Book excerpt: Mansur's book, Delectable Lie: a liberal repudiation of multiculturalism, is a recipient of The Eric Hoffer Awards' 2014 Montaigne Medal for most thought-provoking title by a small publisher. Now in its second edition the book includes an added Preface geared toward the American audience. As both Canada and the United States continue to deal with multiculturalism issues, Delectable Lie is more relevant and timely than ever. From the book: "My point is that although multiculturalism once seemed a very good idea, at least to politicians and others smitten with the ambition for unity, it is increasingly shown to be a lie-a delectable lie, perhaps, yet a lie nevertheless-that is destructive of the West's liberal democratic heritage, tradition, and values based on individual rights and freedoms. This could have been foretold, as indeed those philosophers and historians of ideas who viewed freedom as immeasurably more important than equality in the development of the West did foretell. They admonished people against the temptation to abridge freedom in pursuit of equality."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first Quarterly Essay of 2003, Tim Flannery launches an attack on the various lies that we tell ourselves about our resources, our past and our future. The lie of terra nullius that made us ignore the Aborigines' knowledge of the environment. The lie of the Snowy Mountains Scheme that did untold damage to our river system for the sake of white immigration. The lie that rushing to preserve wilderness will save endangered species. Tim Flannery is also skeptical about the myths of multiculturalism, and he argues that we cannot sustain a larger population given our resources. In his conclusion, he asks how we can discharge our responsibility to the refugees who are the victims of American policies we collude with. 'This essay is written as a thundering no to the characteristic Australian assumption that 'She'll be right' ... This is a Quarterly Essay written in the passionate belief that we need a coherent policy on population ... If we do not have one, we will never be in a position to do justice to ... the dispossessed people of the earth; indeed our children's children will ... think we have dishonoured their birthright.' —Peter Craven, Introduction 'The refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol will almost certainly, in time, be remembered as the greatest failure of the Howard government - Tampa, detention camps and Iraq notwithstanding.' —Tim Flannery, Beautiful Lies

Book excerpt: In our time the ideology of multiculturalism the set of ideas that all cultures are equal and deserving of equal treatment in a liberal democracy such as Canada is linked to the pressing demand for equality in Western societies as these become increasingly multi-ethnic due to immigration and open borders. When first proposed, the idea of an official multiculturalism program to be sponsored by the state, supported by tax-payers, and monitored and enforced by thought-police (human rights commissions) was at best dubious, and at worst is by its very nature poised against Western liberalism. Moreover, as mentioned, it was based on the false idea another official lie, really that all cultures are equal. However, that is an orthodoxy of the last century increasingly dismissed by serious thinkers. That is because there are established criteria making it possible to judge the achievements of all cultures, whether in the arts and literature, religion, philosophy, technology, modes of governance, or science; but the primary criterion that makes possible all human achievement is freedom. My point is that although multiculturalism once seemed a very good idea, at least to politicians and others smitten with the ambition for unity, it is increasingly shown to be a lie a delectable lie, perhaps, yet a lie nevertheless that is destructive of the West s liberal democratic heritage, tradition, and values based on individual rights and freedoms. This could have been foretold, as indeed those philosophers and historians of ideas who viewed freedom as immeasurably more important than equality in the development of the West did foretell. They admonished people against the temptation to abridge freedom in pursuit of equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book elaborate an overall view of the central predicament confronting the West today: a theologically-inspired terrorist movement, the left-liberal belief-system that dominates the Western sensibility, the plague of political correctness that devitalizes language and obscures truth, and the almost universal opprobrium in which America—and by extrapolation the historical endowment of Western civilization—is held by the official institutions of the international community and by liberal culture. For too many years now we have practiced the rites of evasion, craving asylum in blindness, conciliation, sophistry and equivocation. Many flinch from expressing their convictions plainly, fearing to offend their readers and imperil their professional credentials. There is no more pressing requirement for us today than the obligation to seek the truth and to speak clearly, boldly, and without compromise, an endeavor with which this book is fundamentally engaged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entire foreign policy and much of the domestic policy of the United States and other Western governments is based on the proposition that the vast majority of Muslims are moderate and peaceful, including those who are emigrating in large numbers to Europe and North America. But as Islamist groups and many mosques radicalize peaceful Muslims and appeal to the teachings of the Koran, Hadith, and Sunnah, it is imperative for moderates and reformists to articulate a vision of Islam and an exegesis of Islamic texts that can withstand the challenge of Islamists and the ulema who have declared the sanctity and immutability of the text. Instead, they must reestablish a firm foundation of Islam that is modernized, genuinely peaceful, tolerant, pluralistic, and compatible with secular governance, the freedom of speech, human rights, and equality. The Challenge of Modernizing Islam is the first major effort to provide that foundation. Veteran journalist Christine Douglass-Williams interviews foremost moderate and reformist Muslims in the Western world. She asks them tough questions about how they deal with problematic Koran passages, how they intend to get their message across to the Muslim world, and more. Their answers are revelatory, even in the ways in which they disagree with one another. Douglass-Williams has captured the Islamic Reformist movement in its full intellectual ferment, laying bare the tensions and triumphs of the Reformers. In the book's second half, she adds a crucial series of searingly honest and illuminating reflections on the challenges the reformers face, the chances they have of succeeding, and the implications of their struggle for the future of the Western world and of all free people. Illuminating, engaging, and thought-provoking, The Challenge of Modernizing Islam is an essential text for understanding the future of the United States and the West, and the implications of Muslim moderates' struggle for the free world.

Book excerpt: Iréne gives the wealthy businessmen what they want, diving headfirst into the filthy river, thinking only of providing for her baby daughter, Marisa, as the men salivate over her soaked body emerging onto the bank. A young boy tries to befriend the reticent younger sister of the town’s cruelest bully, only to discover the family betrayal behind her quiet countenance. Josefa, a young bride, is executed for murdering the man who raped her. Joy Castro’s How Winter Began traces these and other characters as they seek compassion from each other and themselves. Thematically linked by the lives of women, especially Latinas, and their experiences of poverty and violence in a white-dominated, wealth-obsessed culture, How Winter Began is a delicately wrought collection of stories. The question at the heart of this riveting book is how or whether to trust one another after the rupture of betrayal.

Book excerpt: Did it ever occur to you what might happen if you found yourself compelled to tell the truth for the rest of your life, because all power of telling a lie was gone? It would seem that since a great bulk of our society is built upon sham and pretense, things would come to a pretty pass if the power of untruths were destroyed.

Book excerpt: ANDREW Seven years ago, I took off my tux, slapped on a pair of secondhand jeans and walked away from my billion dollar inheritance. I guess I didn’t walk far enough… Because yesterday my inheritance came back to me, and in order to claim it, I need to find a fake fiancée to satisfy my family’s billion dollar demands. That’s where my tyrannical, uptight boss Nancy comes in—a royal pain in the seat of the secondhand jeans I’ve worn since the day I became her bartender. Truth is: I’ve been lying for seven years. I figure I can lie for one more weekend. But what I can’t lie about is how I’ve started to see the usually buttoned-up Nancy in a whole new light. How I’ve started to notice how sexy she is out of those overly prim pencil skirts. And how much I want to rub my fingers over her strawberry-red mouth. But I can’t. Because she’s my boss. Because it’s only a weekend. And because our pretend relationship—one of many amongst my family’s most dangerous secrets—is only a lie… Isn’t it?
