Book excerpt: Excerpt from Denmark and Its People I am going to refer my readers to the 10th of March, 1863; a day that, I am sure, they will recall with pleasure; a day that shone upon a nation's freewill offering of love and gratitude to her rulers; a day on which Great Britain rejoiced with heart and voice; I need hardly add that I refer to the day of the happy union between the Princess Alexandra of Denmark and our own royal Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. On this joyful occasion, the inhabitants of the little town of Elmton had determined not to be behind, their neighbours in giving vent to their loyal and patriotic feelings; and right well did they keep their resolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Denmark: Its History and Topography Language, Literature, Fine-Arts, Social Life and Finance What is the work here offered to the reader? It is, in a few words, a book with no claim to say anything new, and which yet hopes to be something new; it treats of Denmark and a great variety of things Danish, and yet it does not speak the Danish tongue. Without pretending to teach the Danes anything, it addresses foreigners in the three languages of the world. \strangers feeling an interest in our country will find here awell, whence they may draw a goodly draught of intelligence concerning to the soil and the people, its more important institutions and intellectual move ments, seen as it were with Danish eyes. It is to be hoped that in this way foreigners will become acquainted with a little king dom, sharing, as far. As its limited sphere and means will allow, in the great civilisatory currents of our time. They will also acknowledge that, in spite of the hard trials it has undergone, the nation has courageously stood firm, and both mentally and materi ally struggled with success to keep its own rightful place among the states of Europe. The general plan is an old and favorite idea of my publisher, Mr. Cfin'stz'an East, and is in fact but a continuation of his former attempts to make known abroad Denmark as she is, and also to give an idea of the scientific progress she has made. When he proposed that I should help him in carrying out this plan, I sawat once the difficulty of the task. As far as possible there should be a oneness of labor throughout the whole, and yet each section was to be written by a separate individual; so also, the specific Danish should be seen and heard in the foreign garb, and yet without doing violence to the language in which it was to be written. Difficulties like these it was not always possible entirely to overcome, but the will to do what could be done has never been wanting. A word as to the orthography of the proper names. It is un doubtedly most correct to allow the names of places keep the form which they bear in their own country. People are seldom so absurd as to alter names of persons. But why should not also place names be generally respected? Instead in this manner, the method in vogue is often mere caprice. Sometimes the word remains unchanged; sometimes it is only slightly modified; in other cases it is twisted out of all resemblance to the original. All this chaotic spelling should be held in check, especially where Geography is concerned. The reader ought to know what the name is in the country itself, however common such forms as Copenhagen, Funen and Elsinore may be. Where the foreign and home spelling as in the case of Schleswig and Slesvig may be equally admissible, I have naturally preferred the latter. Still, for very good reasons, I have only carried this out more or less consistently in the geographical chapter, Country and people; elsewhere the current orthographies are commonly not interfered with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish People's High School: Including a General Account of the Educational System of Denmark The education Of girls seems to have been less specialized. At an early age they engaged in the industries Of the home - sewing, em broidery, spinning, and weaving. They participated in various amusements and mingled freely with the people at festivals and pub lic meetings. Their intellectual training was not entirely neglected, however, for women busied themselves also with poetry. But chiefly by work, play, and free activity were trained the mothers of a sturdy race. The Middle A yes - With the introduction Of Christianity schools were immediately established. The first Christian school is re ported to have been erected in the beginning Of the ninth century by the Apostle of the North, St. Ansgar, for 12 young children whom he, together with his assistants, instructed in Christian learn ing. 1 Throughout Europe during this period there were three chief types Of schools - monastic, cathedral, and burgher schools. Monastic schools were kept by the monks and consisted of two divi sions, an interior school for novices who were to become monks and an exterior department for the boys Of the community who desired an education chiefly for secular purposes. The studies pursued were religion, reading, writing, singing, and the subjects Of the trivium and quadrivium. For the novices there was, in addition, instruction in the rules of the order and some Of the principles Of canonical law. Cathedral schools were established in connection with the cathedral chapters and were training schools chiefly for the priest hood. Denmark, during the last half century, has passed through the throes of a wonderful regeneration. Her peasantry has been emancipated from a condition of veritable serfdom her education has been liberalised her land system, agriculture and finance have been reorganised and brought to a pitch of excellence which is the envy of many a greater, yet less perfectly developed, state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Visits to Denmark: 1872, 1874 A word about the impressions themselves They were written down at the time, in journals and letters, more or less roughly, with no idea of publication. In these days, such a visitor would be writing for a newspaper, or consciously preparing for a book. In 1872 we were not so sophisticated, and if I took copious notes it was with no thought that they would ever be published. If it had been otherwise, doubtless I should have secured many useful particulars now lost, but I hope that a cer tain freshness is retained by the fact that I thought only of my own instruction and pleasure. The elderly man who puts these pages together has not attempted to tone down the enthusiasm of the boy who wrote them; yet, if a sagacious reader is inclined to laugh at so much zeal about poetry and such sustained illusion, why, the author will not be grieved, but, somewhat sadly, will smile too. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primeval Antiquities of Denmark Vvhilst the antiquities of Rome, Greece, and Egypt have been carefully examined and systematically described by English writers, the primeval national antiquities of the British islands have never hitherto been brought into a scientific arrangement. The consequence has been that they have neither furnished those results to history, nor excited that interest with the public in general, which they otherwise would have done. This want of systematic ar rangement has probably arisen from the circumstance that on the British islands there exist remains of many different people, as the Celts, the Romans, the Saxons, the N orth-men and the Normans. It is often difficult to distinguish with certainty the antiquities of those different people, and hence the same remains have, by some authors, been called Celtic or Druidical, by others Roman, by others again Danish, &c. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the Social and Political State of Denmark: And the Duchies of Sleswick and Holstein, in 1851; Being the Third Series of the Notes of a Traveller on the Social and Political State of the European People Denmark is a country peculiarly interesting to the English traveller. It was the home of his forefathers. The three tribes who invaded England in the fifth century, the J uti, Angli, and F risi of the venerable Bede, came unquestionably from the districts of Den mark still called Jutland, Angeln, and Friesland on the Eyder. They were unquestionably a seafaring people who, although pagan, had made such progress in civilisation and the useful arts, as to build, rig out, victual, and navigate vessels of considerable Size, and consequently could be no strangers to the use of iron, the trades and tools of the blacksmith, car penter, weaver, and the co-operation of various work men required for the construction of Ships, however rude, that could cross the ocean. They had advanced beyond the social state and civilisation of hunters, Shepherds, or even mere husbandmen. Whether he favours the theory of a German origin of this people, or of a Scandinavian distinct from the German. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bishop Grundtvig and the People's High School in Denmark He had a high idea of teaching as a profession. Teaching, he says, ought to be such that to a large extent it springs from the life of the individual and must be proved in his life but the mental condition which constitutes the life, the outlook upon the experiences of life, the tone in which one expresses those experiences, must be carried into life from youth upwards, and this is one of the chief grounds for a Peeple's High School. Here we have the keynote of the whole system. Education an adjustment to the spiritual possessions of the race, as Professor Butler has put it in his interesting lectures to the students of Columbia University; an adjustment which takes into account the child's scientific inheritance, his literary inheritance, his aesthetic inheritance, his institutional inheritance, and his religious inheritance In these words of the American professor we may find a description of Grundtvig's educational programme. His own pupils were wont to sum up his teaching in these brief sentences: Spirit 18 might; spirit reveals itself in speech; spirit only works in freedom (special Reports on Educational Subjects).
