Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located along the shallow falls midway between Springfield and Windsor, Suffield was a convenient place to cross the Connecticut River. Ferries north of the falls were supplemented in 1808 by a wooden bridge downstream. But it was in 1893 that the iron bridge leading to the busy Thompsonville manufacturing village in Enfield opened and encouraged residential growth in this corner of rural Suffield. In an ideal setting for the early-20th-century influx of multicultural immigrants, East Suffield's established Yankee families became juxtaposed with later European arrivals working in Thompsonville's industries. The vibrant diversity and opportunity in the neighborhood continued until the mill and the bridge closed, leaving only memories.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crossing the Connecticut: An Account of the Various Public Crossing of the Connecticut River at Hartford Since the Earliest Times, Together With a Full Description of Hartford Bridge The cut of the new bridge and western approach shown in the colored frontispiece is a close approximation to the work as it will appear when completed. The tunnelling or covering of the railroad tracks for a short distance north and south of the west end of the bridge is a recent change in the plans, to protect the structure from the blighting effects of smoke from locomotives. The draw indicated in the picture has been left there to show the original design that was adopted, and to show also why the western anchor pier was placed where it is, when it should have been the third pier from the west end, to correspond with its companion - the third pier from the east end, as the first plans show. This double or "anchor" pier was transferred to the west end of the bridge in order to more solidly abut and support the east end of the draw; and when permission was finally obtained from the United States Government to build the bridge without a draw, the work had so far proceeded that this double pier could not be transferred back again to its originally designed location. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During their heyday in the mid- to late 1800s, more than 150 covered bridges dotted the landscape of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Since that time, floods, fires, and progress have claimed all but three of the historic structures. Covered bridges were heavily concentrated in the hills of northwestern Connecticut, spanning the Farmington, Housatonic, and Naugatuck Rivers. In Rhode Island, most were built by the railroads in Woonsocket, Providence, and other communities in the northern part of the state, though few pictures are known to exist. Connecticut was the birthplace of two of the nation's best known covered bridge designers: Ithiel Town and Theodore Burr. Half of the covered bridges currently standing in the United States are supported by trusses patented by Town or Burr.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating history of turnpikes, steamboats, canals, railroads, and trolleys in Connecticut Post Roads & Iron Horses is the first book to look in detail at the turnpikes, steamboats, canals, railroads, and trolleys (street railroads) that helped define Connecticut and shape New England. Advances in transportation technology during the nineteenth century transformed the Constitution State from a rough network of colonial towns to an industrial powerhouse of the Gilded Age. From the race to build the Farmington Canal to the shift from water to rail transport, historian and transportation engineer Richard DeLuca gives us engaging stories and traces the significant themes that emerge as American innovators and financiers, lawyers and legislators, struggle to control the movement of passengers and goods in southern New England. The book contains over fifty historical images and maps, and provides an excellent point of view from which to interpret the history of New England as a whole. This is an indispensable reference book for those interested in Connecticut history and a great gift for transportation buffs of all kinds.
