The gases obey the laws of gaseous dif fusion, just as they would, under the same physical condi tions, out of the body. When a liquid charged with carbonic acid is placed in a cylinder, and pressure is made on it by a piece of membrane stretched like a drumhead over a hollow piston, the acid escapes through the membrane. In like manner, when the venous blood, charged with carbonic acid, reaches the lungs, and the chest is expanded by the respira tory muscles, the atmosphere, with its pressure of fifteen pounds to the inch, rushes in, extends the membrane to its utmost stretch, and yielding to the pressure, the gas passes through the membrane into the cavity of the air-cell. This is simply obedience to the law of gaseous diffusion. The act of expiration by no means empties the air-cells. They are as full at its close as at the completion of the in spiration. The inhaled air has usually a temperature lower than that of the lungs. In reaching the equilibrium, it ex pands, and the pressure thus made facilitates the passage of oxygen into the blood. The oxygen is thus steadily making its ingress, while the carbonic acid passes outward mainly during the inspiration. In both there is merely obedience to the law of diffusion. Ethical dilemmas are discussed in detail, and they include issues that still resonate with dentists today, like the demand for cheap dental services and what to do about nervous and anxious patients. There are summaries of medical practices which have since been discarded, like using peroxide to treat ulcers and sinuses. As with any volume from the time period, there are references that are culturally dated. Still these observations have much to teach us about history generally. And I learn also, from competent authority, that no decision has ever yet been made in the United States by which the right to a dis covery or invention has been protected by damages against infringe ment by any other form of legal remedy than that provided by the patent laws, which, as appears, extends such protection in no case whatever, beyond the period of twenty-one years. Here, then, there is no legal recognition of any such absolute pro perty in any invention, as will debar the public from borrowing or adopting it, or will prohibit any subsequent discoverer of the same prin ciple, agent or method of Operating, from freely using it after the period covered by the patent shall have expired. We have said he should be logi cal, as we believe a logical man who is able to reason from cause and effect is much better prepared to perform the various Opera tions successfully and with good judgment than one not pos sessed of a logical mind. We have said he should be a physician. We should regard a dentist deficient if he were not able to prescribe hygienically for his patients with as much intelligence as the aver age practitioner of medicine. Not that we wish to under esti mate the ability of the average practitioner of medicine, but we wish the dentist to have intelligence enough to understand the diseases of the mouth and the causes Of such, and also to be able to prescribe a preventive treatment in connection with the more technical processes of filling the teeth, and to do this requires a good degree of hygienic knowledge.
