneo processo de racionalização da vida rural. Um processo através do qual o rural, em vez de desaparecer, se integra por completo à dinâmica mais ampla dos processos de desenvolvimento, por meio tanto da unificação dos diferentes mercados (de trabalho, de produtos e serviços, e de bens simbólicos) como também por meio da criação de instituições que regulam as formas de uso social destes espaços, agora amalgamando interesses que têm por portadores sociais segmentos originários também de outras esferas.

Os projetos de assentamento convencionais (PAs), com forte processo de monopolização territorial do capital, denotam práticas que transfiguram o ethos camponês ao fundar relações sociais e produtivas pela lógica da mercadoria, da renda da terra e de transformação ou da proeminência do valor de troca em detrimento ao valor de uso da terra. Por sua vez, os projetos de assentamento ambientalmente diferenciados (PDSs), com trajetórias ou práticas socioespaciais, nos remetem à dimensão central das formas de reprodução camponesa (modo de produção camponês), sem desconsiderar os limites de suas transformações, consolidam territórios camponeses, o que evidenciam relações sociais em que a mercadoria e o valor de troca não ocupam centralidade nas formas de vida. As expressões dos processos de resistência camponesa e de sua efetiva reprodução podem ser explicitadas a partir de elementos do território (relações de poder, normas, símbolos e identidade). Estes elementos são dimensões de vida construídas nos assentamentos rurais, com avanços e revezes segundo as formas de organização e luta, e que consolidam territórios diferenciados.
