This book was released on 1972 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue cracks were grown in compact tension specimens of polymethylmethacrylate, a transparent polymer which was used as a model for metals. Various peak overloads applied to the constant DeltaK baselines used produced changes in the baseline load crack growth rates. A study of the monochromatic light interference fringe patterns emanating from the fatigue cracks at zero load indicated that the crack surface were closed along the saw cut edge and on the free surface of the specimens. The crack surfaces were displaced in the interior of the specimen at zero load. Measurement of the crack opening displacements from the fringe patterns indicated that the crack surfaces opened on the free surface at approximately half the baseline load level for a stress ratio of approximately zero. This is in agreement with the Elber crack closure concept.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures by : A. Carpinteri
Download or read book Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures written by A. Carpinteri and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Research in Engineering Science by : Romesh C. Batra
Download or read book Contemporary Research in Engineering Science written by Romesh C. Batra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failures occur in aerospace, marine, nuclear structures and automobile com ponents from initiation and propagation of cracks from holes, scratches or defects in the material. To design against these failures, crack propagation life and fracture strength need to be accurately predicted. It is reported in the literature, that these failures often initiate as surface cracks, corner cracks and cracks emanating from fastner holes. Such cracks are with elliptic or nearly elliptic in shapes. The deviation from elliptic shape is due to varying constraint effect along the crack front. Even in situations, when the cracks are through the thickness of the material, there would be thicknesswise variation of constraint effects leading to three dimensional nature of crack growth. Accurate predictions of the crack growth in these cases by numerical methods can be made only by solving three-dimensional boundary value problems. Empirical relationships have been developed [1] based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics over years describing fatigue crack growth response. Some of these empirical relationships required modifications in the later stages, to meet the design applications. The Crack closure phenomenon discovered by Elber[2, 3] during the crack growth phase is mainly attributed to the local material yielding near the crack tip and the consequent residual plastic wake behind the crack tip. It helped considerably in understanding several aspects of fatigue crack growth and rewrite these relations.

Book Synopsis Fracture and Fatigue Control in Structures by : Stanley Theodore Rolfe
Download or read book Fracture and Fatigue Control in Structures written by Stanley Theodore Rolfe and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1977 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizes applications of fracture mechanics to prevent fracture and fatigue failures in structures, rather than the theoretical aspects of fracture mechanics. The concepts of driving force and resistance force are used to differentiate between the mathematical side and the materials side. Case studies of actual failures are new to the third edition. Book Synopsis Investigation of Fatigue-crack Growth Under Simple Variable-amplitude Loading by : C. M. Hudson
Download or read book Investigation of Fatigue-crack Growth Under Simple Variable-amplitude Loading written by C. M. Hudson and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VARIABLE-AMPLITUDE FATIGUE-CRACK-GROWTH TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON SIMPLE SHEET SPECIMENS MADE OF 7075-T6 ALUMINUM ALLOY. THE NUMBERS AND THE AMPLITUDES OF THE HIGH-LOAD CYCLES APPLIED IN THESE TESTS WERE SYSTEMATICALLY VARIED TO STUDY THEIR EFFECTS ON SUBSEQUENT LOW-LOAD FATIGUE-CRACK GROWTH. THE HIGH-LOAD CYCLES CONSISTENTLY DELAYED SUBSEQUENT FATIGUE-CRACK GROWTH AT LOWER LOAD LEVELS. FOR A GIVEN LOW-LOAD LEVEL, THE HIGHER THE PRECEDING HIGH-LOAD LEVEL WAS, THE GREATER THE DELAY IN CRACK PROPAGATION. FURTHERMORE, THE DELAY IN CRACK GROWTH INCREASED WITH INCREASING NUMBERS OF HIGH-LOAD CYCLES UP TO A LIMIT. ONE HIGH-LOAD CYCLE CAUSED APPROXIMATELY ONE-FOURTH OF THE MAXIMUM DELAY, AND TEN HIGH-LOAD CYCLES CAUSED APPROXIMATELY ONE-HALF OF THE MAXIMUM DELAY. THESE DELAYS PROBABLY RESULTED FROM RESIDUAL COMPRESSIVE STRESSES GENERATED IN THE MATERIAL IMMEDIATELY AHEAD OF THE CRACK TIP DURING THE APPLICATION OF THE HIGH-LOAD CYCLES. ELECTRON FRACTOGRAPHIC STUDIES SHOWED THAT A GIVEN STRESS LEVEL, FATIGUE CRACKS PROPAGATED MORE SLOWLY IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE APPLICATION OF A HIGH-LOAD CYCLE THAN THEY DID IMMEDIATELY BEFORE ITS APPLICATION. THIS LOWER CRACK-GROWTH RATE IS CONSISTENT WITH THE DELAY IN CRACK GROWTH OBSERVED ON THE MACROSCOPIC LEVEL.
