Book Synopsis Mixed Heritage in Young Adult Literature by : Nancy Thalia Reynolds
Download or read book Mixed Heritage in Young Adult Literature written by Nancy Thalia Reynolds and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed-heritage people are one of the fastest-growing groups in the United States, yet culturally they have been largely invisible, especially in young adult literature. Mixed Heritage in Young Adult Literature is a critical exploration of how mixed-heritage characters (those of mixed race, ethnicity, religion, and/or adoption) and real-life people have been portrayed in young adult fiction and nonfiction. This is the first in-depth, broad-scope critical exploration of this subgenre of multicultural literature. Following an introduction to the topic, author Nancy Thalia Reynolds examines the portrayal of mixed-heritage characters in literary classics by James Fenimore Cooper, Mark Twain, and Zora Neale Hurston—staples of today's high school English curriculum—along with other important authors. It opens up the discussion of young-adult racial and ethnic identity in literature to recognize—and focus on—those whose heritage straddles boundaries. In this book teachers will find new tools to approach race, ethnicity, and family heritage in literature and in the classroom. This book also helps librarians find new criteria with which to evaluate young adult fiction and nonfiction with mixed-heritage characters.

Tucson Homicide detective Sarah Burke is just getting used to living with her boyfriend, her fragile mother, and her hard-charging niece Denny, when a baffling murder case consumes their entire household. A man seen fighting in his home during a Fourth of July parade is later found murdered. There’s surprisingly little evidence in the house to identify who he was—apart from a gun and large sums of cash. Burke and her team of detectives begin to suspect that the victim had been involved in a money laundering scheme. But was the murder a matter of black market business, or something tragically personal? As an ICE investigator follows the money to an international drug cartel, Burke uncovers a trail that lead unsettlingly close to home

He gets his way with a bat of his eyelashes and a swish of his hips. Coffee bars, nightclubs and late, lazy mornings in bed are routine for him. He's never regretted being who he is—after all, his lovers know what they're signing up for—but he's keeping a secret. One he's more than happy to keep to himself until he meets Murdock &‘Murk' Rouse, the new tenant in his apartment building. Murk has been watching Shea flounce in and out of their shared complex for months. At first glance, he thought Shea was nothing better than the whores down on Eight Mile, but after one brief run-in with the spunky blond, he knows all Shea needs is a firm hand and a man who sees him for everything he is—smart, kinky and sexy as hell. &‘Rush Around the Clock' by Silvia Violet Finn McMurphy convinces himself his spoiled dogs are all the company he needs. Then he meets Crawford, his sexy new neighbour, and everything changes. Patient soul Finn McMurphy teaches music and drama to middle schoolers. By the time he's finished with after-school rehearsals and the private lessons he teaches to make ends meet, he's too exhausted to think about dating or even hanging out with friends. He's resigned to life with his music, his students and his ludicrously spoiled Yorkies. Then he meets Crawford Bixby. Crawford may be the most perfect man Finn has ever met—kind, good with kids, gorgeous and completely unconcerned with Finn's lack of ability to be coherent around him. Finn falls hard for him, but he's terrified of what he feels. Will he be able to step out of the controlled world he's created for himself and take a chance on love, or will he keep making excuses—rehearsals, papers to grade, dogs to walk—and push Crawford away? &‘It's Only Make Believe' by Havan Fellows Dyer's whole life is nothing but a game of play pretend. When he attempts to drag Derrick into his make-believe world, it tips on its axis. Suddenly Dyer doesn't want to play anymore. Dyer Cambell could escape all his troubles with a starring role in a new gay dramedy. At least he thinks so. Unfortunately, the producers want to cast true to script actors. Simple enough, Dyer will make them believe he's gay. Problem solved. Enter his best friend's brother. Derrick Verns had no intention of being Dyer's personal show and tell prop. But there is something about Dyer that is oddly compelling. Derrick wants to find out who the real Dyer is—the one that doesn't play make believe all the time. &‘Walkin' After Midnight' by Hank Edwards Floyd has trouble staying interested in men, but meeting Gavin changes everything. Download or read book Stone's Justice written by D.L. Brumley and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A splendid rendition of the classic good versus evil adventure in which reality reveals that the good guys don’t always win. Chief Warrant Officer Zack Stone, a DIA and Special Ops Command asset, has been sent by the Central Intelligence Agency to Berlin, Germany, to assassinate the German minister of defense. The German Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) forces one of the flight attendants working the Washington, DC, to Berlin flight to drug Zack, rendering him ineffective at defending himself upon arrival. Zack and the U.S. Army attaché to Berlin are taken captive by agents of the Kommando Spezialkräfte and brought to Gen. Erik Kruger’s country home outside Berlin. Convinced by the general that he is being set up, Zack and the colonel teamed up to investigate and bring to an end the kill order against him. Along the way, Zack and Colonel Good are under constant attack, not only by the CIA but also by a group calling themselves the New Order of Nazis, led by Dieter Bayer, a close associate of the German chancellor. This group are hell-bent on taking over the government of Germany with Chancellor Deidre Dallenbach as their leader or eliminating her during the process. They hire a professional assassin from Argentina, grandson of a real Nazi during Hitler’s days, to kill Zack after he interfered and prevented an assassination of the chancellor. Schizophrenic psychopath Charles Mason, former CIA infiltration team member with Colonel Good and Zack’s father, Bart Stone, is dead set on taking out both Zack and the colonel. The two were instrumental in breaking up a lucrative scam by the chief of CIA’s Special Activities Division, the Berlin chief of station, and Mason, bilking the U.S. government out of millions of dollars. After former SOC asset Vince Carmichael leads a hit squad that assassinates Colonel Good and his wife, Maddy, in Berlin, a final showdown between former SEAL team members, led by Carmichael, and Zack’s adopted family takes place in southeast Colorado near Colonel Good’s Three Oaks Ranch.

