Book excerpt: This study explores the lived experiences and the relationship between Russian peasants and rural Russian Orthodox clergy in the early 19th century, before the abolition of serfdom. By examining the first-hand accounts of former serfs and parish priests, elements of Russian folklore, and depictions of the peasantry in Russian popular literature, this research project will trace the role of Orthodox parish leaders in the daily lives of villagers in the Russian countryside as well as the villagers’ own practiced theology. While the essence of the Russian peasantry’s livelihood is often reduced to a bleak “low culture” of mass illiteracy and both economic and spiritual poverty, the reality was much more varied. Divided into three sections, this project begins with a general discussion of Russian peasant daily reality before the abolition of serfdom. The second chapter is devoted to the various roles undertaken by parish priests in several rural villages across the ‘Great Rus’ territory, followed by an intersectional chapter which explores peasant religiosity itself. As a whole, this study relies heavily on primary sources that detail the beliefs and encounters of nineteenth century serfs, parents, siblings, landowners, priests, saints, journalists, farmers, storytellers, and Orthodox Christians. - Abstract.

Although we know a great deal about how the Bolsheviks went about doing this&—propaganda, persecution of clergy and laity, seizing church property&—scholars have not devoted much attention to the other side of the story: the people who were being persecuted and how they responded to their persecutors. Glennys Young shows how ordinary Russian peasants devised ways of asserting their religious faith during the difficult period of New Economic Policy, 1921&–28, when the Party-state was ideologically obsessed with eradicating religion. Faced with persecution, torture, and the creation of antireligious organizations such as the League of the Godless, Orthodox clergy and laity organized themselves against the Bolsheviks. They revived factional politics, even using the village soviets, the intended cornerstone of Soviet power in the countryside, to defend their religious interests. When they achieved some degree of success in their resistance, the Bosheviks were forced to respond and adapt their strategies&—a conclusion that scholars have not put forward previously. Based on extensive research in archives and published sources, Young's book will force historians of Soviet Russia to confront religious issues as central to rural politics. Her work also draws upon cultural anthropology and theories of peasant politics, making it of great interest to any scholars studying the processes of secularization and desacralization in other cultures.

Book excerpt: The Soviet Union crumbles and Russia rises from the rubble, once again the great nation--a perfect scenario, but for one point: Russia was never a nation. And this, says the eminent historian Geoffrey Hosking, is at the heart of the Russians' dilemma today, as they grapple with the rudiments of nationhood. His book is about the Russia that never was, a three-hundred-year history of empire building at the expense of national identity. Russia begins in the sixteenth century, with the inception of one of the most extensive and diverse empires in history. Hosking shows how this undertaking, the effort of conquering, defending, and administering such a huge mixture of territories and peoples, exhausted the productive powers of the common people and enfeebled their civic institutions. Neither church nor state was able to project an image of "Russian-ness" that could unite elites and masses in a consciousness of belonging to the same nation. Hosking depicts two Russias, that of the gentry and of the peasantry, and reveals how the gap between them, widened by the Tsarist state's repudiation of the Orthodox messianic myth, continued to grow throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Here we see how this myth, on which the empire was originally based, returned centuries later in the form of the revolutionary movement, which eventually swept away the Tsarist Empire but replaced it with an even more universalist one. Hosking concludes his story in 1917, but shows how the conflict he describes continues to affect Russia right up to the present day.
