Book Synopsis Denial of Sanctuary by : Michael A. Innes
Download or read book Denial of Sanctuary written by Michael A. Innes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war on terror's emphasis on denying sanctuary and safe havens to terrorists has placed a premium on physical territory, from mountain caves and frontier hideouts to the bordered world of modern states. Denial of Sanctuary highlights the limits of conventional thinking on the subject, and suggests new approaches to understanding this complex and misunderstood feature of modern conflict. Critics of the war on terror have pointed to the futility of waging war on a tactic. Its emphasis on denying sanctuary and safe havens to terrorists, rooted primarily in traditional counterinsurgency theory and poorly conceptualized policy statements, has placed a premium on physical territory, from mountain caves and frontier hideouts to the bordered world of modern states. To fully understand sanctuaries is to uncover the problems and pitfalls of waging war on locations—exposing the secret lives of multiple hidden worlds, filled with extremists, criminals, soldiers, and spies, with the pious and the profane, with dangers that lie below the surface and in the margins. As this volume makes abundantly clear, such a murky underground is far more complex and varied than the conventional wisdom suggests. Terrorists have hidden in plain sight in modern cities, used advanced communications technology to build virtual refuges, crafted militant enclaves out of the disarray of failed states, flocked to distinctly unsafe insurgent battlespaces, and generally challenged the protective limits of law, citizenship, and state. Denial of Sanctuary brings together top experts in the field to expand the debate; to explore the roots, causes and consequences of the problem; and to clarify our understanding of sanctuary in terrorist thought and practice.

Download or read book Combating Terrorism: U.S. Government Should Improve Its Reporting on Terrorist Safe Havens written by Charles Michael Johnson, Jr. and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denying safe haven to terrorists has been a key national security concern since 2002. Safe havens allow terrorists to train recruits and plan operations against the U.S. and its interests across the globe. As a result, Congress has required agencies to provide detailed information regarding U.S. efforts to address terrorist safe havens. This report assesses the extent to which: (1) the Dept. of State (State) has identified and assessed terrorist safe havens in its Country Reports on Terrorism: and (2) the U.S. government has identified efforts to deny terrorists safe haven consistent with reporting requirements. To address these objectives, the report analyzed country-level plans for the Philippines, Somalia, and Yemen. Illus. A print on demand report.

Download or read book Combating Terrorism written by Jacquelyn L. William-Bridgers and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statement of Jacquelyn L. Williams-Bridgers, Mng. Dir., International Affairs and Trade, GAO, discussing the report GAO has released on U.S. efforts to address terrorist safe havens, which provide security for terrorists, allowing them to train recruits and plan operations. Various terrorist incidents demonstrate the dangers emanating from terrorist safe havens, such as the Nov. 2008 attacks in Mumbai, India, planned, in part, from safe havens in Pakistan, and the attempted airliner bombing on Dec. 25, 2009, planned from safe havens in Yemen. The discovery of Osama Bin Laden in a compound in Pakistan, from which, according to U.S. officials, he played an active role in al Qaeda focused on attacking the U.S, makes this hearing particularly timely. This testimony focuses on (1) U.S. national strategies related to addressing terrorist safe havens, (2) terrorist safe havens identified by the Dept. of State and the threats emanating from these havens, and (3) the extent to which the U.S. government has identified efforts to deny terrorists safe havens. Figures. This is a print on demand report.

Book Synopsis Denying Sanctuary by : Robert M. Monarch
Download or read book Denying Sanctuary written by Robert M. Monarch and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical sanctuary is one of the bedrocks of a successful insurgency. Denial of these safe havens is critical to a successful counterinsurgency campaign and the eventual defeat of the insurgents by the host state. The United States must create a policy or strategy to combat insurgency through elimination or minimization of safe havens. I will examine three methodologies that have proven successful in the past to deny sanctuaries and then show how each may or may not be a pertinent strategy to defeat or eliminate safe havens while combating insurgencies in Operations ENDURING and IRAQI FREEDOM.

They are hiding in safe havens, areas of relative security that are exploited by terrorists to recruit, train, raise funds, and plan operations. The Department of State has identified 13 countries acting as safe havens today. Today, we examine three that we believe pose the most serious threat to the United States-and that is Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia-and what is the U.S. Government doing to deny these places as a refuge for terrorists.

Book Synopsis Denying Al Qaeda Safe Haven in a Weak State by : Daniel W. Detzi
Download or read book Denying Al Qaeda Safe Haven in a Weak State written by Daniel W. Detzi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dubious merger between the al Qaeda affiliates in Yemen and Saudi Arabia in January 2009 quickly raised a red flag among U.S. policy makers in Washington. The newly formed transnational terror group known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) spurred President Barack Obama to initiate a thorough review and reinvention of U.S. policy towards Yemen. In response to the President's initiative the National Security Council (NSC) developed a "two pronged strategy" which sought to strengthen Yemen's security apparatus, and improve its governance. The strategy is consistent with the administration's overall perception of the vulnerabilities inherent in a "weak state," yet an investigation into the elements which define Yemen's sociopolitical landscape, as well as an analysis of AQA's strategy, reveal that the U.S. strategy toward Yemen embraces inaccurate assumptions. This study finds that the rapid buildup of Yemen's security apparatus prior to the implementation of government reforms, has perpetuated the authoritarian rule within the country, further entrenching AQAP within the marginalized southern population.
