Gorgeous, charming, and athletic, every girl in school throws herself at him. Zach's parents, friends, and teachers worship the ground he walks on. He has never known want or sacrifice in his charmed life. He is on top of the world. Things in Zach's perfect life begin to go horribly wrong. A murder attempt and a miraculous escape from certain death leads Zach to unheard-of powers, as an angry god seeks vengeance. The one girl Zach can't have--the beautiful, intelligent Allie Connor, who hates his guts--is the key to everything. When myths become reality, Zach must decide to sacrifice the girl he loves or let the world come to a fiery end.

Book excerpt: "The art of life is the most distinguished and rarest of all the arts." -C.G. Jung, CW 8, par. 789. The Cycle of Life explores the patterns that unfold over the course of our lives, as we set out to find our place in the world, in our efforts to live authentically, and in our search for home-that place within ourselves that can so easily be neglected or disregarded in this fast-paced modern world. In the first half of life, the task of the young traveler is to depart from home, to adventure out into the world to find his or her own individual path. However, in the second half, we find ourselves on what often amounts to a very long journey in search of home. In many a tale, the hero, for instance Gilgamesh, sets off on his road to find life's elixir, while other stories, such as the Odyssey, revolve around the hero's long and arduous journey home. Many are also familiar with the journey of Dante, who at the very beginning of his Divine Comedy finds himself "Midway along the journey of our life.” The archetypal journey of life is constantly reenacted in the never-ending process of individuation. We find ourselves returning to this venture repeatedly, every night, as we set out on our voyage into the landscape of our unconscious. Many dreams begin by being on the way, for instance: I am on my way to ... I am driving on a road that leads into the desert ... I am walking through one room after the other in a long corridor-like building ... I am walking towards my office, but it looks different than in reality ... I walk on the pavement and on the opposite side of the street someone seems to be following me ... I go down into an underground parking ... I am in my car, but someone I don't know is driving ... I have to go to the place from where I came ...

It concerns Leonard Merygates, a shy, retired highschool administrator who feels that had corporal punishment been sustained in America's public school systems, the country would not be in the condition it is today. Children would respect adults; adults would embrace social and cultural values beyond material wealth, and the streets of Hamilton City (USA) would be a lot safer. Hickory Stick also concerns the adventures of HCPD homicide detectives, Walter T. Fleischmann and Willis Loveday, who must find the vigilante that is ridding Hamilton City of its social detritus before he kills someone else.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Mario Banche, M.D. IX The neologism "coloscopy" (colonscopy, colonoscopy) is the latest addition to the vocabulary of endoscopy of the large intestine. just as the term "duodenoscopy" was in endoscopy of the upper digestive tract a few years ago. With the advent of the coloscope it is now possible to examine the large bowel more extensively and effectively than was formerly possible with the use of its rigid forerunner, the rectosigmoidoscope. The earliest rectoscopes, 11 endoscopes" introduced during the 19th century by Segales and Desormeaux (1826, 1853), were conceived for many uses-inspection of the urethra, bladder, uterus, rectum. Successive improvements eventually led to the construction of an instrument designed exclusively for endoscopy of the rectum and sigmoid colon (Bensaude, 1907). Over the following years the rectoscope underwent no substantial change and thus an abundant and homogeneous literature accrued in which the available instruments and their use were described while the endoscopic pathologic nosography and corresponding endoscopic pictures of the rectum and sigmoid colon were codified, illustrated first by simple sketches and later by still and motion photography. The literature contains many excellent publications, some in monograph form.

Book excerpt: Ian Bradley's Complete Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan has established itself across the world as the authorized and definitive 'Bible' for all those interested in the Savoy operas. Originally published in two Penguin paperbacks in the 1980's, a single-volume comprehensive compendium, hailed widely as "easily the best annotated Gilbert & Sullivan available" (Gayden Wren, New York Times) was published by Oxford University Press in 1996. This brand new 20th anniversary edition includes Thespis, Gilbert and Sullivan's first collaboration which is now being increasingly performed, despite the loss of the vocal and orchestral scores. It also features a completely new introduction, reflecting on the state of Gilbert and Sullivan nearly 150 years after the pair began their legendary collaboration, and new annotations addressing recent performance history, newly discovered 'lost' songs and dialogue, and, for the first time, Gilbert and Sullivan references in contemporary popular culture. Scholars, performers, and fans are sure to rejoice in this indispensable companion to the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, newly updated for the present day.
