Book excerpt: Quaker midwife Rose Carroll discovers dark secrets in 1888 Massachusetts For Quaker midwife Rose Carroll, life in Amesbury, Massachusetts, provides equal measures of joy and tribulation. She delights in attending to the needs of mothers and newborns even as she mourns the recent death of her sister. Likewise, Rose enjoys the giddy feelings that come from being courted by a handsome doctor, but a suspicious fire and two murders leave her fearing for the well-being of her loved ones. Driven by her desire for safety and justice, Rose Carroll begins asking questions related to the crimes. Consulting with her friends and neighbors—including the famous Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier—Rose draws on her strengths as a counselor and problem solver in trying to bring the perpetrators to light. Book excerpt: Biblical texts have been used consistently in sermons throughout Christian history. Preachers have transformed the texts into an aural experience, using them to evangelize, educate, edify, exhort, or even terrify, their audiences. Sermons have enabled Scripture to be communicated to people from a wide range of social backgrounds. 'Delivering the Word' examines the power of preaching and its reception across two millennia of homilies: from St Paul, Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine and Hildegard of Bingen to Jonathan Edwards, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Aimee Semple McPherson, and Chris Brain. In its exploration of the impact of the sermon on the interpretation of Scripture, 'Delivering the Word' will be of interest to students of biblical and religious studies.

Book excerpt: Truth is a powerful marketing tool—and really the only way to promote a message and brand effectively. Truth in advertising has long been something to ignore, or at least downplay. The role of advertising has been to position and manipulate brands to convince consumers that they're imbued with qualities they don't necessarily possess, or presume to tell them which ones matter. It worked when the brand's voice was the only voice, but with the rise of social media that era is over. Marketers have focused their messages on entertainment, creating funny or engaging campaigns that win awards but don't always sell products. Consumers determine what's true, and smart companies have realized that every communications medium can and will be used to contribute to those conclusions. In Tell the Truth, Jonathan Baskin and Sue Unerman look at the content and context of marketing communications. They provide the research of hundreds of companies and in-depth case studies on more than 50 global brands to show us that truthful brands deliver sales, profits, and sustainable relationships. Truth truly yields true competitive advantage.

He is against doing it the wrong way, with no plan, little preparation and only your passion to rely on. In this new book from successful entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author, Larry Winget, you'll learn the TRUTH about what you really need to know before you go into business, so you can stay in business. Forget passion, motivation, “loving what you do”, etc. Those things matter, but only a little. What really matters is finding a problem and solving it, serving your customer better than the competition, knowing how to sell and managing your time, resources and employees. According to Larry Winget, there are scores of "so-called" experts on entrepreneurship out there who have never run a successful business themselves, and yet they are peddling endless motivational cliche's about how YOU can be successful. Cliches like: "Just find a business you love, and the money will follow!"; "Become an entrepreneur because of the freedom it gives you!"'; "Become an entrepreneur so you can 'change the world!'"; "Believe it and you can achieve it!"; "Teamwork is the key to making your business a success!"; "For entrepreneurs to win in the social media world, they need to 'get clicks' and make bold, even shocking claims"; and so much more. Larry has another word for these cliches: LIES! And if you are thinking of starting your own business, and you have bought into any of these lies, Larry implores you to keep your day job, so you don't lose your shirt! You will not only be asked the tough questions in this book, you’ll get the answers. Questions like: Is your business necessary? What problem does it solve? What need does it fill? What pain does it alleviate? What tangible benefit will the customer receive? What should I charge? What gives you the right to be in business? Learn how to: Hire and fire Manage employees according to the core values of honesty, integrity and more Serve your customer the way they want to be served Sell…no skill is more important Create value in the mind of the customer “Circle the Wagons” and defend yourself and your business when it all goes to Hell This "tell it like it is" tour de force in business preparation and business survival is the toolkit you need before you quit your day job, and start your journey to true entrepreneurial success!

