Is there still today a significant relationship between these individuals who all subscribe to Judaism? Book excerpt: The volume presents the changing situation of the Roma in the second half of the 20th century and examines the politics of the Hungarian state regarding minorities by analyzing legal regulations, policy documents, archival sources and sociological surveys. In the first phase analyzed (1945-61), the authors show the efforts of forced assimilation by the communist state. The second phase (1961-89) began with the party resolution denying nationality status to the Roma. Gypsy culture was equivalent with culture of poverty that must be eliminated. Forced assimilation through labor activities continued. The Roma adapted to new conditions and yet kept their distinct identity. From the 1970s, Roma intellectuals began an emancipatory movement, and its legacy is felt until this day. Although the third phase (1989-2010) brought about freedoms and rights for the Roma, with large sums spent on various Roma-related programs, the situation on the ground nevertheless did not improve. Segregation and marginalization continues, and it is rampant. The authors powerfully conclude: while Roma became part of the political community, they are still not part of the national one. For the inquiry into the long term development of an economy, the interaction between demographic change and economic activity cannot be neglected without omitting major aspects of the problems. The interaction between demographic change and economic development in the long run is one central issue. One conjecture is that it is mainly the relative population pressure which controls the pace of economic development. However, econometric evidence presented in the book does not support this hypothesis. In fact, the two countries failed to maintain diplomatic contact for most of the period. Yet an examination of Hungarian-Soviet relations from the end of the First World War to the beginning of the Second World War provides some important revelations. Hungary, which emerged from the First World War as a vulnerable losing power, and Soviet Russia, recovering from severe economic and social upheaval, proceeded down divergent paths during the interwar period. Hungary achieved some of its revisionist objectives between the years of 1938 and 1940, yet the country was not among those who determined the direction of Europe's political developments. The Soviet Union managed to regain its Great Power status, albeit in altered form, and, beginning with the intensification of political tensions within Europe during the 1930s, its authority increased steadily, placing the USSR beside Germany as one of the continent's supreme military powers. Moscow increasingly focused its attention toward central Europe during this time, treating some neighboring countries as belonging to its sphere of interest. Did Soviet leaders regard Hungary as part of this domain as well? Attila Kolontari attempts to answer this question while expanding our understanding of these events.
