Book excerpt: Y focusing on the life and work of Fortunato Depero (Fondo, Trento, 1892 – Rovereto, 1960) it will aim to offer a new assessment of what has been termed "the Avant-garde of avant-gardes": Italian Futurism.0This visual and literary movement, which was launched with the Manifesto published by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti on 20 February 1909 in the French newspaper Le Figaro, has found its place in history due to the radical nature of its ideas: abolishing all references to the art of the past (considered to be pure "passatismo"), exalting dynamism, the machine, speed and war, freeing words from grammatical structure and multiplying viewpoints in order to express the dynamic interaction of the material with the surrounding space. 0During its most active years, between 1909 and 1915, Futurism made an innovative and dynamic contribution to European visual art and literature. The outbreak of World War I resulted in a break in its activities with many of the Futurists participating in the combat and the death of Boccioni. Prior to this, in 1913, Fortunato Depero went to Rome where he met Marinetti and visited the exhibition on Boccioni at the Galleria Sprovieri. His encounter there with the work of Boccioni and Balla led to a transformation in his artistic output as he assimilated Boccioni’s visual dynamism and Balla’s sense of tension deriving from the abstraction of forms. In the spring of 1915 Depero joined the Futurist movement.0Exhibition: Fundación Juan March, Madrid, Spain (10.10.2014-18.01.2015).

Book excerpt: Italian futurist Fortunato Depero's 1927 'Deperio Futurista' is universally recognized as a landmark avant-garde example of the 'book as object'. Filled with bold typographic experimentation, daring layouts and featuring work in nearly artistic medium, it is widely known as 'The Bolted Book' because it is famously bound together by two large industrial aluminum bolts.0This new edition is the first exact copy of Depero's groundbreaking monograph produced since its original publication ninety years ago. This exact facsimile - featuring five types of paper and meticulously recreated bolts - includes a wealth of Depero's influential paintings, sculptures, textile and architectural designs - any or all of which can be removed and displayed as individual pieces of art. The accompanying Reader's Guide explores the extraordinary legacy of the project, setting the book in its proper context and making it available as a source of inspiration for a new generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Futurism began as an artistic and social movement in early twentieth-century Italy. Until now, much of the scholarship available in English has focused only on a single individual or art form. This volume seeks to present a more complete picture of the movement by exploring the history of the movement, the events leading up to the movement, and the lasting impact it has had as well as the individuals involved in it. The History of Futurism: The Precursors, Protagonists, and Legacies addresses the history and legacy of what is generally seen as the founding avante-garde movement of the twentieth century. Geert Buelens, Harald Hendrix, and Monica Jansen have brought together scholarship from an international team of specialists to explore the Futurism movement as a multidisciplinary movement mixing aesthetics, politics, and science with a particular focus on the literature of the movement.

Marinetti's Futurist manifesto in 1909 through its demise at the end of World War II. Presenting over 300 works executed between 1909 and 1944, the chronological exhibition encompasses not only painting and sculpture, but also architecture, design, ceramics, fashion, film, photography, advertising, free-form poetry, publications, music, theater, and performance. To convey the myriad artistic languages employed by the Futurists as they evolved over a 35-year period, the exhibition integrates multiple disciplines in each section. Italian Futurism is organized by Vivien Greene, Curator, 19th- and Early 20th-Century Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. In addition, a distinguished international advisory committee has been assembled to provide expertise and guidance.

Book excerpt: During the post-war years Fortunato Depero was one of the key figures of the second Futurist movement, not only in the field of painting but also in graphics, stage sets, the applied arts and experimental writing. This catalogue of the American exhibition, one of the most thorough and up-to-date monographs of the eclectic Italian Futurist artist, is arranged in four sections: The Avant-garde Period 1914-1917 (Plastic Complexes, We Abstract Futurists, Synthetic Architectural Forms), The Aesthetics of Magic 1917-1927 (The Automaton and the Picto-plastic Drama, The New Fantastic), The Magician's House 1919-1927 (The House of Futurist Art. International Exhibitions, Graphic Design), America, America 1928-1932 and more (Metropolitan Visions, Advertising, America Again). A definitive picture of Depero's long career, raging from the early days, to the important Futurist period of the "Casa del Mago"/The Wizard's House (the studio-laboratory created by the artist at Roverero during the time of his enthusiastic participation in the Futurist movement), until the New York period in the thirties, when he was active in costumes, sets and important drawings on urban-industrial themes.

Book excerpt: The word new in the title of this volume represents Fortunato Depero's predisposition to innovation and the continuous transformation of his ideas, but also the influence he was able to offer both to designers of the eighties - above all Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendini - and to New Futurist artists - Abate, Innocente, Lodola, Postal and Plumcake - who wisely mix Futurism, Pop Art and Kitsch.0The Depero effect can also be seen in artists such as Ugo Nespolo and Matteo Thun, who give life to effective Deperian advertising reworkings for the merchandising of the Campari company, as well as in avant-garde comics with designers such as Echaurren, Giacon, Carpinteri, who starting from the eighties have resumed - often ironically - the stylistic features of Depero.0In the 2000s, interest in films and videos grew - often centered on the exemplary life of the artist from Rovereto, which has been reconstructed thanks to the documents kept in the Depero collection - which allow in-depth research work, as in the case of Il sogno di Alberto (2011), a video installation on four screens directed by N! 03, Depero, Rovereto, New York e altre storie (2015) by Nello Correale, and finally New York film vissuto from 2020, conceived by the Istituto Barlumen specifically for the exhibition. 00Exhibition: Mart, Rovereto, Italy (21.10.2021 - 13.02.2022).

This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how Italian institutions, dealers, critics, and artists constructed a modern national identity for Italy by exporting – literally and figuratively – contemporary art to the United States in key moments between 1929 and 1969. From artist Fortunato Depero opening his Futurist House in New York City to critic Germano Celant launching Arte Povera in the United States, Raffaele Bedarida examines the thick web of individuals and cultural environments beyond the two more canonical movements that shaped this project. By interrogating standard narratives of Italian Fascist propaganda on the one hand and American Cold War imperialism on the other, this book establishes a more nuanced transnational approach. The central thesis is that, beyond the immediate aims of political propaganda and conquering a new market for Italian art, these art exhibitions, publications, and the critical discourse aimed at American audiences all reflected back on their makers: they forced and helped Italians define their own modernity in relation to the world’s new dominant cultural and economic power. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, social history, exhibition history, and Italian studies.

Book excerpt: Author and design expert Steven Heller has revisited and revised the popular classic Design Literacy by revising many of the thoughtful essays from the original and mixing in thirty-two new works. Each essay offers a taste of the aesthetic, political, historical, and personal issues that have engaged designers from the late nineteenth century to the present—from the ubiquitous (the swastika, antiwar posters) to the whimsical (MAD magazine parodies). The essays are organized into eight thematic categories—persuasion, mass media, language, identity, information, iconography, style, and commerce. This revised edition also highlights recent trends in graphic design such as aesthetic changes in typography in the digital age and the nexus between graphic design and wired culture. This is an eclectic look at how, why, and if graphic design influences our ever-evolving, diverse world. Allworth Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, publishes a broad range of books on the visual and performing arts, with emphasis on the business of art.
