Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters to Live Poets (1969) is a series of confessional poems arranged as a livre compose. It is a major work of Australian poetry having had a profound influence since it was first published. Letters to Live Poets won the Grace Leven poetry prize in 1970, and has also won a number of other awards. Bruce Beaver was born in 1928. He wrote his first poem at 8 p.m. on the evening of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Unlike the event it wasn't memorable. However, he kept on writing. Letters to live poets is his fourth book of poems; he has recently completed his fifteenth. He has been called a confessional poet, probably because of a strong autobiographical tendency in his writing. Letters is generally acknowledged to be his best work.

Download or read book The Woman's Labour written by Mary Collier and published by Renard Press Ltd. This book was released on 2021-02-24 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-century poetry was dominated by men of education and wealth, and bookcases sagged under the weight of volumes by Swift, Johnson and Pope. When Stephen Duck’s The Thresher’s Labour was published in 1730, however, it was a sensation – highlighting the plight of the working class in verse was hereto simply unthought of. Duck’s poem came to the attention of Mary Collier, a washerwoman working in Hampshire, who was astounded to read Duck’s dismissal of women as work-shy layabouts who indulged in ‘noisy prattle’, and she penned a stinging riposte, The Woman’s Labour, which reframed Duck’s relation of harvest-time toil from a woman’s perspective. This edition of The Woman’s Labour seeks to give a wider view of the conversation, and includes The Thresher’s Labour, ‘The Three Wise Sentences’ (which Collier included in the first publication of her reply), ‘An Epistolary Answer to an Exciseman Who Doubted Her Being the Author’ and the elegy she wrote for Stephen Duck after he died. 'Collier’s writing… represents an instance of resistance to oppression both gendered and class-based.' — Donna Landry, The Muses of Resistance
Book Synopsis Under the Vulture-tree by : David Bottoms
Download or read book Under the Vulture-tree written by David Bottoms and published by William Morrow. This book was released on 1987 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Penn Warren, in a recent introduction given at the Library of Congress, wrote that in the work of David Bottoms "we find a strong and original new poet. Underlying all his work is the simple and unusual conviction that the world we see is trying to tell us something." In the thirty new poems collected in Under the Vulture-Tree, the world speaks to David Bottoms in startling and disturbing ways. Again, with uncompromising realism, Bottoms explores the wilderness we thought we'd civilized, the wilderness the world proves daily is alive in the human heart. Unusual, often startling situations, coupled with the poet's powerful narrative voice, create a drama that is extraordinary in poetry today, but it is his rare talent for revealing the universal in the specific that makes his vision true witness to our common struggle.