Book Synopsis Denny & Sonja by : Dr. Denny Menshel
Download or read book Denny & Sonja written by Dr. Denny Menshel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-09-29 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some parts of this book detail the challenges we had regarding our desire to marry; most of it details what happened thereafter. At the end of the book, there will be an update. As was mentioned earlier, our number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren is growing like a Californian wildfire. My wife and I are very proud of what we accomplished because we strongly believe that family is everything. In addition to telling my students about family, I also tell them to get a good education because it will open doors for them. I suggest that they find a job they love and then they will never have to work for a living. In 1979, that is exactly what I did as I started teaching at Erie Community College (ECC), and four months later, I started teaching at Niagara University (NU). Now in December 2017, I am thrilled to say that I still teach at both schools and could not be happier. In addition, I later obtained a course at the south campus of ECC, which means I am currently teaching at three different locations. At NU, I am told I have a job for life, and I hope the same is true at ECC. It is a blessing to work with college students, and I love everyone I work with. No doubt there are many college professors who feel exactly the same way. The starting pay can be very low, but every time there is a vacancy, hundreds of well-educated applicants quickly seek to replace them. Those who are lucky like I always have been will reap rewards that are far more important than money. This is my story, and I hope you enjoy it.
Book Synopsis High-Profile Crimes by : Lynn S. Chancer
Download or read book High-Profile Crimes written by Lynn S. Chancer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: O. J. Simpson. The Central Park jogger. Bensonhurst. William Kennedy Smith. Rodney King. These are more than crimes and criminals, more than court cases. They are cultural events that, for better or worse, gave concrete expression to latent social conflicts in American society. In High-Profile Crimes, Lynn Chancer explores how these cases became conflated with larger social causes on a collective level and how this phenomenon has affected the law, the media, and social movements. An astute and incisive chronicle of some of the most polarizing cases of the 1980s and 1990s, High-Profile Crimes shows that their landmark status results from the overlapping interaction of diverse participants. The merging of legal cases and social causes, Chancer argues, has wrought ambivalent effects on both social movements and the law. On the one hand, high-profile crimes offer important opportunities for emotional expression and raise awareness of social issues. But on the other hand, social problems cannot be resolved through the either/or determinations that are the goals of the legal system, creating frustration for those who look to the outcome of these cases for social progress. Guilt or innocence through the lens of the media leads to either defeat or victory for a social cause-a confounding situation that made the O. J. Simpson case, for example, unable to resolve the issues of domestic violence and police racism that it had come to symbolize. Based on nearly two hundred interviews, Chancer's discussions of the infamous Central Park jogger and Bensonhurst cases-as well as the rape trials of William Kennedy Smith and Mike Tyson, the assault cases of Rodney King and Reginald Denny, and, finally, the O. J. Simpson murder trial-provide a convincing, multidimensional and innovative analysis of the most charged public dramas of the last two decades.
Book Synopsis Reading Programs for Young Adults by : Martha Seif Simpson
Download or read book Reading Programs for Young Adults written by Martha Seif Simpson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School and public libraries often provide programs and activities for children in preschool through the sixth grade, but there is little available to young adults. For them, libraries become a place for work—the place to research an assignment or find a book for a report—but the thought of the library as a place for enjoyment is lost. So how do librarians recapture the interest of teenagers? This just might be the answer. Here you will find theme-based units (such as Cartoon Cavalcade, Log On at the Library, Go in Style, Cruising the Mall, Space Shots, Teens on TV, and 44 others) that are designed for young adults. Each includes a display idea, suggestions for local sponsorship of prizes, a program game to encourage participation, 10 theme-related activities, curriculum tie-in activities, sample questions for use in trivia games or scavenger hunts, ideas for activity sheets, a bibliography of related works, and a list of theme-related films. The units are highly flexible, allowing any public or school library to adapt them to their particular needs.
