Book Synopsis History of the Concept of Time by : Martin Heidegger
Download or read book History of the Concept of Time written by Martin Heidegger and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heidegger's lecture course at the University of Marburg in the summer of 1925, an early version of Being and Time (1927), offers a unique glimpse into the motivations that prompted the writing of this great philosopher's master work and the presuppositions that gave shape to it. The book embarks upon a provisional description of what Heidegger calls "Dasein," the field in which both being and time become manifest. Heidegger analyzes Dasein in its everydayness in a deepening sequence of terms: being-in-the-world, worldhood, and care as the being of Dasein. The course ends by sketching the themes of death and conscience and their relevance to an ontology that makes the phenomenon of time central. Theodore Kisiel's outstanding translation premits English-speaking readers to appreciate the central importance of this text in the development of Heidegger's thought.
Book Synopsis A Theory of Philosophical Fallacies by : Leonard Nelson
Download or read book A Theory of Philosophical Fallacies written by Leonard Nelson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented as a Vorlesung in the German philosophical tradition, this book presents the most detailed account of Nelson’s method of argument analysis, celebrated by many luminaries such as Karl Popper. It was written in 1921 in opposition to the relativistic, subjectivistic and nihilistic tendencies of Nelson’s time. The book contains an exposition of a method that is a further development of Kant’s transcendental dialectics, followed by an application to the critical analysis of arguments by many famous thinkers, including Bentham, Mill, Poincaré, Leibniz, Hegel, Einstein, Bergson, Rickert, Simmel, Brentano, Stammler, Jellinek, Dingler, and Meinong. The book presents a general theory of philosophical argumentation as seen from the viewpoint of the typical fallacies committed by anybody arguing philosophically, whether professional philosophers or philosophical laypeople. Although the nature of philosophy and philosophical argumentation is one of the most recurrent objects of reflection for philosophers, this book represents the first attempt at a general theory of philosophical fallacy. According to Nelson, it is in the shape of false dilemmas that errors in reasoning always emerge, and false dilemmas are always the result of the same mechanism--the unwitting replacement of one concept for another.

Book Synopsis The Lublin Lectures and Works on Max Scheler by : Karol Wojtyla
Download or read book The Lublin Lectures and Works on Max Scheler written by Karol Wojtyla and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic University of America Press is honored to publish the English Critical Edition of the Works of Karol Wojty?a/John Paul II. Prepared under the auspices of the John Paul II Institute in Washington DC, the English Critical Edition will comprise more than 20 volumes, covering all of John Paul II's writings in the years before his papacy and a thematic selection of his papal writings. This collection is essential for several reasons. First, gaining access to the saint's writings has posed significant challenges. Except for official papal addresses and documents preserved and disseminated by the Vatican, St. John Paul's works have been published in a large number of different venues, often with limited dissemination. Many documents need a new translation. In addition, English-language audiences have faced the challenge?even in the case of published texts?of dealing with several languages, various translations, and textual idiosyncrasies. The second volume of the series presents Wojty?a's lectures at the Catholic University of Lublin and his works on Max Scheler. This volume consists of four parts: Karol Wojty?a's lectures at the Lublin University from 1954 to 1957 (during three academic years); Wojty?a's articles related to the ethical issues discussed in the Lublin lectures; his habilitation thesis on Max Scheler from 1953; and other essays related more closely to Scheler's thought. As was the case with Volume 1, Volume 2 also relies on the original manuscripts and typescripts of Wojty?a's works. These original texts were compared with the Polish published editions, and all significant differences between them have been marked in the scholarly apparatus. Some of the essays in this volume have not been previously published in English, while some others have never been published before.
Download or read book Sentient Flesh written by R. A. Judy and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sentient Flesh R. A. Judy takes up freedman Tom Windham’s 1937 remark “we should have our liberty 'cause . . . us is human flesh" as a point of departure for an extended meditation on questions of the human, epistemology, and the historical ways in which the black being is understood. Drawing on numerous fields, from literary theory and musicology, to political theory and phenomenology, as well as Greek and Arabic philosophy, Judy engages literary texts and performative practices such as music and dance that express knowledge and conceptions of humanity appositional to those grounding modern racialized capitalism. Operating as critiques of Western humanism, these practices and modes of being-in-the-world—which he theorizes as “thinking in disorder,” or “poiēsis in black”—foreground the irreducible concomitance of flesh, thinking, and personhood. As Judy demonstrates, recognizing this concomitance is central to finding a way past the destructive force of ontology that still holds us in thrall. Erudite and capacious, Sentient Flesh offers a major intervention in the black study of life.

Book Synopsis Problems of a Sociology of Knowledge (Routledge Revivals) by : Max Scheler
Download or read book Problems of a Sociology of Knowledge (Routledge Revivals) written by Max Scheler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1980, Manfred S. Frings’ translation of Problems of a Sociology of Knowledgemakes available Max Scheler’s important work in sociological theory to the English-speaking world. The book presents the thinker’s views on man’s condition in the twentieth-century and places it in a broader context of human history. This book highlights Scheler as a visionary thinker of great intellectual strength who defied the pessimism that many of his peers could not avoid. He comments on the isolated, fragmented nature of man’s existence in society in the twentieth century but suggests that a ‘World-Age of Adjustment’ is on the brink of existence. Scheler argues that the approaching era is a time for the disjointed society of the twentieth-century to heal its fractures and a time for different forms of human knowledge to come together in global understanding.
Book Synopsis Fundamental Moral Theology by : Franz Böckle
Download or read book Fundamental Moral Theology written by Franz Böckle and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fifteen years since the Second Vatican Council, no aspect of theology has undergone such thorough scrutiny as that of moral theology. Furthermore, the discussions have not been the exclusive concern of churchmen. Theologians have entered into dialogue with everyone who is in any way preoccupied with the need to improve social order. Thus the insights of all the human and social sciences have been brought to bear in the task of reassessment and restructuring. This book presents a comprehensive scheme of moral theology which is relevant to the moral and intellectual climate of the latter decades of the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Sanctity of Life and Human Dignity by : K. Bayertz
Download or read book Sanctity of Life and Human Dignity written by K. Bayertz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Sanctity of life' and `human dignity' are two bioethical concepts that play an important role in bioethical discussions. Despite their separate history and content, they have similar functions in these discussions. In many cases they are used to bring a difficult or controversial debate to an end. They serve as unquestionable cornerstones of morality, as rocks able to weather the storms of moral pluralism. This book provides the reader with analyses of these two concepts from different philosophical, professional and cultural points of view. Sanctity of Life and Human Dignity presents a comparative analysis of both concepts.
