This comprehensive book examines the causes and consequences of parenting distress, drawing on a wide array of findings in current empirical research. Kirby Deater-Deckard explores normal and pathological parenting stress, the influences of parents on their children as well as children on their parents, and the effects of biological and environmental factors. Beginning with an overview of theories of stress and coping, Deater-Deckard goes on to describe how parenting stress is linked with problems in adult and child health (emotional problems, developmental disorders, illness); parental behaviors (warmth, harsh discipline); and factors outside the family (marital quality, work roles, cultural influences). The book concludes with a useful review of coping strategies and interventions that have been demonstrated to alleviate parenting stress.

Book excerpt: When conducting parenting plan evaluations, mental health professionals need to be aware of a myriad of different factors. More so than in any other form of forensic evaluation, they must have an understanding of the most current findings in developmental research, behavioral psychology, attachment theory, and legal issues to substantiate their opinions. With a number of publications on child custody available, there is an essential need for a text focused on translating the research associated with the most important topics within the family court. This book addresses this gap in the literature by presenting an organized and in-depth analysis of the current research and offering specific recommendations for applying these findings to the evaluation process. Written by experts in the child custody arena, chapters cover issues associated with the most important and complex issues that arise in family court, such as attachment and overnight timesharing with very young children, dynamics between divorced parents and children's potential for resiliency, co-parenting children with chronic medical conditions and developmental disorders, domestic violence during separation and divorce, gay and lesbian co-parents, and relocation, among others. The scientific information provided in these chapters assists forensic mental health professionals to proffer empirically-based opinions, conclusions and recommendations. Parenting Plan Evaluations is a must-read for legal practitioners, family law judges and attorneys, and other professionals seeking to understand more about the science behind child custody evaluations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising a child with ADHD is simply life times ten. I am ten times blessed. I am ten times loved. I am ten times alive. This is the true story of a mother raising a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It's the story of the challenges, the blessings, and the rewards of parenting these special children, and her book includes helpful suggestions for diagnosis, medication, schooling, and tips for successful day-to-day management. Life with a child who has ADHD can be exhausting. Parents are inundated with information, overwhelmed by decision-making, and often numb and fatigued from meeting everyday challenges. But there is hope and beauty in every day. There is progress and victory in every hour. And there is an abundance of laughter and love in every moment. As I journeyed through the years of my son's upbringing I often said, "Life is an adventure! And I am going to give it everything I have." What I have is what God gives to me, and God richly blessed me with a child who has ADHD.

Book excerpt: Attachment research has tremendous potential for helping clinicians understand what happens when parent–child bonds are disrupted, and what can be done to help. Yet there remains a large gap between theory and practice in this area. This book reviews what is known about attachment and translates it into practical guidelines for therapeutic work. Leading scientist-practitioners present innovative strategies for assessing and intervening in parent–child relationship problems; helping young children recover from maltreatment or trauma; and promoting healthy development in adoptive and foster families. Detailed case material in every chapter illustrates the applications of research-based concepts and tools in real-world clinical practice.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study involved implementation and assessment of a mothers training program for a group of mothers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Training aimed to improve mothers' knowledge of behavior management techniques and their capacity to handle daily stresses in raising their children. The population was mothers whose children were diagnosed with ADHD and receiving psychiatric treatment on an out-patient basis. A sample of 41 mothers participated in two experimental and one waiting list control groups. Pretest posttest quasi-experimental and waiting list control groups design was used in the study. The training program was translated and adapted from Cunningham's Community Parent Education Program (COPE). The program continued on a once a week basis for twelve weeks, each session lasting for two hours. Mothers, fathers, and children completed a series of measures to test the effectiveness of the training. Results indicated that no training related overall change on measures in which fathers and children were informant. However, there was evidence for effectiveness of training as far as mothers were concerned. Compared to mothers in the control group, mothers in the training groups obtained more knowledge on child management, and believed that their children's internalizing and total problems decreased. There was a minor tendency for a decrease in children's diagnostic symptoms as observed by mothers.
