Il y réfute les théories du matérialisme et montre que la grande puissance qui se manifeste dans l’univers et qui le mène, sa cause active, est la Parole divine, le Logos ou le Verbe. Émanation et émané sont les mots favoris de Saint-Martin, comme ils étaient ceux de son maître Pasqualis. Et sa théorie de l’émanation éclaire sa conception des Agents du monde spirituel. Émanés du Verbe, les Agents répandus dans les espaces créent et vivifient, règlent et mènent tous les êtres moraux, en leur communiquant l’étincelle de vie que le Verbe lui-même a prise au sein de Dieu. On retrouve ici un gnosticisme beaucoup plus ancien que beaucoup ne le supposent. Supposée avoir été imprimée à Édimbourg, la première édition des Erreurs et de la Vérité parut en réalité à Lyon, en 1775. Il s'agit, selon les propres mots de Saint-Martin, d'un "Ouvrage dans lequel, en faisant remarquer aux observateurs l’incertitude de leurs recherches, et leurs méprises continuelles, on leur indique la route qu’ils auraient dû suivre, pour acquérir l’évidence physique sur l’origine du bien et du mal, sur l’homme, sur la nature matérielle, la nature immatérielle, et la nature sacrée, sur la base des gouvernements politiques, sur l’autorité des souverains, sur la justice civile et criminelle, sur les sciences, les langues, et les arts."
