Die in der Einleitung (p. 5) in Aussicht gestellte Skizze der griechischen Novellistik habe ich vorgezogen fortzulassen. Eine Einleitung zu einer solchen Skizze bietet ein Vortrag, den ich auf der vorjahrigen Philologenversammlung (in Rostock) ge halten habe; derselbe wird sich in den Verhandlungen der Ver sammlung abgedruckt finden (vgl. P. XIII); ich kann nur bitten, ihn als das aufzufassen was er sein will, als einen Vortrag, nicht als eine Abhandlung. Vielleicht komme ich spater einmal auf eine genauere Betrachtung der griechischen Novelle, und auch des griechischen Marchens (zu dessen Geschichte ich auch in diesem Buche einige zerstreute Beitrage geliefert habe) zuruck.
