Book excerpt: Bram Stoker Award finalist Michael Laimo delivers his most horrifying novel yet! Is Bev Mathers going crazy? He's been hearing chilling voices in his head, seeing nightmarish visions that just can't be true. And it keeps getting worse and worse. No, unfortunately for Bev, he's completely sane. What's taking control of him is far more terrifying than insanity. And it has an unimaginable purpose… Bev has become an innocent pawn in an infernal game, a victim of hellish forces beyond understanding. His visions of blood and debauchery are growing more ghastly every day. Some of them — the most shocking — are real. Bev can feel his mind, his body, his very soul slipping away. Will his only hope or his eternal damnation come from… the demonlogist?

Book excerpt: The church waits in darkness. It looks abandoned, forgotten. It has no congregation, but it is not empty. Under its floor, in a pit dug long ago, lies a wooden crate that was never meant to be unearthed. But the church is finally being renovated and workmen have found the pit. How could they realize what they have done? How could they know the forces they've unleashed? Father Pilazzo is overseeing the renovation of the old church. His dream is to see it restored to its former glory. But his dream is becoming a nightmare. He's begun to see horrific visions, unholy images of death and warnings of terrors to come. And within the church forgotten men fight to survive against impossible demons, while sides are drawn for the ultimate battle... The forgotten waifs of the city shall rise up against the city's best paid yet underappreciated minions of darkness. Shall the pure be found in the hands of the homeless or dare we believe that a priest could really be sinless? Perhaps one of the possessed construction workers will have a change of heart and choose to follow the path of the rosary instead of shoving a screwdriver into another innocent's skull. You know you are in it too deep when: your hair stands on the back of your neck when you walk into a holy hundred-year old church; all you can hear is 'God' talking to you through a backwards playing piece of music; you see visions of fires rising through the city; seeing zombies crucify good Christians with construction nails against a ceiling becomes commonplace. This is where a group of bums and a lonely Father come together to attempt to save the world from the evils of the chalice of doom. Wielding only a holy relic, a measly string of wooden beads with a dangling old cross, this team seems only doomed to fail against a massive collection of power tools held by strong tattooed arms of construction workers.

This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It this book, I challenge the humanistic assumptions concerning psychological disorders. My underlying assumptions remain the same throughout. Satan is, in fact, in the business of trying to prevent the human race from growing up. It is a revolt against maturity. The reason for his revolt was because he knew that the angelic host were created and destined to help elevate human beings beyond the merely material and human, beyond even the status of angels. He knew that the angels were to be servants and instruments of that help to an unmerited glory for the human race, helping them grow right to the status of sharing God's life. This is why, when we look at the life of Jesus, we see the truly mature man overcoming every obstacle given. When Jesus defeats the strong man, what does He do? He comes upon one who is fully armed, He overcomes or conquers him, and then He strips his armor. This is, in part, why he is our model to follow. And not only is He our model, we see Jesus crowned with glory and honor. Jesus' coronation 'with glory and honor' involves exaltation over the angels, so that He is no longer "lower than the angels." Furthermore, "the world to come" has not been made subject to angels but to Jesus and to man united with Him. The 'lower than angels' stage was temporary and short-lived as God intended. Afterward comes mans exaltation. Man is the one to be glorified and, at the end, God being victorious, the righteous is indeed able to ascend to join God in glory through Jesus. This was His intentions for the human race, even after the fall of mankind. He accomplished this through the cross that Jesus died on. There, he stripped Satan of his power over death and took the keys of death from him. And now that He has ascended as King and given His Spirit, the outcome is settled. "Know ye not that we shall judge angels?"

'The Demon of the Lonely Isle' is a fever-dream of betrayal and revenge, a gothic adventure story that along with Ranpo's 'Strange Tale of Panorama Island', inspired the 1969 cult Japanese film 'Horrors of Malformed Men'. Born as Hirai Tarō, Edogawa Ranpo (1894-1965) was an influential author and critic known for his tales of the mysterious and macabre. His pseudonym is a rendering of ‘Edgar Allen Poe’ using Japanese characters. Ranpo often dealt with themes of sexual perversion and the grotesque, as well as writing more conventional detective fiction. Alexis J Brown is a translator living in London.

Book excerpt: From the moment Bob Langmuir, a down-and-out rare book dealer, spies some intriguing photographs in the archive of a midcentury Times Square freak show, he knows he's on to something. It turns out he's made the find of a lifetime--never-before-seen prints by the legendary Diane Arbus. Furthermore, he begins to suspect that what he's found may add a pivotal chapter to what is now known about Arbus as well as about the "old weird America," in Greil Marcus's phrase, that Hubert's inhabited. Bob's ensuing adventure--a roller-coaster ride filled with bizarre characters and coincidences--takes him from the fringes of the rare book business to Sotheby's, and from the exhibits of a run-down Times Square freak show to the curator's office of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Will the photos be authenticated? How will Arbus's notoriously protective daughter react? Most importantly, can Bob, who always manages to screw up his most promising deals, finally make just one big score?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UNDERWORLDS is a tri-annual paperback magazine that seeks to create a bridge between crime fiction (especially, but not neccesarily exclusively, of the noir school) and horror fiction. Because of its general air of emotional and psychological darkness, as well as its frequent themes of hopelessness, betrayal and passions gone wrong, the crime fiction of such writers as Jim Thompson, Cornell Woolrich and David Goodis shares a lot of resonance with horror fiction (some of the above referenced writers have produced what could arguably called horror fiction in the past, like Thompson's ending to THE GETAWAY and his novel THE KILLER INSIDE ME). UNDERWORLDS (a double edged title, as it has different-yet-similar meanings in both crime and horror fiction) seeks to allow writers the opportunity to explore the nexus between these two genres, and gives readers of both genres a glimpse into the world of the other.

Book excerpt: The Macks divert our gaze from our contemporary red-faced, cloven-hoofed misrepresentation of demons to remind us of the ancient roles demons were originally assigned to play. From the Tommyknockers of North American mountain mines to the South African Mbulu that waits in the river for lone travelers, A Field Guide to Demons classifies these creatures by their domains--water, mountain, forest--rather than in alphabetical or cultural order, dishing out antique and contemporary lore on these most misunderstood of spirits. A Field Guide to Demons melds folklore and mythology; maintains a surprisingly evenhanded view of demons; and reveals their role as the necessary challenger to established order, the antagonist--without which there could be no hero--and the darkness through which goodness shines brightest. --Brian Patterson

This has been shown in books, movies, places of worship, and in the therapy office. This book traces the global history of possession and looks at ways contemporary mental health professionals can help a person who believes themselves to be possessed. Written especially for clinicians, but interesting to a wide variety of readers, this book uses a variety of disciplines, including cultural studies, psychology, and personal experiences, to try and understand the phenomenon from as wide a perspective as possible, including interviews with exorcists from various backgrounds. Both believers and sceptics will find this to be a fascinating study of a controversial topic.
