Book Synopsis Geochemistry of Sedimentary Carbonates by : J.W. Morse
Download or read book Geochemistry of Sedimentary Carbonates written by J.W. Morse and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-08-27 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the more basic aspects of carbonate minerals and their interaction with aqueous solutions; modern marine carbonate formation and sediments; carbonate diagenesis (early marine, meteoric and burial); the global cycle of carbon and human intervention; and the role of sedimentary carbonates as indicators of stability and changes in the Earth's surface environment. The selected subjects are presented with sufficient background information to enable the non-specialist to understand the basic chemistry involved. Tested on classes taught by the authors, and approved by the students, this comprehensive volume will prove itself to be a valuable reference source to students, researchers and professionals in the fields of oceanography, geochemistry, petrology, environmental science and petroleum geology.

Book Synopsis Carbonate Depositional Environments by : Peter A. Scholle
Download or read book Carbonate Depositional Environments written by Peter A. Scholle and published by AAPG. This book was released on 1983 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book you need to improve your interpretations of carbonates. Using a systematic treatment of the entire subject of carbonate depositional environments, this unique book is specifically designed for use by the non-specialist -- the petroleum geologist or field geologist -- who uses carbonate depositional environments in facies reconstructions and environmental intepretations. This classic work, covering settings from non-marine to deep water, focuses on the recognition of depositional environments with extenive use of color diagrams and photographs of sedimentary structures and facies assemblages. Although the ultimate purpose of this text is to improve exploration for oil, gas, and mineral deposits, it also includes environments not normally considered to be particularly prospective for oil and gas in an attempt to provide as complete a framework as possible for recognition of environments. Suitable for use as a textbook, this book is also an invaluable reference fo the specialist or advanced graduate student. It provides perspective on large-scale influences on carbonate depositional envionments such as tectonic patterns, fluctuations of sea level, variations of climate, and evolutionary patterns of organisms. --

This book was released on 1987 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petrographic and geochemical studies were used to determine the diagenetic and burial history of Travis Peak sandstones in East Texas and to relate the diagenesis to permeability variations within the formation. Permeability in much of the formation has been reduced to less than 0.1 md by compaction, cementation and minor pressure solution. Travis peak sandstone is quartzarenite and subarkose, having an average composition Q95F4R1. The first authigenic cements to precipitate were illite, which coated detrital grains with tangentially oriented crystals, and dolomite. Next, extensive quartz cement, averaging 17% of the rock volume in well-sorted sandstone, occluded much of the primary porosity. Quartz is most abundant in the lower Travis Peak, in well-connected sandstone beds that were deposited in braided streams. Dissolution of orthoclase and albitization of plagioclase followed quartz cementation and occurred prior to mid-Cretaceous movement of the Sabine Uplift. Illite, chlorite, and ankerite precipitated after feldspar diagenesis. Oil migrated into Travis Peak reservoirs in the Late Cretaceous from Jurassic source rocks. Later deasphalting of the oil filled much of the remaining porosity in some zones near the top of the formation with reservoir bitumen.