Book excerpt: The words of this book are based upon Christ’s declaration: “I am the way, the truth, and the life . . .” St. John 14:6. This Holy Ghost inspired book will have every reader reexamining their faith in Christ, their walk in God, and even the way they currently display God’s Agape love in this world.I am come unto you as a friend, and truly I write unto you in much fear and trembling in the Holy Ghost. I come not in mine own name, but in the name of him who has sent me to testify unto the truth; and in him is no lie, even he which is Jesus Christ, our Lord. Now there is utterly a fault in the church from the least to the greatest: those who preach haven’t been sent to preach, and those who teach have not the anointing; and those who prophesy unto you have prophesied a lie because they have altogether deceived the people; and because of your carrying away you shall be one with their damnation. While reading this book, you shall learn the truth of your God and Creator, and of his Son, Jesus Christ. You shall learn how to identify the voice of God in your hearing, and how he speaks to you. You will learn how and why the Lord, God is so attached to man, and why he loves man so much. You will learn why you must be born again; moreover, you will discover what it is you need to do (what's your part in the kingdom of God) to truly be a light to others in this world. You will discover the reason why both faith and love are the keys to life in the kingdom of God, and the role they play in salvation. You will learn how to properly utilize and deploy your faith in a powerful new way. And even though you might know the basics of faith, today you will learn why its works have been a great mystery to the church. Today we will unlock this mystery together, and you will find that you now, not only can please God, but that you will also learn how easy it is for you to do his will and overcome all things by faith. You will also learn who your heavenly Father really is, as you come to realize that he has been waiting a long to meet you.Above all else, you will learn the reasons why the miracles, spoken of in St. Mark 16:16-18., are not occurring in the church today, and why the ministers and preachers of our day have not been bringing forth the word with signs following as had the apostles. You will be taught many things that you may have never been taught in the church, or have been taught improperly; such as the Constancy, the Fidelity, and the Faithfulness of God in the reality of himself. You will learn not only what these words mean, but you will learn how to apply them to your life as you grow in Christ. Little children, I am only asking of you is to listen to his voice today. This book is a book of instructions given in hopes of making "YOU ALL" true Disciples of Christ. My one and only prayer for you all is that you don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn the truth about your heavenly Father, so that you do not go, The Impossible Way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains a distinctive pluralist account of truth, jointly-rooted perspectivism (‘JRP’ for short). This explanation unifies various representative while philosophically interesting truth-concern approaches in early Chinese philosophy on the basis of people’s pre-theoretic “way-things-are-capturing” understanding of truth. It explains how JRP provides effective interpretative resources to identify and explain one unifying line that runs through those distinct truth-concern approaches and how they can thus talk with and complement each other and contribute to the contemporary study of the issue of truth. In so doing, the book also engages with some distinct treatments in the modern study of Chinese philosophy. Through testing its explanatory power in effectively interpreting those representative truth-concern approaches in the Yi-Jing philosophy, Gongsun Long’s philosophy, Later Mohist philosophy, classical Confucianism and classical Daoism, JRP is also further justified and strengthened. Mou defends JRP as an original unifying pluralist account in the context of cross-tradition philosophical engagement, which can also effectively engage with other accounts of truth (including other types of pluralist accounts) in contemporary philosophy. The purpose of this book is dual: (1) it is to enhance our understanding and treatment of the truth concern as one strategic foundation of various movements of thought in classical Chinese philosophy that are intended to capture “how things are”; (2) on the other hand, it is to explore how the relevant resources in Chinese philosophy can contribute to the contemporary exploration of the philosophical issue of truth in philosophically interesting and engaging way.

Neil Tennant argues compellingly that every truth is knowable, and that manifestationism in the theory of meaning entails logical reform. He extends semantic anti-realism to empirical discourse, developing new accounts of the analytic/synthetic distinction, cognitive significance and constructive falsifiability. The book has important consequences for the philosophy of mathematics and logic, the theory of meaning, metaphysics, and epistemology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his reporting on Islamic true believers to his descriptions of the postcolonial world, V. S. Naipaul has been a controversial figure in contemporary letters. Winner of the Nobel Prize, Naipaul has traveled throughout the world, looking at its varied cultures and seeking out others' stories, recording and transforming them. His engagement with postcolonial cultures informs his novels, such as Guerrillas and A Bend in the River. However, it is his documentaries (such as Among the Believers and Beyond Belief) and his works that combine actual and fictional histories and memories (Finding the Center, The Enigma of Arrival, and A Way in the World) that best exhibit a growing awareness of the complexities of cultural difference--and the incompleteness and uncertainty of understanding "strangers." In this book, Dagmar Barnouw explores the sophisticated strategies and experimentations that Naipaul employs in his cultural critique and in his enterprise of learning about and documenting the enduring strangeness of this world.
