Book excerpt: This demon fighting business used to be so simple. Get in, use my thrall to dust pesky incubi and get paid the big bucks. A girl’s gotta do what she’s gotta do. Now there’s a Demon Child on a feeding rampage. I’d get all the kudos if I killed him but no one’s fronting up with the cash -- until the most infuriating vampire I’ve ever met wants to hire me. By the way, working for a vampire is strictly taboo. So, how do I kill this one? Can’t use my sex thrall when he looks like a kid, silver doesn’t hurt him and stakes don’t work either. This time, I have to rely on my wits, my skills and, worst of all, teamwork! We might all be doomed. If you like snarky vampires, snappy dialogue, and hot-blooded team dynamics, then you’ll love this fiendishly fun adventure.

Book excerpt: Screenwise offers a realistic and optimistic perspective on how to thoughtfully guide kids in the digital age. Many parents feel that their kids are addicted, detached, or distracted because of their digital devices. Media expert Devorah Heitner, however, believes that technology offers huge potential to our children-if parents help them. Using the foundation of their own values and experiences, parents and educators can learn about the digital world to help set kids up for a lifetime of success in a world fueled by technology. Screenwise is a guide to understanding more about what it is like for children to grow up with technology, and to recognizing the special challenges-and advantages-that contemporary kids and teens experience thanks to this level of connection. In it, Heitner presents practical parenting "hacks": quick ideas that you can implement today that will help you understand and relate to your digital native. The book will empower parents to recognize that the wisdom that they have gained throughout their lives is a relevant and urgently needed supplement to their kid's digital savvy, and help them develop skills for managing the new challenges of parenting. Based on real-life stories from other parents and Heitner's wealth of knowledge on the subject, Screenwise teaches parents what they need to know in order to raise responsible digital citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Creations is a collection of seventy-four stories told to Gary H. Gossen by Tzotzil Maya storytellers in San Juan Chamula, Mexico. Spanning four cycles of creations, destructions, and restorations from the dawn of cosmic order to the present era, this epic history reveals a distinctly Maya vision of the universe, grand in scope yet leavened with local humor, irony, and the Tzotzil narrators’ own critical commentaries. Four Creations includes mythic accounts of modern history, such as the Wars of Independence, the Mexican Revolution, and the current Protestant evangelical movement. Given in both transcribed Tzotzil and English translations, the texts are enlivened by more than one hundred Maya Indian drawings and by Gossen’s extensive ethnographic and historical notes based on his conversations with the narrators and more than thirty-five years of study. Miguel León-Portílla’s Foreword situates Four Creations within the broader context of Mesoamerican culture and traditions, while the Afterword by Jan Rus relates this work to recent events in modern-day Chamula.

Book excerpt: The plot revolves around three angry teenagers in a small, blue- collar town. Don Calhoun, the main character, is angry because he is a poor, pimply-faced teenage loner who yearns to be the most popular boy in school. Behind the pimply-faced exterior is a restless spirit seething with hate and revenge -- a deadly combination. Its the 60s and drugs and the free-love movement have taken hold in California. Through an acquaintance who has just returned from San Francisco, Don gets his hands on devil worship literature and a small wooden statue that was used in Satanic worship ceremonies. Don reads some of the literature, and concludes that selling his soul is the only way he can possibly realize his dream. But he really doesn't think it's possible. Across town lives another angry, miserable teen. His name is Eddie, and all he wants is to become the greatest rock-'n'-roll guitar player in the world. Eddie and Don are members of the zit squad at high school; at least that's what the jocks and cheerleaders call them. Laura once was a cheerleader and hung out with the other cheerleaders and jocks. But that was before she was paralyzed in a diving accident and ended up a "wheelchair-bound freak." Now her obsession is to walk again and regain her rightful place among the beautiful people. And like Don and Eddie, she becomes bitter and vengeful. Don is the first to take the plunge into the supernatural by conjuring up a demon that arranges for him to sell his soul to the big man himself. In just a matter of days, Don's new-found strength and powers enable him to destroy some of his tormentors. Only one person in town can sense the presence of evil and the death and destruction that will follow. But long ago she was labeled a religious nut, and nobody takes "poor ol' Anna" seriously. Don discovers that the ancient man who owns all the mills in town already is in league with the devil, having sold his soul a century earlier. Don is encouraged to recruit three more devil worshipers so the coven will be a complete thirteen members. Cruel events soon have Eddie and Laura eager to take the plunge after Don, and he easily convinces them that their souls are small prices to pay for the good life. To make their deal, Don, Eddie and Laura must sacrifice a human to Satan. Don chooses one of his teachers who delights in humiliating him in class, Eddie chooses a fellow student who ridiculed his music, and Laura chooses the girl who once was her best friend, but became her worst enemy after the accident. Each sacrifice is carried out in a bizarre, sadistic manner. The bodies soon begin to accumulate. Police launch an investigation but have few leads and very little incriminating evidence. Phillip Sawyer, a newspaper reporter fresh out of college, begins his own investigation hoping to find fame and fortune after breaking the case. And Anna keeps having visions of the murders and senses the growing evil. She tries to warn people and get someone to help her, but of course nobody believes her foolish story. In the end, Anna realizes she must battle Satan by herself, and sets out to prove she is the chosen one. Her tattered Bible guides her. In one test she handles a rattlesnake and drinks poison. She then raises a dog from the dead. But the ultimate test comes when she has to discard all her worldly possessions. The young reporter trails Don, Eddie and Laura to the old barn where they have set up an altar to worship Satan. Sawyer is caught spying on them and is asked what his last wish is before they cut his throat and feed him to the rats. To buy time, Sawyer tells them he wants to interview the devil. He is tied up and tossed into the cellar of the old barn. A few days later, Don arranges the interview at the mansion of the mill owner. During the interview, Sawyer makes a fatal error, he mentions Jesus Christ which infuriates Satan. Sawyer is retied and dumped back into the cellar. But this time

Book excerpt: A barbarian-turned-Roman-warrior leads an army against Persian invaders in this bestselling, epic historical adventure series opener. A.D. 255: The Roman Imperium is stretched to the breaking point, its authority and might challenged throughout the territories and along every border. One man is sent to marshal the defenses of a lonely city and to shore up the crumbling walls of a once indomitable symbol of Roman power, a man whose very name means war, a man called Ballista. So unfolds an epic drama—a story of empire, heroes, treachery, courage, and most of all, of brutal, bloody warfare. Praise for Fire in the East “In this blood and guts tale of ancient warfare, Oxford lecturer Sidebottom introduces readers to Marcus Clodius Bastilla, a third-century warrior who has risen through the ranks of the Roman army to achieve citizenship and the honorific of Dux Ripea. . . . How the brave and resourceful former barbarian defends himself from forces both within and without the city walls forms the spine of this action-packed and detail-rich narrative. This novel of sharp swords and blunt wit should find an appreciative audience among bloodthirsty battle boys of all ages.” —Publishers Weekly
