Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The rates of depression, particularly in young adult college age populations, are quite pervasive and troubling. Previous literature indicates collegiate student-athletes may be at an elevated risk for experiencing depressive symptoms due to unique demands and stressors in addition to navigating life as a college student. Although certain risk factors have been identified specifically pertaining to collegiate student-athletes, researchers continue to recommend further studies that may investigate risk factors for depression in this population with the intention of preventing, mitigating, and remediating depressive symptoms. More recently, the field of nutritional psychiatry, along with nutrition literature, are showing the connection between nutrition and mental health. Therefore, as more evidence is reinforcing the important role of nutrition related to mental health concerns such as depression, the aim of this study is to examine nutritional intake as a risk factor for depression specifically within the collegiate student-athlete population.
