Book excerpt: Research has shown a link between sexual risk taking among college women and a decrease in self-esteem. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the sexual risk-taking practices occurring within the academic achieving, more affluent, Caucasian and female college student population. The secondary purpose of this study is to explore what sexual risk-taking patterns exist within behavioral and sociocultural constructed variables and demographic information among college women. The variables examined are religion, self-esteem and reported depressive symptoms. Additional variables used during analysis are body weight and race and/or ethnicity of college women. There are three primary research questions being examined in this study: (a) Do college women with higher academic achievement report more sexual risk-taking practices than those with lower academic achievement? (b) Do women of a higher socioeconomic status choose birth control over disease prevention in their sexual encounters? (c) Do behavioral and sociocultural variables make a difference in risky sexual behavior of college women? The American College Health Association (ACHA) National College Health Assessment II (NCHA-II) has been used to measure the college student health habits and practices at over 540 college and universities in the United States and Canada. The instrument was administered online in spring 2010 and received 872 responses, of which 542 were from female students. The data is analyzed through multiple logistic regressions. Findings of statistical significance were found between academic achievement and sexual risk taking, the number of partners a college woman has and sexual risk taking, and increase in human papillomavirus (HPV). This study also affirmed prior research that there was a significant difference in the sexual risk taking between college women who had been diagnosed with depression in the last year. The study demonstrates the connection between depressive symptoms and sexual risk taking. The research does not present a judgment about sex--but rather, evidence regarding the lack of disease prevention, the long-term implications, and possible causes of increases in casual sex on college campuses.

Book excerpt: The prevalence of newly diagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has created urgency in identifying risk factors for STIs and other consequences of unsafe sex, especially for college students, who comprise a significant proportion of the demographic with the highest rates of STIs and unplanned pregnancies. Previous research has highlighted a pattern of risk-taking in college students, which extends to heightened sexual risk-taking, and correlates of this risk-taking behavior. Leveraging relevant theoretical frameworks, the current study examined distal (e.g., gender, adverse childhood experiences), proximal (e.g., mental health symptoms, peer norms), and situational (e.g., substance abuse) variables as predictors of risky sexual behaviors (i.e., unprotected sex, intoxicated sex). Results from the current study provided limited support for previously robust predictors of risky sexual behaviors. The notable exception is that daily substance use and daily approach sexual motives emerged as significant predictors of daily risky sexual behaviors in multi-level regression models. Although these findings may have the potential to inform intervention programs, replication studies are needed to more firmly establish the importance of these predictors, over and above previously robust predictors of risky sexual behaviors among college students.

Book excerpt: The present study was designed to contribute to the growing literature of health disparities among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) college students by investigating psychological distress, substance use, and sexual risk-taking behaviors as it relates to sexual minority status (Study 1), and also by examining how daily stressors influence risk-taking episodes in LGB individuals using ecological momentary assessment (EMA; Study 2). In study 1, participants were asked to complete a survey that included measures of stimulant use and misuse, marijuana use, perceived stress, suicidal ideation, self-worth, impulsivity, and depression. Those who identified as LGB were also given a measure of internalized homophobia. In study 2, LGB individuals screened from study 1 completed a 3-week long EMA study with 2 surveys per day, including measures of LGB-specific discrimination, stress, social influences, substance-specific cravings, substance use, and sexual risk-taking. It was predicted that, in study 1, LGB individuals would report higher levels of psychological distress, sexual risk-taking behaviors, and substance use compared to their heterosexual counterparts, and internalized homophobia would be positively associated with psychological distress. In study 2, we hypothesized that daily stressors, including LGB-specific discrimination, would precede risk-taking behaviors. LGB individuals reported higher levels of psychological distress, marijuana use and sexual-risk taking, and there was a positive association between internalized homophobia and several psychological distress domains in study 1, complimenting the hypothesis. Study 2 found that cravings and social influences were both predictors of drug use.

Some research suggests that new stressors during the transition to college may place young adults at increased risk of depressive disorders. In addition, depression in college students has been linked to a variety of risky behaviors such as alcohol use and risky sexual activity. Fortunately, research suggests that religiosity may act as a buffer and lead to lower levels of depressive symptoms and risky behavior. Current research has not adequately examined the relationship between religiosity, depression, and risky behavior among college students. In this study, depressive symptoms were measured using the 20-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale, while risky behaviors were measured using the section on risky sexual behavior from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance survey and the section on alcohol consumption from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, both developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Four questions frequently used in literature to measure critical behaviors and attitudes were used to assess participants' religiosity. It was predicted that engagement in risky behaviors would be associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms while increased religiosity would be associated with lower levels. Additionally, increased religiosity would be associated with lower levels of engagement in risky behavior. Multiple regression analyses revealed that risky behavior were not significantly associated with higher depressive symptoms, while higher church attendance was associated with lower depressive symptoms. Although not considered a risky behavior, ever being forced to have sex was associated with higher depressive symptoms. Linear regression analyses revealed that increased religiosity was associated with increased engagement in risky behavior. These findings suggest that while depressive symptoms and risky behaviors are prevalent among college students, religiosity may act as a buffer and lead to lower levels of depression and risky behavior. Limitations, implications, and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book explores the various psychosocial, sociocultural, and contextual factors that affect the sexual health of Black students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and how this environment can help develop strategies to improve sexual health outcomes for its students. The college environment provides young people with a new sense of independence, self-determination, and peer pressure to engage in risky sexual behaviors, and research has shown that Black students at HBCUs bear a disproportionate burden of poorer sexual health outcomes than students at predominately white institutions (PWIs). Uniquely focusing on the sexual milieu of Black students, Hall-Byers explains why a better understanding of these settings is needed to guide successful interventions that benefit and support the sexual health of Black students. Chapters compare data and research on sexual health outcomes of young Black men and women in comparison to those at predominately white institutions, as well as looking at the role of HBCU campus contexts and cultures, the potential psychosocial and sociocultural influences, what culturally responsive approaches may look like, and recommendations on how HBCU campuses can increase positive sexual health, such as through access, collaborative efforts among administrative offices, and reallocating resources. Sexual Health and Black College Students aims to advance the translation of culturally grounded research into effective practice and is essential reading for researchers and practitioners in sex therapy, public health, and social science as well as for college health staff, including nurses, student affairs, and campus wellness centers.

Book excerpt: Adolescence is a time when youth make decisions, both good and bad, that have consequences for the rest of their lives. Some of these decisions put them at risk of lifelong health problems, injury, or death. The Institute of Medicine held three public workshops between 2008 and 2009 to provide a venue for researchers, health care providers, and community leaders to discuss strategies to improve adolescent health.
