Book excerpt: As the desire to increase the performance of hydrocarbon/liquid oxygen rocket engines naturally leads to increased combustion chamber pressures and higher energy hydrocarbon fuels, the combustion chamber and nozzle heat fluxes also increase. For engines regeneratively cooled with hydrocarbon fuel, this additional thermal stress must be effectively carried by the fuel without degradation of the cooling channel surfaces. A methodology for evaluation of the thermal performance (thermal stability and heat transfer characteristics) of hydrocarbon rocket fuels is suggested. As part of that methodology, an experimental research program to investigate the thermal performance of several new candidate hydrocarbon rocket fuels has been started. The experimental program uses a series of test rigs of increasing complexity and fidelity to successively screen identified fuels without the cost and complexity of a full engine system level test. Results of small-scale thermal decomposition experiments utilizing a System for Thermal Decomposition Studies (STDS) test rig provide an initial evaluation of the thermal stability performance of fuels from very small fuel samples. Measurements of heat transfer coefficient and the effect of wall temperature, flow velocity, and wetted-material on deposit formation in heated test channels are obtained from larger rigs, such as the NASA/GRC Heated Tube Facility and the AFRL/PRS High Heat Flux Facility. Representative results from early testing will be presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the overall approach.

Book excerpt: A heated-tube apparatus was used to evaluate the deposit formation rates of four liquid hydrocarbon fuels and to determine the effect fuel deposits have on the heat transfer characteristics of aircraft gas turbine fuel systems. The fuels tested were: a low- aromatic JP-5, a blend of 80 percent JP-5 20 percent hydrocracked gas oil, a blend of 50 percent JP-5 and 50 percent No. 2 heating oil, and a shale derived JP-5. Deposit formation rates ranging from 10 microgram/sq cm hr to 3000 microgram/sq cm hr were obtained at tube wall temperatures ranging from 480 K to 800 K, with peak formation rates occurring at initial surface temperatures of 644 K to 672 K. Results indicate that deposit formation rate correlates very well with initial surface temperature and the thermal stability rankings derived from present experimental results agree very well with rankings based upon independent JFTOT analysis. The deposit thermal resistance, as calculated from heat transfer measurements, correlates well with measured deposit quantity and thickness. Heat transfer analyses indicate that the deposit thermal conductivity increases with increasing deposit thickness, and ranges from values approximating the thermal conductivity of the fuel to values approaching that of amorphous carbon. Book excerpt: This book is intended for students and engineers who design and develop liquid-propellant rocket engines, offering them a guide to the theory and practice alike. It first presents the fundamental concepts (the generation of thrust, the gas flow through the combustion chamber and the nozzle, the liquid propellants used, and the combustion process) and then qualitatively and quantitatively describes the principal components involved (the combustion chamber, nozzle, feed systems, control systems, valves, propellant tanks, and interconnecting elements). The book includes extensive data on existing engines, typical values for design parameters, and worked-out examples of how the concepts discussed can be applied, helping readers integrate them in their own work. Detailed bibliographical references (including books, articles, and items from the “gray literature”) are provided at the end of each chapter, together with information on valuable resources that can be found online. Given its scope, the book will be of particular interest to undergraduate and graduate students of aerospace engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace levels of nitrogen compounds have been found to increase the rate of deposit formation. Three pure nitrogen compounds, i.e., 2,5 dimethylpyrrole, indole and 2 ethylpyridine, increased the rate of deposit formation at 300F up to a factor of approximately 10 at the 1000 ppm N level. Tests at lower nitrogen levels indicate that the rate of deposit formation exhibits a square root dependence on nitrogen concentration. The effect of several commercially available antioxidants on the deposit formation tendency of jet fuels at 'empty' wing tank conditions has been evaluated. Pure compound studies were also continued. A highly branched C12 paraffin (i.e., 2,2,4,6,6 pentamethylheptane) was slightly more deletereous toward deposit formation than n-dodecane. The deposit formation tendency of n-decane was strongly inhibited by the addition of diphenylmethane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decomposition and particle formation of 28 naphthenic and 8 paraffinic hydrocarbons were studied. The decomposition was approximately a first-order kinetic process, although self-acceleration was observed with most monocyclic hydrocarbons and self-inhibition was observed for polycyclic hydrocarbons. Pressure increased the decomposition rate. A detailed study of the effects of organosulfur contaminants was made. These contaminants inhibited the cracking of naphthenes and straight-chain paraffins and accelerated the cracking of branched paraffins. An increase in contaminant concentration and an increase in the number of methyl substituent groups on a hydrocarbon increased this effect. Several binary hydrocarbon mixtures were cracked. The component hydrocarbons did not crack independently. Nevertheless, the decomposition rate of the mixture could be predicted assuming no mutual interference in decomposition. The micro-coker, a new small-scale device for studying decomposition and deposit formation in a flow system, was developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deposits form in the 'empty' wing tank of a supersonic aircraft as a result of a complex free radical autoxidation process. The complete exclusion of oxygen suppresses deposit formation. Deposits are formed much more rapidly when a condensed (liquid) phase is present than when no condensed phase is present. An apparatus was designed which quantitatively measures the rate of deposit formation. Higher total pressure and increasing oxygen pressure increases the level of deposit formation. Trace levels of sulfur and nitrogen compounds markedly increase deposit formation. The nature of metal surfaces to which the fuel is exposed was found to influence the rate of deposit formation. Vanadium containing titanium alloys and copper surfaces were found to be particularly deleterious. The presence of dissolved metals also markedly increased the level of deposit formation. Studies were made with pure compounds and simple binary blends of pure compounds. The broad objective of this work was to elucidate the effect of jet fuel hydrocarbon composition on deposit formation. Currently used antioxidant additives were found to be ineffective in reducing the rate of deposit formation. The use of rust preventive and metal deactivator additives increased the rate of deposit formation. Coating an active metal surface with a polymeric material increased the level of deposit formation.
